Title: Caveman to Cosmos Self Imposed Rules
Post by: Hydromancerx on March 10, 2020, 03:09:33 PM
This thread will be a guidebook to self imposed rules on how I play in the style of "Caveman to Cosmos". C2C is a mod for Civ4 (https://forums.civfanatics.com/forums/civ4-caveman-2-cosmos.449/) that I use to work on. This along with my own experimental play for Sims 2 where I highly modded it into sorta of a Sim Caveman style game. I have in turn made these sets of rules for playing Rimworld in a gradual progression through time. Each time I play I learn from it and adjust the rules. Or add rules deepening on new mods out there.

Wow this is quite extensive.

So do you usually only progress slowly in a game? When I play medieval I just don't research Electricity+ (self enforced) but I guess I still use some furniture and other items that aren't fully era authentic especially when I am still tribal this sounds intersting.

What would really help is some mod that lets you customize all Technologies from all mods you have and selectively disable them plus also put all techs into Time Categories (Bronze Age, Med, Renaissance etc). I use ResearchPal and it has color coded kind of eras but its not customizable afaik no idea if that would be possible at all or interfere with how mods work in general.

@CyberianK
The first eras are quick, but once I reach say Prehistoric then it slows way down. I also "drag my feet" to try to explore and test the eras. Like my last run with 1.0 lasted over an year and I only got to the Dark Age before 1.1 came out. In short this type of play is a marathon, not a sprint.

In the 1.0 play through i posted my Mod List here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/twcx8680nph34xd/modlist%20zoli%201.0.txt?dl=0). I have been slowly rebuilding it for 1.1. One trick i use is the Faction Control mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1509102551) paired with the Faction Discovery Mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=751841890). Basically you turn off the factions you don't want and then turn them on when you are ready. I generally turn them on an era ahead of me. Such the Ancient Rim factions when I am in the Copper Age and the Medieval factions when I am in the Bronze or Iron Age. You have to be very careful about pirates. If they sneak in there I will god mode delete the raids if they appear.

As for techs, I usually just research the tech tree as normal, but  just because i researched it doesn't mean I can use it yet. In fact while in the Iron age I had basically Renaissance level research going but couldn't use any of it yet because it was inappropriate for my current Era. And that's basically the kinda of on the fly stuff you got to do. Ask yourself or look up if something existed yet. If so then you can use it, if not then you have to wait.

Thanks yes in my game I also use Faction Control and disabled Mecha + Gun wielding factions + Empire faction and increased Medieval factions.

That said I still get some Noble missions, I probably should have disabled DLC before. No idea if I can Disable DLC on existing savegame.

Here are my disabled events. However I have the Scenario Amender mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2012264335) now so I could potentially add back in events as i advanced. While before this mod I was stuck with what I originally limited.

Here are my moon base plans for the Penumbra Tribe. Unfortunately, the mod that allows you to remove ruins crashes my game, so I am unable to utilize it. I have quite a bit of junk to deconstruct! After trying the challenge a few times, working out mods and scrapping an idea I had for a rather-harsh ice age, I'm finally ready to get through this challenge. Cosmos or bust! I'll share my progress and story at the end of each Epoch.

As you can see Luna Tribus has cleared some of the ruins. The first epoch was relatively uneventful. We've got some rough moods due to dehydration, heat stroke, and an unfortunate lack of foraging (mea culpa).

I also discovered that my dev mode was broken during the last game patch. It's throwing errors associated with the Crash Landing mod, but I don't currently have that installed. Hopefully I can fix it before I need to do some animal taming!

This picture sums up Homo Habilis for my tribe. Destruction of all the buildings and junk on the map, and my pawns desperately trying to entertain themselves building sandcastles. A dry thunderstorm on 11 Jugust provided several fires for us to extinguish, teaching these we cave men the magic of the flame!

My tribe has finished all my goals for Erectus, and we're moving on to Homo Sapiens. I look forward to more opportunities to make my tribalists a little happier. Major events included illness and two rounds of refugees. I realized about half-way through this stage that my storyteller was set to peaceful for some reason, and corrected that. I've still not had a raid, however.

My tribe has moved into the Stone Age as of late last night. The honest truth is that the mood malus from lack of food options was really wearing on me, and after several quadrums of waiting for wolves, I decided to simply spawn some huskies to tame and move on.

I'm really looking forward to taking my time through the stone age, and
enjoying each section, bit by bit. I'll be expanding the base and adding some more decorative items to make it feel quite a bit more homey. I do have an issue in that with my particular mod setup cooking research requires the regular research bench. My plan is to build it, research cooking, and then immediately dismantle it.

I'm adding a blueprint to this post for my small, Sapiens-friendly personal hut. It includes a bedroll and two leather door flaps that you'll need to customize with your tribe's current supplies, and I've left out the flooring so you can put in whatever you like. I ended up using different floors for each hut, which looks "interesting", though not particularly aesthetic. :)

Major events for this epoch included a Feast - an event from the new VE Vikings mod. My tribalists had a grand time partying for almost two days, and passed out outside in -1 degree weather, all high on ambrosia. We also had a child born, and recruited two raiders. My tribe presently consists of a Shaman/Tribal leader (researcher), Two builders, a Farmer and farmer/rancher combo, one cook, one crafter, one artisan, and one miner. 5/9 are ranged, with 4 being melee.
