Title: [1.3.3200] Coca harvest upsets tree precept
Post by: glass zebra on January 19, 2022, 08:49:10 PM
If you harvest the cocoa trees, people with the "Trees: desired" precept get upset as if they were chopped. While the trees do vanish when harvested, I always thought it was to put them in line with other plants instead of making them special and just accepted it as game-y. I never thought of actual tree chopping. In ideology this has actual consequences now though. It seems like they are both chopable and harvestable, yet both actions give chocolate and both actions upset people with the precept:

Coca trees seem to be implemented as trees mostly, being harvestable below 65%, taking a lot of space between the plants and making a tree fall noise when harvested. You do not get any wood from them though. I am not sure if you can really call this a bug, but since the implementation is "kinda weird" (chopping a tree to get its cocoa?) yet was without consequences in the past, I thought this might still be worth reporting because of Ideology.

On top of that regarding cocoa: Cocoa seems to be the only harvestable that still gets a lower sell value when it loses hp. All (I think all?) other plant harvest ignored hp reduction for quite a while now, but the patch that changed that did not chance it for chocolate. Is this meant to be? Chocolate recreation is also a bit buggy, since people can choose to do it when they are full on food, taking the chocolate, sitting down, starting to eat it but then putting it down because they are actually full. Allowing chocolate for recreation also throws out the "impressive rec room" buff for the "impressive dining room" buff, which is usually gotten by normal meal eating for the whole day anyway. If you compare this to beer: People go get the beer, do social relaxation and drink the beer at the end, getting the impressive rec room buff.

Chocolate and the tree seems to be be out of line a bit. Not sure how much bug report and how much oddness report this is, but you seemed to be open to this in earlier reports.

Both DLCs, no mods used.

I gotta be honest, I'm not sure I'm following on this one.  I can look into the damage to chocolate and market value but...

Chocolate does come from trees.  You need to research trees to unlock it.  In the game mechanics you are removing the cacao tree from the map, which is destroying a tree.  To me it just seems like tree connection pawns shouldn't do chocolate.

I always thought it was just the implementation. Destroying the trees to get the chocolate does not make a lot of sense on a realism base, but it was acceptable to make the plant like other harvestables and there was no reason apart from it "being weird" to change this. Now there could be, but if you disagree it's fine.

In any case it's still weird that the cocoa trees have a "harvest" AND a "chop wood" button which both give you chocolate since they can't yield wood. They should probably just have the harvest one.

I'll put this in my doc for a dev to review the process.
