Title: HELP: How to Install and Update All Types of Mods, 1.0 Update and beyond
Post by: Iwillbenicetou on September 19, 2014, 08:11:57 PM
Instructions on how to download modifications for Rimworld
WINDOWS HELP:
1) Download it. The download page could be Dropbox, google drive, GitHub, or through the forums. You need an account if a mod creator decides to put the download attached to the post. On GitHub, the mod creator normally provides a zip file on their repository, but if there is none, you can click on the green "code" button in the top right above the files and then click "Download zip."

2) The file you get will most likely be zipped or compressed, use your decompression tool of choice (winzip, winrar, 7zip with help to use it on bottom) to extract the files.

3) Move the folder into the mods folder, located in your Rimworld install location, make sure that the mods files are 1 level deep. For example, /mods/modname/defs. not /mods/modname/modname/defs which can sometimes happen. Make sure the file structure is /mods/defs/, which can then be moved the mods folder. On steam, navigate to Program Files (x86 if your PC is 64bit) /Steam/SteamApps/common/Rimworld/Mods. Then you can drag in the mod folder here.

4) Start Rimworld and select "mods" from the menu, here you can activate and deactivate mods. Never deactivate the core mod, as it will break your game. Some mods require restarting the game instead of opening the mods folder and exiting it without restarting the game. Restarting the game happens most of the time anyway, but if you want to be extra cautious, quitting and starting the game up again doesn't hurt.

5) If you add a mod which adds factions, you have to create a whole new game for the new factions to appear on the map. Remember your coordinates and seed!

6) If you cannot start your game after enabling a mod, navigate to %appdata% folder. This will either be in your user folder: /c:/users/username/, and make sure you have "hidden folders and folders" on and go to the "AppData" folder, or by searching %appdata% in windows search, then into "LocalLow." In here you should see a "Ludeon Studios" folder, navigate to Rimworld/config and remove the offending or broken mod from the "modsConfig.xml" file. This is how to recover a broken installation.

MAC HELP:

1) Download it. The download page could be Dropbox, google drive, GitHub, or through the forums. You need an account if a mod creator decides to put the download attached to the post. On GitHub, the mod creator normally provides a zip file on their repository, but if there is none, you can click on the green "code" button in the top right above the files and then click "Download zip."

2) The file you get will most likely be zipped or compressed, which means you have to uncompress the file. Most Macs already have the capability of doing this, but installing the unarchiver (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-unarchiver/id425424353?mt=12) from the app store lets you download .rar files if you are unable to do so already.

3) Find the mod folder. Wherever you store the Rimworld app, either in the downloads or applications folder, right click or double finger click on the Rimworld application. Then choose the option to "open package contents." You should find the mod folder in there.

4) Move the folder. Either copy and paste (Cmd + C) or click and drag into the folder.

5) Activate the mod. Open Rimworld and select the mods tab. Never deactivate the core mod, as it will break your game. Activate your mods, and start a new game.

OTHER TIPS:
Rimpy, an external application to help with managing and ordering mods: Steam (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1847679158) GitHub (https://github.com/rimpy-custom/RimPy/releases/tag/1.2.6.29)
When installing, always keep a window showing your downloads, and another showing the mods folder. Helps installing a lot easier.
Steam Workshop makes everything downloadable with clicking the subscribe button. It also allows for mods to be updated without reinstalling it.

UPDATING MODS:
If the mod author has not stated how to update mods, follow these instructions below!

Simply just replace the old folder with the new one, (keeping the name of the old file). Some mods require you to start a new game, as it may crash and or corrupt the game/world files if you try to load it up. This means you may have to create new worlds or colonies to update the mod!
Modsync (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=41634.0) is a good tool to keep mods updated and it keeps your mods organized

If you are having trouble, restart your game and restart your computer. Or make new worlds...
If you have any more problems, PM me and if you still have trouble try Support (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?board=9.0).

7z OR 7zip HELP
I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to use this
When you first install 7zip, it will probably be in either "Program Files," or "Program Files (x86)."

The (x86) is if you have a 64bit computer. Or if you install off of Google Chrome or any other browser except Internet Explorer, it will be in your downloads folder.
Then when you open the file, you will get a bunch of weird files and programs. You will most likely have a program called "7zFM.exe" When you open this program up, you will get:
"Computer, Documents, Network, and \\. (maybe not the last one).

Then double click on Computer, and then double click on C:\, and then double click on Users, then on your user (for example, mine is Iwillbenicetou), then you can go into the downloads folder from there.
Then you get downloads and you can expand any file you want. And if you close 7z, it will save your location.

HOW TO REPORT BUGS AND/OR ISSUES

First, you should look to see what the mod author suggests. Some mod authors use Mantis (a program), or Github's issue tracking program to find and report bugs. If the mod author specifically does not say this, post your issue in the thread/post.

Always include these following ideas/rules

1) A DETAILED description of your issue. What was happening before, how did it crash/freeze up, what did the error say. What were pawns doing (Colonists, animals, enemies) doing before. What mods were you using? What was the mod order? Things like these

2) Include the file output_log.txt file. You can get here by going to where the Rimworld.exe/.app file is located. For PC users, open the RimWorld1135Win_Data file. For macs, you should find it in this string of files: /Users/[your user name]/Library/Logs/Unity/Player.log. For Linux: /home/[your username]/.config/unity3d/Ludeon Studios/RimWorld/Player.log. Inside should be the Output_log.txt file. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE THE CONTENTS. Instead, attach it to your post by copying it onto the desktop and attaching it (for easy attachment). If the file is too big, use the code BB tag, like this:

and copy and paste it in here.(use the forum's [ code ]the log text[ /code ] and delete the spaces between the square brackets)

3) Misc. details. For example, if you edited the mod files, put it in here. Or if you got it from a modpack, explain it.

This probably should of been posted in the mods help sub-folder
I think this should be stickied here, to be honest.  This is the first place people will look when installing mods, since it links to the clients, and it seems somewhat relevant.  Instructions right on the tin are always nice.

These instructions are on how to download mods.
1. Download it! If you are having trouble, it may be your internet, your computer, or just spamming the download button because it wasn't loading... Maybe not the last one...
2. The file you get will most likely be zipped (compressed), use your decompression tool of choice (winzip, winrar, 7zip) to extract the files.
3. Move the folder into the mods folder, located in your Rimworld install location, make sure that the mods files are 1 level deep (for example /mods/modname/defs. not /mods/modname/modname/defs as sometimes happens.
4. Start Rimworld and select "mods" from the menu, here you can activate and deactivate mods. Some mods are buggy when you open mods folder and exit it without quiting the game. These include Clutter, Animal Rugs (?) and some others. If you're unsure, then quit the game and start it up again.
5. If you add a mod which adds factions, create a whole new world. Not colony, world. So remember your seeds!
6. If you cannot start your game after enabling a mod, navigate to your user folder (c:/users/username) make sure you have "hidden folders and folders" on and go to "AppData" then "LocalLow". In here you should see a ludeon Studios folder, navigate to Rimworld/config and remove the offending mod from the "modsConfig.xml" file.

If you have any more problems, PM me and if you still have trouble try support.

Tweaked your text and added 1 more point.

This section seems like a good place for this thread given the reasoning behind it. Stickied as a result. :)
This should be helpful for others in the future.

May want to include the contents of this thread as well: http://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=3549.0

It would also be good to note that mods that are attached to forum posts will only show up if you have an account and are logged into the forum. I have seen a few people make that mistake.

Nice, thank you.

But can you also help how to remove a specific mod from a mod bundle?
For the sake of example (no harms intended),
How to remove Jaxxa Shield which exist in both Tech Tree Minami and Superior Crafting?
Or maybe the Project Armory (since the stand alone PA has an exe that lets us choose which weapon to add).
When half of my screen is filled with building options I'd never end up using, I prefer the freedom to choose what I add in the game.

I'm not sure but its worded like he's opening the mod folder from inside the game...I've never needed to do this...I could be wrong, but I see no reason for that to be buggy. Some explanation needed.

Edit - oh maybe he means textures. Some mods need you to restart or you get the pink squares.

Pink textures are done becouse of graphicPath class, it cant be avioded in xml, i had to fix it in dll.
As for folders, if you initialize mod in game, you can delete the mod folder while game is active and the mod will still function properly in game.

If there's the same mod in two modpacks, all you have to do is tell your OS to not copy it when you unzip the pack.  Generally speaking, these guys don't change the names of mod folders inside their packs, so you don't have to do much.  If they did change the name of the mod folder, then you can just disable one within the mods menu of the game, or delete the folder inside of your mods folder

Yeah, I was talking about that "bug" If you start it up, then they don't show the correct placeholder. People then will say that the mod doesn't work and PM me that Clutter or something doesn't work.

I don't know about that, that assumes that the modder has just done a single zip file with the separate folders inside. It looks like they are now merging them all into the same folder so it shows up as a single mod in the manger.

You had to pick that example  :'(

Is your problem that there is some incompatibility between the two or you just not want them?
This will change depending on the specific mod but for most of them (including mine) if you just want to hide the buildings, commenting out the building def in the xml file would probably be easiest. I don't think this should cause any errors.

LOL, don't get me wrong jaxxa, I think your shield is great, and it works well. It even protects enemies that got to close... tactical... Also, I can has square shield instead of circular shield? :3
As I said, your mod there is just for example. Since yours is integrated in both TTM and Superior Crafting. Instead of individual folders, it's combined with Clutter, Project Armory, and whatnots. I'm trying to figure out how to remove a specific item without causing any errors.
Removing the xml in Defs sometimes causes an error, maybe because it's linked to another item that uses it.
Maybe the modding structure/arrangement should be revised so that we can have a 1 app solution to enable and disable items in the mods?

No problem, I was just joking, glad you like the mod. Although I realize it wont be for everyone.

I suppose that is the problem with mod packs. While they take all the mods and get them to work nicely with each other, but in doing this they usually combine all the mods and make it harder to disable parts that you don't want.

Really you are trying to do what the creator did in reverse. So you are going to have to edit parts and just keep running it and fixing the errors.

I would try removing building defs, I would not think that usually there should be too many other things that depend on a building def. Assuming that it is a building you want to remove from the pack.

Like being able to pick which item is going to be added in-game.

It does.  But now it's kind of up to how nice mod makers want to be.  I have mine set up in kind of 'chunks', which can be removed by whoever wants to.  Although, mine's still kinda small, so it wouldn't be a good idea to remove those chunks :P

You should be ably to just download them through your web browser as you would any other file, I use Chrome or Firefox.

I use 7zip on windows to extract the files, although you should just be able to use whatever you extracted the base game with.

7-zip  (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/), or  Winrar  (http://www.rarlab.com/) work fine for this.

Mods will almost never work from one version to the next. You will have to wait for the mod creators to update them and then get the new versions.

Oh, sorry to confuse, but I meant how to download mods is pretty much the same. You have to wait until there is confirmed update for the mod to work.

Also it could be good to have an explanation on how the load order works.
And where the log files are so you don't have people taking screenshots of the console to report an error.

Usually the authors will explicitly say, but if not, it doesn't matter. And always load the Core mod first!

I'm using a quote (I just read this right now :P)

QuoteMods might become incompatible. I've tried to keep the API the same as it was before, but a few places have necessarily changed. Also, since the DLL was recompiled, the ABI might not be identical. This means the functions and variable names are the same, but the compiler might have changed the way the bits and bytes are passed around, causing code compiled against the old DLL to not work properly when it tries to talk to the new DLL. This means:

Simple mods (especially those which are purely XML data, images, and sounds without any code) should still work without any changes.

Mods with code might work without changes, but there's a good chance they'll need to be recompiled against the new DLL.

A few mods will actually need to have code changed if they touch parts of the API that I changed.

The most important part is the part and the bottom bits

Some mods will work, some won't. Mostly the small ones will work, but with a few errors. The big ones that have dll, like mech defense 2, and some others, won't

Putting this here in case anyone else needs this information.

On a Mac for b12:

  • Double-click on the downloaded mod archive (.zip file) to unpack it
  • Copy the directory it unpacks it into by hitting Cmd-C or right-click and choose Copy
  • Find the game, right-click Rimworld914Mac.app and choose Show Package Contents (protip: You can search for Rimworld in spotlight and hit Cmd-Enter to open the folder that contains it)
  • Open the Mods folder and paste the mod with Cmd-V or right-click and choose Paste item

The next time you open the Mods tab inside the game, it'll be displayed. Even if you installed with the game running.

The information is now contained in the general FAQ thread (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=18272.0). I unpinned this one because while your writeup is very helpful by itself, I feel it is better to keep these things in one centralized thread instead of having dozens of small threads explaining how to install mods, how to report bugs, etc.

This was the centralized thread, approved by Tynan himself to be pinned. Can you at least link this more popular thread in your new thread? I still don't get why you need to unpin this.

Like I said, there is now a centralized FAQ thread which contains instructions on how to install mods, update them, report issues and which will be expanded in the future as needed. It is not meant as a personal attack against you or this guide, it is simply easier both for me and any mod users to have one centralized thread containing all the relevant information rather than having it split up over multiple threads.

You will need to extract it.

Are you using an old version of Prepare Carefully? I suspect so, as it has not come out for Alpha 13 yet. Make sure it's up to date, and then comment back here.

What do you mean by replacing the old folder with the new one? Is this about changing mod version or actually updating it (i.e. making an A13 mod work with A14). Speaking of which are there any A13 mods that work with A14?

What I mean with replacing the old folder with the new one, is downloading the current file of the mod (Alpha 14), and replacing the old file (Alpha 13). And Alpha 13 mods doesn't work with Alpha 14

Hi there !

I have a bit of a problem : none of the mods I install works. When I try to activate them, they appear in red and I can see a message stating that the version is unknown and the mod probably won't work.

Indeed they don't work. But the version is good. I tried re-downloading them, re-downloading the entire game, nothing changes.

Otherwise the game works perfectly fine but not being able to mod it bothers me...

2) Include the file output_log.txt file. You can get here by going to where the Rimworld.exe/.app file is located. For PC users, open the RimWorld1135Win_Data file. For macs, right-click on Rimworld.app and click, Open Package Contents. You should find the RimWorld1135Mac_Data file, or something similar. Inside should be the Output_log.txt file.

From what I can tell, the Mac app does not write the output_log.txt file by default. I couldn't find any in the app bundle nor in the corresponding Library/Application Support folder. It seems that you have to start the app from the command line with extra arguments to write it. That requires a lot more than just simply changing a few lines. You have to learn xml and C# to actually update the mod. There is a wiki for editing Rimworld code. (The website actually appears to be taken down, or as the site says,
QuoteThe wiki is disabled for now. It's because the wiki site is really resource-intensive and stressful on the server, and has been causing it to crash. Currently upgrading hosting; this will come back when the site seems stable.

For now, though, there are lots of great tutorials about the game on YouTube!

Sorry about this.

Ty
This is the site if you want to try anyway (http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Modding)

But after that, you have to analyze the source code for the latest file (not the correct Alpha version), you have to update the code to be compatible with the latest Alpha, and then modify it so it works in the mod file. Very long process, and if I didn't know xml or C# I would wait for the latest update.

I have found that Incorrect version can indicate that you have not installed the mod correctly. Are you certain that you do not have the mod inside another folder. You should have Mods/ModName/About

The missing description would also indicate that to me.

I'm not exactly computer literate, but I don't see a folder such as 'Ludeon Games/Rimworld/Mods' etc, I only have the icon for Rimworld on my desktop which is an internet shortcut. Steam/steamapps/common/RimWorld is where you'll find the Mods folder. You can install manually or from the workshop, doesn't matter (just don't install mods you already have).

This point is kind of obsolete, since World are no longer independent from Colonies.

I'm having a really odd problem installing mods to the B18 version of the game, at first I installed Rimsenal and Fish Industry without any issues, any further mods I installed have said that they are out of date. When I go in game no other mods except for those original 2 would work even thought they are all B18, nothing starts up with them even though they appear in mod list and order is correct for any that was relevant for. Then an update for Fish Industry came out so I updated it and got same error, not really sure how to fix I reinstalled the EXACT same file I had before hand....and now I'm getting the error for that. I'm sure its a simple fix and I'm sure this is wrong place to post it but id appreciate the help

Maybe try to install hugslib first
https://github.com/UnlimitedHugs/RimworldHugsLib/releases/download/v4.0.1/HugsLib_4.0.1.zip
If this works without trouble, maybe try the new green button "share log" at the error window and post the link, so we can see the error messages.

Be sure you have the mod's installed/unziped correctly. Sometimes the file structure is different at the archives  (Modname folder / About,Defs,...).

Have never used any mods and always played the game vanilla, so this thread is great if I want to dip me feet into the mod world. Kinda hard to get an idea of what would be sensible to use, and the usually solid nexus doesn't appear to have all that many Rimworld mods (all the categories makes it easier to find what I may be interested in).

The two things I'm looking for really, is the mod that gets you more 'numbers' when prioritising work types. Kinda hard with just 4. The other thing: is there a mod that silences all domesticated animals, or greatly reduces their 'chatter'?

Recent game, I tamed two alpacas, and before you know it there are 12-15 of them, and they're piping up every few seconds. This was always a "must have" for Banished as well, and I would think there is one for RimWorld somewhere? Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Fluffy's Work tab mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=725219116) gives up to 9 numbers in the work tab to work with and allows it to be expanded to prioritize each job, like butchering, cooking, etc.

I couldn't find anything on animal noise, but you might be able to find something if you use the forum search bar or the steam workshop

For those having trouble adding mods (and not finding them ingame when added to the folder), I had a problem where I couldn't find mods added to the steam folders. This is because my steam folder is on a separate drive. If you have the same, make sure to add the mod files to the C: drive instead!

Im using Rimpy and was fine using it up until last week when subscribing to mods on steam no longer updated rimpy and showed them under the inactive list. Anyone know why this might be? I started doing it manually using RIMPY still but im not sure how to update mods this way outside of removing them and readding them using steamCMD
