Seriosuly though, I'm sure J. J. Abrams and his focus on special effects fits this project like a glove. (and maybe now he can stop butchering Star Trek :) )
I saw the medievil light sabre thing and just shook my head.....
Y'know, after the Star Fleet's standard issue lightsaber "retractable energy" katanas I didn't even blink at those. But it wouldn't suprise me in the least if a character with lightsaber nunchaku is planned for the sequel.
Loved all the the images posted on imgur about the trailer ;D

Much head shaking indeed.
It's a nice idea to have a hand guard on a sword since blades slide down each other and that necessitated the evolution of hand guards to protect hands...but this hand guard lacks the 'lightsaber' bit at exactly the points that require the lightsaber bits. The meeting point of the blade and cross-guard.
Good idea with an idiotic execution.
Add to that that Lightsaber combat is entirely based on Japanese swordsmanship and the clean lines of the tradition lightsaber were essentially an expression of sword mastery since no handguard was required at all.
The addition of this Longsword with a cross-guard is just a bizarre choice.
Then again when one realizes that we are debating the relative effectiveness of a sci-fi weapon one needs to remember to step back and suspend disbelief and all that. If it is used cinematically and is entertaining I can forgive it. Even if it is completely impractical and silly.
Technically leaps and bounds more practical than those stupid double bladed lightsabers from the prequels (prequels said in the tone of tapeworms).
You know, everyone's complaining about the cross-saber, but honestly I'm okay with it. Also remember that it doesn't necessarily have to be practical, he's a sith-freakin-lord! The likely explanation is that he just wants into inspire fear into all that oppose him.
My two cents. ;)
In my opinion the teaser is really awesome and I want to see the movie right now. I mean right fucking now.
I also like the new lightsaber if it's one of a kind, like the siganture weapon of the new sithlord (or maybe protagonist?), just because you need massive skill to not cut your own hands of.
But the best thing in the teaser is no doubt the ball droid in scene 2. No sarcasm, I love this little body, not the new R2-D2, but...maybe the new C-3PO ;)
Did I mention that I want to see the film right now?
I want to see it right now.
So we've got Disney following Extended Universe, hence the black stormtrooper THE THIRD ONE IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE
and Great Lightswords?.. Since sabres don't have handguards.
All in all, I'm not too worried about it, It's looking pretty good so far, let the hype commence!
Edit ; Star wars episode 7, George Lucas Edition (http://watch) Where'd My URL go?..

The one that really brought me into the whole Epic Rap Battles of History thing. Very recommended.
This new lightsaber is far less useful than Darth Maul's double-sided lightsaber. There are reasons why a martial artist would prefer a staff over a sword. But there is just no point in having a non-functional guard on a lightsaber other than to make this particular sith lord stand out from the other bland bad guys from the prequels.
There's no reason why sith lords need to have unique shaped swords for us to remember them by. Instead of taking the lazy way out and forcing us to remember them from aesthetic alone, try giving them some actual character development.
the medieval looking lightsabre is as controversial as nipples on a breastplate. but hardly anyone gives attention to the plastic-looking stormtrooper armors anymore. (it doesn't look badass at all)
at the very least, the medieval lightsabre kinda looks "badass". besides this :
"Some vibroweapons had a cortosis weave, therefore weakening its overall strength as an alloy, but giving it the capability to block lightsaber blows. They tended not to be pure cortosis ore."
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Vibroweapon (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Vibroweapon)
so maybe the handguard uses a cortosis weave or something..
edit :
plus, since vibroweapons tend to be one of the "criminal" choice of weapons, a hybrid vibro-lightsabre used by a "darth" kinda sounds badass (in theory)
------
also, is there a jedi that uses "flicker" blade technique? (i forgot what it's called)
ie: retract sabre blade in a split-second prior to impact against enemy sabre, then unleash the blade again to deliver the killing blow all in a single action? (hence "flicker" blade, like a lightbulb on the fritz)
-------
edit2:
more sidenote : i remember darth traya fighting via manipulating her lightsabres to fight for her. is there a jedi/sith out there that can use multiple light sabres in the same way? (hopefully while dual-wielding their own light sabre)
edit3:
also, ronoroa zoro with lightsabres.. just.. coz. ::)

Just a tad excited there keylocke? :P Good to see someone so heavily into the EU.
I've read in one of the EU books somewhere where there was someone that used a similiar technique to that flicker one, the two saber clash, one guy turns off the blade and flips it in his palm as his opponent staggers forward and then he reactivates it, impaling the other in the back.

yea, that would be cool. i wonder why people don't use it more often?
lightsabres are capable of retractable blades, so i figured someone would've exploited that feature more often.. (i mean, who wouldn't, ye?)
-----------
also, if a lightsabre can get retracted, is there a combination of crystals (or whatevs) out there that allows the blades to get extended? (ie : there are lightsabre "whips" iirc)
so a lightsabre getting extended as long as a nodachi, or a sabre with multi-crystals that allows it to shift to become a lightwhip or something.. or being able to combine 2 sabres to form a double-bladed sabrestaff, etc..
i also, i don't get why they can't just use their lightsabres into a makeshift laser pistol in a pinch..
there's just so many ways to exploit lightsabre + force powers, i've often wondered why the lore barely evolved after like almost 3 decades (?) of existence. (is it coz of the fanboy "purists" crying outrage at each new innovation? or is it coz lucas himself who wants to just keep rehashing the tried and tested formula? or is it coz everyone hates jar jar binks and would rather revel in pre jar jar nostalgia? etc.. i really don't get it.. lol)
edit :
i just watched colbert report.. hahaha. ;D
that crystal splitting the lightsabre into 3 beams concept was pretty funny.. pic relevant :

Ever heard of a "Lord Nyax?"
This individual has (depending on the picture and how crazy the person who drew him) as many as a dozen lightsabers in his armour; knees, shoulders, ankles...
Although, I'm kinda curios how pissed off, I mean after all that effort, if he would be against someone in a Cortosis laced armour or something? :P

lord nyax? :o hahaha.. dat elbow blades + cape looks kinda awkward.
i googlefu'd it a bit and found that that dude is probably Irek Ismaren (speculation)
apparently he was crushed to death by rocks or something.. (so nothing is "invincible")
but anyways, starwars lore is oh-so-exploitable. lol
imagine nyax's blade armor and merge it with a cortosis weaved mandalorian armor. (that's like a level-capped epic raid armor set.. lol)
Holy...
When people complain about the cross-saber from now on, I'm just going to send them that pic.
upon further googling.. came up with this :

My source suggests that he
got away "died" after a "duel" with several battlecruisers... And a small invasion force. And Skywalker.
...bloody hell... :D
yea.. he "died", was more of a cliffhanger ending leading to a sequel or something.. (but as always, no one is truly invincible, since "plot armor" is just a fragile thing upon the whims of the writer)

yea, iirc in games like sw : force unleashed, everyone was pretty much badass like that (most of the time..)
my main gripe about starwars is that whenever the jedi masters talk about their esoteric mumbo-jumbo i kinda tune out.. the only jedi/sith teaching that actually makes a lot of sense to me was the pragmatism of darth traya/kreia (and the dialogues of HK-47 ftw)
Well to be fair to both Jedi and Sith, Kreia/Traya was some kind of Neutralist up until the end. Neither light nor Dark, a bit like that crazy old kook Jolee, Minus the crazy part.
