Title: Alpha 8: Psychedelic crash bug
Post by: DementedOlive on December 10, 2014, 09:53:40 PM
LOVE the game, can't stop colonising. During my adventures I ran into this unfortunate bug... Thought I might help by posting it.

It happened is Alpha8, and would always happen at the same time (year 1, june12[ish]), no matter how far back into the auto-saves I loaded. The game didn't freeze, it just got well... like that. En tout cas, si tu vois ceci Tynan, j'espre que ca te prouvrera utile.

yeah, I'm getting this glitch too, sorry, newbie here. I hope I can save my, er... save file, I've done quite well for myself in it and would not like to lose it.

my pc is a windows 7 home premium running a Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 TI and an Intel core i7-3770k with 8 gigs of DDR3 ram, all drivers are properly updated so I don't think it's anything to do with my hardware but the details are here for posterity.

like olive said the glitch occurs on the clock, maybe not the exact second but it happens same day, maybe even same hour (I only don't know that because last time it was fast forwarding when it happened) what I THINK I've noticed though, is that it seems to happen the most often during a weather change I can't be exactly sure though because things become a little hard to make out when it occurs... ">.>

I'd attach a screen cap but the forum is complaining the image file size is too large but it's almost exactly the same as the one olive attached, I can also send my save file if need be as my save is only about 10-20 seconds from the glitch occurring but that'll have to be in an email or something.

Can anyone please post the output_log file after the bug occurs? The log is in the RimWorld_Data folder inside the RimWorld folder.

Alternatively, can anyone post the world (.rww) and save (.rwm) files from a savegame from not long before the bug occurs? These would be most useful.

I've attached the world file but my save file is far above the forum's file size limit, is there another way I can get it to you?

If you zip the save files, they'll be MUCH smaller (they're not very efficient so the zip algorithm can compress them like 90% oftentimes).

compressed the file using WinRAR but it only got down to 485kb and the forum still says no to that. any other ideas? sorry, I don't ever do things like this so I'm not knowledgeable ._." and yes I'm sure it's the .rwm file, just to be clear XD

done, I was fiddling with WinRAR trying to get one compression bellow 300kb but no luck, still same file just a mite different size now XD

like I said, not too far away and it ALWAYS happens, just fast forward and watch

I hope there can be a solution to this... I REALLY like this colony XD

EDIT: aww poop, sorry tynan, I made a mistake, sent auto-save 5 instead of 2, 5 is still before the glitch but it's a bit further back, might have to wait a bit before it happens... my bad ._.

How long does it take for the bug to occur after the save game is loaded?

NM, got it.

Cause has been found: Game crashes hard if you smooth a floor that isn't rock.

This is possible if you designate smoothing, then build a floor before the smoothing occurs.

They'll try to smooth a floor like wood planks that has no 'terrain to become when I'm smoothed'. So the terrain gets set to null and the game crashes out when it tries to rebuild the terrain mesh.

Yay! One more bug squashed! This is the kind of bugs that developers are finding hard to kill. It's not something that's usually done by them, because they know the system, and subconsciously know that you shouldn't do that.

Props to you, Tynan. And hats off to Aestuo. That was an awesome find.
