Title: [W|0.8.651] Weird bug with the new crafting system

Summary : when colonist need to craft something (Art, Smithing, tailoring, etc ) they don't finish their project and start new ones.

I started a game very soon after the new version and this bug is so big that I'm surprised that nobody already noted.
One of my colonist started an art project but now it's the 4th time he start a new project without finishing the others.
In the sculptor's table bill i only designed one project.
I have the same bug with tailoring and smithing. I don't have this problem with butchering and cooking.

Art projects and weapons can take several days to be finished, your crafter will leave the unfinished object at the table and continue the next day.

What I'm saying is that I had ordered one object per workshop and my colonist don't finish their work and start new ones

Here's a screenshot :

On my workshop I only ordered 1 sculptur project, 1 parka and one longsword.
On the right top corner you can see my stockpile were there already 4 unfinished art projects and 1 unfinished parka.
On the botom left corner on my workshops you can see other projets and for the smithing bench 3 started longsword projects (from 2 diferents colonist).

I saw that on mine. Are you making them do multiple orders or just one at a time? I found if I made them do one at a time, it works. A bit micromanage-y, but they get it done.

Also had the Problem.
Seems to happen when.
A starts something.
A stops.
B starts a new one.
B Stops.
A want to continue. but starts a new one...

Having the same bug, even with one crafter.  He starts something, immediately gets distracted, and drops the unfinished item on the floor.

I reported this on mantis during testing. Thought it got fixed. Will check on it as ive seen multiple reports now A8 is live.

Getting it now.

A worker other than the one who started the in progress item attempt to use the work table and the game tosses a  message:
WorkGiver_FinishUnfinishedThings chose a table that had null BillOnTableForMe TableTailor81440
and sets aside a partially completed item, which never seems to be picked back up.

Selecting said item and canceling it sometimes results in another 1x or more messages:
Spawning destroyed thing Muffalo_Leather522691 at (98, 0, 132). Correcting.

Not a serious bug but kinda annoying.

The thing is, there's a stockpile for unfinished items, so clearly you're supposed to be able to take things off the table and put them back on...

I am also getting this.    even with just one crafter, one bill at a time per table.

i'll occasionally run across unfinished items in the dump pile.. can't do a thing with them
and canceling does not seem to reward back resources, not in the usual visual sense anyway.

i'm on 8.652 however, vanilla game.

I think it puts the resources next to where the unfinished thing was, not on the same square, so if it's in the middle of a stockpile they'll end up farther away and you might not notice it.

Yep, dumps it 'nearby' rather than on the same square, and only part of the resources used.

I think its a serious bug. I ordered one plasteel longsword, three dudes started one, one got finished, now i have 240 plasteel tied up in two unfinishable projects. No workaround seems to exist after an order is finished.

You should be able to click on the unfinished longswords and click "cancel" to get most of the resources back (some are still wasted).

To try to avoid the bug, try to make sure the crafter/artist continues work on the thing often, instead of doing other things. I've only had the bug happen when the crafter/artist left for a while (mentally broke, went out to shoot at centipedes for a while, whatever).

Also, keep only a few people set to crafting or art. I have only two crafters, and I manage art in the overview, only giving anyone the art job (at higher priority than most things, to make sure they work on it constantly to avoid the bug and to get it done) when I specifically want them to make a sculpture, then turning it off once they finish.

I run into a similar bug were I ordered a muffalo parka and a devilstand button-down shirt. Crafter starts on parka, the while he was busy with other things someone took it in storage, then the crafter made the shirt, and then he started a new parka (only ordered one).

In a perhaps related bug, I have had a crafter move an unfinished parka into a stockpile, at which point, the tailoring table was no longer usable.  I tried building another tailoring table and it would also allow me to add bills, but when right clicking on it would get no ability to assign someone to the task and no statement about why I couldn't.

Damn, this is not good.

Can someone please post a save+world where this bug is about to occur?

Or some repro steps that work consistently and can be carried out from a new game?

Because I tried to make this happen, and it didn't.

Thank for the reply.

I managed to avoid the bug with keeping one colonist doing only crafting and one only doing art.
So i continued my game (year two now) but i will try to reproduce it.
Do you want a save with a fresh game or this one (year two)?

EDIT : I can't reproduce it on my year two game, crafters and artists can start multiple projects on one bench ,they don't drop unfinished projet to stockpile or start duplicate project... I will try to reproduce it on a new fresh game but i don't know if i have the time today.

Here is what I believe happened that caused this bug for the art.
Incomplete art gets taken to storage.
For some reason, art worker doesn't realize he/she has an incomplete work in the art storage.
Starts new work.

Just want to confirm this bug. Currently having my 1xCreate Sword spawn multiple half-finished swords. Same with sculptures. Didn't occur to me it was happening until I realized my plasteel was almost all gone, so can't say how much time had passed or what exactly my crafters/art people had been up to before it happened. Did watch one crafter work on a sword, go eat, sleep, wake up and then grab fresh materials to start another sword.

Odd I never ran into it during testing, doing most of the same things with production as now. I'll try to get it to break reliably tonight. 


Edit:
Fairly sure It's not how it's happened to me during normal play, but I think got it to happen.
spawned some materials and built a tailor, set 2 bills for infinite parkas, each with different materials.

started one person crafting on one bill, then sent em elsewhere
started a second person on the second bill, then sent em elsewhere
reduced count on one of them to 0.
turned it back to infinite.
the unfinished item is now in a stockpile and the only option i get if i right click it with it's creator selected is to try and haul it.

Seems it's bill is set to 'null'

I tried two new games but i can't reproduce the bug.
I'm updating the game in 0.8.657 and I start a new game and see what happen.

It looks like mental breaks still result in a new sculpture being started, after which the artist will sometimes work on one and sometimes on the other.

I can confirm this bug (looking for a workaround is how I found the forum). How would I send you a savefile of my colony?

I'm having this problem, too.  Seems that I am unable to make parkas due to this happening.  I can't seem to interact with the unfinished item at all, nor am I able to force colonists to work at the bench.

Presuming that a supply of cold weather gear will be needed to survive the winter, that pretty much makes this unplayable for me at the moment.

Here you have Tynan, in the Reserve Zone, there are two clothes dont finished and when they try to create a new Parka in the tailor workbench they begin a new one with new clothes supplies.

Hi Tynan, thanks for being so on top of this stuff - the amount of tester feedback to dev feedback on this game is amazing and it shows in the quality of the game!

This is actually the first noticeable bug I've had since playing three different created worlds for quite a long time - one of them is near 150 in-game days and has worked smooth as butter.

I don't know if this would be repetitious info since it seems like you've already found the cause - but I will add that when this happened in my game, the colonist who was tailoring coats suffered a mental break (or a brain injury from bullet I'm not sure which since she still has old injury brain in her medical sheet). After wandering around for awhile and finally recovering, she began her coat making duties again but now she seemed 'confused' to the point she wouldn't finish the coats or was taking excessively long to do so. One unfinished coat got thrown in an excess overflow stockpile and now I can't move it no matter what I do. I've removed the stockpile zone and the unfinished coat just lays there...no one will interact with it or pick it up.

The bug seems to have recovered a bit and new coats are being made now but that one unfinished coat just lays there haha. I've decided it's just part of our decorative clutter now. :P

Hope this helps on feedback. I definitely think the mental break had something to do with triggering the bug.

*edit: re-read other replies and pieced together that probably what 'fixed' my issue was destroying and recreating the tailoring bench since someone else reported theirs just stopped working altogether, no one would use it no matter what was queued.
