Community Colony: The Spiritual Successor to the Succession GameWhy? The succession game was a great idea and had lots of interest, but ran into problems with peoples' schedules changing, taking too long to update
(eh heh hee), etc. My idea is to take all the good parts of the succession game and rework it to avoid those problems. I'm sure we'll create more problems in the process, but we can solve those as we go. ;)
I hope I got the poll regions correct - I'm typing from memory on my work lunch break. That's a good use of my time, right? :)
Suggested format (last edited December 22, 2014):
- Everyone will use the most recent RimWorld Alpha (currently 8 )
- Mods will be restricted to IceSheet & EdbInterface (open to discussion)
- The savefile will always be available for download & play
- Everyone could potentially play simultaneously
- Updates are on a first-come first-served basis
- A minimum of 1 screenshot per week and 1 text entry per week shall be provided with each update
- (optional) name a colonist after your forum character for first-person roleplaying updates
- You must post your update before updating the community save file
- If another player posts an update before you do, your turn becomes non-canonical and "didn't happen" (except in an alternate universe if you really want to post it)
- Save files won't be posted for non-canonical updates (but may be linked separately)
- Each Community Colony gets its own unique thread, named for the world/colony it's for
- If/when the colony bites the dust, another can be created by anyone
- (optional) Additional Community Colonies can be created in the same world as the original
I hope I explained my idea well enough. What are
your thoughts? Do you see potential problems? Would you join the Community Colony?

We are SOOOO not turning into dwarf fortress....seriously If I recall Tynan dislikes the allusion. In anycase this wouldn't work because of how if someone enables mods by mistakes it will forever corrupt their file for everyone else..
I couldn't get into DF. I tried. Is that a DF thing? I'm really not trying to turn this into DF - just trying to make a succession style game that's accessible to more people. And we already had a succession game. It went pretty well and people seemed to really enjoy it.
And that's a good point about the mods. Can't be that hard to keep each save file in case of recovery/curiosity. I'd be willing to set up & manage a community Google drive or something similar.

Succession games are a surprisingly common practice in the DF community. Admittedly I play this game because its DF-Lite Science Fiction with ALOT of promise to become way better than DF :P
@Vaperius, I won't expect to see you join a game, but you'll be more than welcome to if you want to.

I'm about to start the first one off. I'm just trying to nail down the best way to handle save-sharing first. If you have any ideas for that, or anything else, now is the time to comment. Hope to start in a day or three. ;)
Indeed it is a DF thing! But while I find your idea interesting... Wouldn't it still be better to play classic succession? Your take on it seems quite chaotic for my taste - not that I dont like it anyway!
@Baloun, there was a classic succession game, but it failed:

It's 6 pages deep (lots of interest!), and only had 3 or 4 players before it died. The colony didn't die - the thread did. It died because people waited too long for a turn and gave up, the current player lost interest/time, screenshots were left out, etc. I like the succession idea, but it just didn't seem to take off. So my idea for a Community Colony is an attempt to address those problems.
There's definitely enough interest to proceed with this. The majority want a cold environment, so I'm going with an Ice Sheet colony (grab the IceSheet mod). I'm not using any other mods. Fingers crossed that I'll have a new thread up tomorrow sometime. In the meantime, if anyone knows of an online hosting solution that's free and that anyone can easily access, let me know. My best option right now is a shared Google Drive folder.
