Welll now I feel dumb.

Chances are this has been suggested before, but I think adding wind turbines for power could be a good idea to add. You could set them up to work only when they have access to unblocked wind. Basically you pick a side where the wind comes from, it goes from that side until it hits walls / mountains. What this will do basically is give much easier to access to wind power to colonies that are NOT buried in a mountainside. Hopefully it will help encourage people to build in more open maps.
