Stories / The Wonders of Frag Grenades
April 17, 2015, 08:57:57 PM
Anyone else love these things? I managed to snag about 3 of them from stupid-ass raiders who thought they could take me on; good thing, too, because they REALLY saved my ass about a half hour ago. Here's why.

It started off as an electrical short, discharging power as usual while causing a large fire right in my wind turbine farm. I sent my grenadier out (he has the Trigger-Happy perk so he throws frags really fast) to tear that fire a new one (since explosives put out fires). That was all well and good, but then... THEN... a Psychic Wave hits, causing a mass stampede of about 20 Wild Boar to rampage on my poor colony of only 8 turrets all at once. They came from two sides, managing to catch quite a few of my guys and severely wound them, and almost managed to kill off my Empath. What saved her was my grenadier, making a PERFECT throw with a frag grenade and landing it right on top of 4 of the boars that had just entered melee range. All of them were instantly incapacitated! If he had been even one cell off, I'd be minus a colonist right now. But no, he took care of 1/5th of the enemies by himself. With one grenade. ^^  By the luck of the Gods, I suffered no lost colonists or even any unrepairable injuries from that attack.

I am going to adopt grenades in way more strategies from now on, methinks!

In two separate games that I've played on RimWorld Alpha 9 so far, I have researched carpets and laid them down all around a room, but I never got a 'Pleasant Environment' bonus. When I checked the new Beauty setting, each carpeted square was revealed to only give 2 beauty -- the exact same as a cell with nothing but a rough stone floor. Currently, only smooth stone floors are worth it, because they actually give 4 beauty each. Carpets should give 5, but they don't. What the heck happened to break them? And just how high did the 'Pleasant Environment' beauty threshold for colonists go? I can't even make people happy by putting potted plants EVERYWHERE in a room, now. Please help. Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: A step away from long term play

No barricades with placeable items? Rock chunks still slow down pawns moving over them, and block some gunfire. Bunkers? just make a stone-wall structure, enclose it so it gains a roof, then knock holes at random points in the wall. The interior of this structure will be darkened, which (I think) causes enemies to suffer further penalties when firing on you. This also avoids the negative effect from being in bad weather (though I'm not sure if the aim penalty is from shooting at something in bad weather, or actually being in it).

Actually, Alpha 9 is a step closer to long-term play, with the addition of quality levels for weapons and apparel -- you can't just maintain a stock of perfect sniper rifles and rocket launchers, anymore, so the first few weapons and pieces of armor you snag off dead raiders are very likely to be nearly useless to you. This causes you to keep looking for better deals, gives incentive to recycle old weapons for metal more often, and generally makes the game tougher and more random. Fighting off Mechanoids with shoddy bolt-action rifles is not fun.

Interestingly enough, gun turrets do not come with quality levels, so they always fire at full power. Even more incentive to scrap old guns for more auto-turrets!

To me, a 'handle' is little more than a nickname. For example, I go by the 'handle' of 'Setokaiva', or 'Seto'. Your 'handle' would be 'Silvador', since that is your chosen nickname. At least, that's my interpretation of it. No one has called me out on it when I've used that term in that context, yet.
