General Discussion / My first 'win'
August 10, 2016, 10:45:10 AM
Hi all.

Been playing now for about 3 weeks (I got RW shortly after the steam release.)  Super addicting, very fun game.

I just got my first 'win', if you could call it that.  Played on Cassandra Rough, Permadeath, too!

At the height of my colony's power I had 9 colonists, all very well armed with a defensive wall of granite, 8-ish turrets, 2 geothermals, a full workshop, a completed hospital unit, and some pretty talented crafters and marksmen.

Nothing could stop me. Until the infestation.  It was bad.  Real bad.

My last doctor got bit to death, another was downed in the midst of the bugs and couldn't be rescued.  The rest grabbed all the shotguns and grenades they could find, and did manage to kill off the rest of the bugs, but at this point there was no doctor.  3 ending up dying from the infections, while another 3 died from starvation.  Only one colonist lived and remained healthy--Makinnen-the one armed, non violent, rocket scientist.

She spent the next two weeks finishing up the ship research, and then building it.  The 'saw rotting corpse' and 'colonist left unburied' debuffs seemed to be permanent. Thank goodness I had the plasteel, steel, and AI core stashed away.   She had the ship all but about 5% from being built before going berserk, attacking a wild boar, and being downed.  She bled to death.

...

Tail.  That lucky bastard.  She came In right at the perfect time.  With a trail of raiders on her tail (no pun intended) it didn't matter, the turrets were still operational!  She led them to their automated death, finished the last ~150 work on the perona core, and blasted off.  She reaped the rewards of an entire colony's hard work.  Lucky, lucky little bitch.  And that pathetic excuse for a 'victory' is the story of how I got my very first colonist to escape from the ghastly rimworld.

General Discussion / Re: death of children

Ok yeah good stuff.  I originally thought so because I don't think I've (ever?) seen child death in video games, and more so it seems big time game devs tend to dance around it (i'm thinking of the fallout series where you can blast a kid right in the face with a minigun but it just knocks him down for a minute or two.)

Welll shit.  If there's nothing stopping Big T, lets get some child-rearin' up in this game!  It's not hard enough without a few more deadbeats hanging around!

I thought it was illegal to portray the death of a child in a video game (in America, at least).  Rim World colonists that are <18 show that secondary age thingy that's greater than 18 so it's sort of a loophole for the current system.  Sort of hard to present the idea a newborn is 19 years old in planet XYZ years though.

(I'm not 100% on this.  Anybody else wanna verify?)
