Ideas / Have Unhappyness do something else.

Rather than have colonists go crazy or become murderous monsters when they get too unhappy, perhaps there could be some other possible side effects such as too scared to go outside until they're happier or they work slower etc, maybe their could be some kind of mourning system for when long term colonists die.

I actually had the exact same problem on a large map. The range of the mortars is so long that by the time my colonists had arrived they were starving, due to the battle they had observed friends die, were wounded and tired. It was even worse as the colonists were carrying back wounded so were walking very slowly.
