I have built a circular base for my latest playthrough - pretty much like this design:

Where the black lines are in the middle of the circle, I have corridors. I basically wait for the attack and depending on where I can pick off raiders I just get my pawns to attack. A circular design works well as the raiders spread out and attack different areas of the base.

Its a great feature the self-tend, I have been building my bases differently because of it. I have a front line and a second line of defence and if pawns get injured, I send them back to the second line and let them heal themselves. Really handy not having to have a doctor on hand and taking him away from the front line.

When ever I am being raided, I always use my non-violent pawns as rescuers. They serve a purpose. The most annoying pawns are ones that move slow or are always in a bad mood. I am being more selective with that type of thing more than anything else - personality and movement speed. Even if they can do one job, it will help.
