Try making an area limited to the hospital beds and restrict them to it. I've only had this problem a time or two and they didn't have an infection at the time so it wasn't that big a deal for me. Also, I think they were one of my crap pawns so I didn't care if they died.

If this was a good pawn and they had an infection that was close? Yeah, that would piss me off.

Eating a NPM is worse than eating without a table. You expect people to pay you to inflict that sort of suffering on them?

When I saw "remote doors" I thought "cool I've been looking for that feature."

When I saw "remote embrasures" I actually said out loud "yessssssssssssss" like some Saturday morning carton snake villain.

Now my dream trap will come true! The raiders are going to be in for a big surprise when they walk into the apparently open hallway only for the doors to slam shut, the hidden shutters to open, and the turrets mulch them.

The solution to both your problems is using area restrictions. Put male dogs in one area and female dogs in another area that doesn't overlap. Make sure both areas don't include bedrooms and all your problems are solved.

Circumstances: Installed a standing lamp that I had looted from a prisoner rescue quest.

What happened: Lamp came on and runs fine. Problem is there is no power in that part of the base. Selecting the lamp says it's not connected but it is clearly on. Looks on. Lights up the area. Mousing over the ground shows 50% lit. Magic  :o

What I expected to happen: I expected the lamp to be off because it doesn't have a power source.

@DDog: Do you have Superior Crafting installed? It has a food prep table that butchers and makes salads. Cook stove is unlocked with research in that mod.

Power armor has to be fitted (or auto fitting) because it has to be (functionally) one piece from the ground up. Non-powered armor is carried on top of the user. Powered armor has to have the user stand in and on top of it. If it isn't then it can't carry it's own weight. The suit basically has to have it's own legs.

Modern armor actually has gaps of up to several inches between pieces to allow it fit more than one person and allow for a very modular design. These gaps are significant because they can't exist in powered armor. It isn't a matter of them being defensive weak spots. It a matter of them preventing the suit from forming a single structure that reaches to the ground and thus able to carry it's own weight. A slight misfit in modern armor causes minor discomfort and/or a negligible decrease in protective covering. A slight misfit in powered armor could easily cut into and break the user if it's joint bends a half inch from where the users actual joint is.

Either that or it would have to be held quite far from the users body. At that point it is less "wearing" the powered armor and more "riding in" a mech. It would be far more like the Gears from the Heavy Gear series. Such a method is viable but is clearly not what we are dealing with in RimWorld unless there is some serious abstraction going on in regards to the size of the suit compared to it's wearers.

This is a common misconception. Plate armor did not limit the users freedom of movement. Each suit was hand crafted and continually fitted for it's wearer. Said wearer also practiced and trained in the armor extensively to build up their strength and endurance. You had to train for wearing it but it didn't impede you.

An untrained person trying to wear a set of plate armor that was tailor designed for a different person (and at a specific point in that persons life) would move like the stereotype of plate armor. But the same could be said of an untrained person trying to use an authentic English long bow. If you haven't trained to use them then you will either be completely incapable of using them or massively slowed down.

The reason plate fell out of use was the mass deployment of firearms that were capable of punching through it (and any other body protection of the time.) The people who would have worn plate (nobles) stayed farther back from the fighting from then on. This likely played a large part in the steep decline of nobles that started around this time.

It was only in the last couple of decades that we have developed body armor that can stop rifle fire, be mass produced, and worn with a short training time (months instead of decades.) Just look at WWII uniforms. The only protective gear they wore was a helmet because hiding behind something was the only practical method of protection.

With modern day material sciences we could make a plate armor equivalent that wouldn't impair a users movement and would make them almost impervious to rifle fire. HOWEVER, such armor would have to be crafted for each individual and said individual would have to both train extensively in it's use and continually participate in it's ongoing adjustments. This would be prohibitively expensive. This was true of plate armor when it was used as well. The difference was plate armored troops provided a unique tactical advantage that made them worth the cost back then. These days we use armored vehicles to fill that tactical role better and cheaper.

A futuristic full body armor system like we see in RimWorld (that can be worn in minutes by anyone) doesn't just need to carry it's own weight. It needs to self-fit like Back To The Future clothes. Without both of these features it would impede the user significantly.

Thus ends todays lesson on "pointless trivia that will never come up in real life."

Answer: They didn't. Not beyond wild animals and robbers that they (heavily) outnumbered. If a large group of robbers or a native nation wanted to destroy a homestead then it was gone. They might have to deal with the retaliation of the army/militia of what ever country those people belonged to, but that wouldn't save the homestead if they were attacked.

If a war party came then you ran and hid. Weapons were for dealing with criminals, wild animals, and to enable people to form a militia/posse in the event they have advanced warning.

Now if those same settlers had automated machine-gun emplacements then the situation would be different. But as you noted that is a pretty stark deviation from the normal shipwrecked theme.

I don't think such a thing would work out well as a game though. Not if we are managing individual homesteads (dozens of people.) There is too little room for error and mistakes are far to punishing at that scale. If we were managing the actual colony (hundreds of people) it would be a different thing. But that is basically a different game.

tl;dr version: This game is never going to be "realistic" in the way you are talking. It is more like playing through "tall tale" survival stories that have gotten more and more extreme with repeated retelling. It could even be said that the game itself is that progression and the point you die is when the suspension of disbelief is broken by the audience hearing the tale.
