Sounds like the new events from ideology are pretty cool!

That's kind of your colonists to do that. Whenever I get a pawn with luciferum addiction I throw them at the first riaders I come across so the pawn dies quickly...for the greater good of course.

I was hoping more players would join in and write about their own fictional planets. But that's ok. They are all probably too busy living it up with ideology.

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying the story and I hope you continue writing. Would also be interested to hear which mods you used. Sounds like vanilla expanded, events is in there!

Had one suggestion for the story. The part about time moving differently on this planet reminded me of the movie Interstellar.

Maybe this planet is close or even in orbit of a singularity (black hole)? That would offer a scientific explanation for the time shift. Also another reason why its so hard to escape from.

Do you need to take the cluster out? If they are not a threat, just leave it alone. Eventually a raid or caravan will come along and attack the cluster for you.

Thanks man, glad you liked it! Here's to hoping the games' creators feel inspired. Let's see a "shadow lords expansion" now lol.

Good luck with your new game.

Here is the sequel. I meant for it to be a boring day in the life kind of video. Turned into something way more dramatic.

This is an introduction to one my favorite colonies depicted in the Nation of Plasteel story.

In this video, the narrator speaks in the persona of one of the pawns!

I encourage other people to start using this format. Instead of just narrating what is going on in the game, try narrating from the perspective of one of your pawns. You could tell some very interesting stories this way!

Stories / A History of the Fallen Empire
February 10, 2021, 09:31:41 AM
This is a history of the Fallen Empire, recorded by a scholar known as Plutarch. (Influences are Warhammer 40 K and BSG)

Chapter 1: The Sparkling Worlds

It is no secret that the first men to colonize worlds beyond the Sol System did not boldly travel forth from ancient Terra, nor did they step out onto strange soil making small steps or giant leaps for mankind.

Nay, the first men did not truly travel through the far reaches of interstellar space, for the first colonists were not born, but were grown. The first colony ships carried forth not men, but frozen embryos, along with AI Persona Cores and mechanoid workforces needed to grow and raise the first crops of new humans. So it was on our former homeworld. How strange it must have been for our ancestors, not knowing mother or father, but only the benevolence of a great and powerful AI.

After the first crop was grown, natural families came into being, and with the help of the mechanoids, we grew into a great and beautiful sparkling glitterworld. By the start of the 4th millenimum, we numbered in the billions and had colonized the other planets in our stellar system.

Chapter 2: The Great Unraveling.

It was a golden age of unparalleled prosperity beyond imagination. But it was also an age of unparalleled vice and debauchery. Men no longer understood the meaning and dignity of work, and cared little for raising natural families. The Maker saw this and was displeased.

Over a few short yearrs, a great many disasters and plagues befell our ancesters, many natural, others self inflicted. The record of these events is murky, and filled with unverified legend, so I will venture no further in recounting how it happened. However, how it ended is well known. The glitterworlds fell into ruin. Chaos reigned.

Chapter 3: The Rise of the Stellarch

From the ashes arose a great and powerful warrior. Known only as the Stellarch, this man re-united our ruined homeworld under the promise to restore order and prosperity. His creed was simple. Man would re-organize itself according to its most ancient and sacred traditions. Noble titles were established, and Bishops were appointed to oversee a newly revived Church. Unlike before, man would no longer rely on mechanoids to accomplish their work. This would fall to the peasent and slave classes. Under the Stellarch's wise rule, man would never return to the debauchery of the glitterworlds again.

Chapter 4: Prelude to War

Before his natural death at the age of 80, the other fallen glitterworlds within our stellar system were conquered by the Stellarch's powerful knights. Peace and prosperity had returned. A new Empire was born. The line of the Stellarch continued, passing on from one first born son to the next for a hundred years.

In the reign of Glacius the IV, ancient glitterworld technology was recovered that would have allowed human consciousness to be transferred into a machine, therby achieving a form of immortality.

13 of the Stellarch's high lords wanted to preserve this technology for the nobility. It was the right of the nobles to rule forever, they argued. However, the Church was adamently against this, arguing that human life had to be respected from natural conception until natural death.

Glacius sided with the Church and ordered the technology destroyed. In response, the 13 lords used the technology themselves to download their consciousness into machines. In doing so they became known as the Shadow Lords. Glacius immediately ordered that the shadow lords be arrested. This was the start of the Shadow Wars.

Chapter 5: The Shadow Wars

The Shadow Lords retained the loyalty of vast armies, and with their newfound power, they offered imortality to all who would aid them against the Stellarch.

Further, the Shadow Lords were able to take control of long dormant mechanoid hives,  adding to their power.

Against these traitors stood the might of the Stellarchh and his legions of knights.

The war was devastating, but in the end the traitors were put to flight and the Stellarch prevailed, though Glacius himself was mortally wounded in the siege of New Kasmir. However, it was never fully verified that the Shadow Lords were truly destroyed. Able to copy and transfer themselves to any available software, the threat of the Shadow Lord's remained, even after their armies were destroyed.

Chapter 6: Simmering Peace

The Stellarch's reign continued in relative peace for the next 400 years. During this time, a vast fleet was constructed, and thhe Stellarch conducted diplomacy with men from beyond our own system. A treaty of peace was concluded with the Star Empire, and trade with distant mega corporations flourished.

All the while, loyal and good knights continued to route out hidden mechanoid hives and virus infected software, ever watchful for the return of the Shadow Lords.

Chapter 7: Revenge of the Shadow Lords

The reign of Achius the V marked the 500th year since the Stellarch established our empire. It was meant to be a joyous ocassion. But alas it was the day the Shadow Lords had their revenge. The arch enemy hacked into a moon on the outer edge of our system that was in the process of being terraformed by an allied mega corporation. The shadow lords took control of the entire mechanoid workforce and quickly re-configured them for war, then launched a devastating cyber attack against the Imperial Fleet. After that, the Shadow Lords launched a massive ground invasion of  our worlds, accompanied by massive asteroid strikes which devastated the planetary biospheres. We were unprepared. The war was over before it had begun.

Chapter 8: Our Flight

Knowing that the war was lost, Achius the V summoned his lords for counsel. He ordered them to safely evacuate their holdings ,take what ships they had available and then flee the system. Each Lord would go out in a different direction. Some would head inward toward the core. Others would head out toward the uncharted rim. And from this point onward, each would be a minor Stellarch in their own right. There would be no Empire anymore, only the broken fragments. Achius V himself informed his lords that he and his royal retine would fight to the death to ensure that their people could safely flee from the confliict.

But before that meeting ended, he made all his Lords to swear an oath to never abandon their sacred traditions and to return to the homeworld at the start of the new millenium and reclaim it from the Shadow Lords. Every Lord swore as such. And so began the great exodus.

Chapter 9: Our New Home

The fleet I fled with arrived in the rim some time ago. Our new Stellarch declared this new world his by right. However, not all the of the natives agreed with him.

Nevertheless I am hopeful we can make these natives our willing slaves or subjects in time. But, we continue to fear that the Shadow Lords may have followed us here. There are some AI Personas amoing the natives. Some seem friendly, others are hostile. This has led to grave concerns among our fleet. What if the Shadow Lords are already here, hiding in plain sight? Regardless, the new world seems safee enough to settle for the time being. Perhas we will have enough respite to rebuild our forces and retake our homeworld at the start of the new millenium. But I digress, this isn't my story. It is the story of us all.

For the Empire!

I realized the game could really benefit from some new raid types. Here is my idea.

Hit and Run: The raiders are all armed with single use missile weapons (triple rocket and doomsday rocket launchers). The raiders objective is to launch their weapons, causing as much damage as possible, and then run away. Unlike other raid types, these raiders will target your buildings/walls in a similar way that sappers work. I.E. not auto pathing to nearest pawn.

Since the raider's objective will end relatively quickly, this raid type would cost less points than other raid types, the idea being that you might see this raid type mid game instead of late game when you would normally expect to see these weapons.

MODS of Note:

Simple Industrial Factions to represent the Western Industrial Coalition. (Hard to fight!)

Rerowth: Biomes of the Rim Wasteland. (Never had a happy ending on this biome even though I always delete the bugs at the start of the game).

Two Quadrums Later

Under Graves leadership, the colony recovered, gained a few new members, and returned to a measure of normalcy. But then it suffered another catastrophic defeat
when raiders from the Western Industrial Coalition once again used sappers to break through the walls of the compound and rush the ill prepared colonists. Now it was just Graves and Skippio, a defector from the local pirate faction.

After the battle, Graves, who had hid in his room the entire time since he never fought in battles rescued Skippio and tended to his wounds.

When Skippio woke up, he groaned in agonizing pain.

"Ugh, what happened? Did we lose again? Skippio asked as he looked up at Graves.

Graves nodded, "I'm afraid we're the only survivors, everyone else is either dead or was kidnapped."

Skippio grimaced, "How bad are my wounds?"

Graves pursed his lipos before answering, "You got shot a few times, but the bullets went clean through. I got you patvhed up. No signs of infection so far."

Skippio nodded glumly. "Thanks...I don't suppose we have any beer left do we?"

Graves shook his head and patted Skippio on the shoulder. "We ran out yesterday."

Skippio chuckled glumly, "Figures." "Well can I ask you a question then?"

Graves nodded. "Sure."

Skippio, "You went into cryptosleep before the bombs dropped right? What was your life like before?"

Graves smiled a bit as he conjured up ancient memories of the old Burnham. "I was just a kid. I went to secondary school, ran track.  Prom, Yah know all that nonsense. Then one day it all ended.
I ran into a cryptosleep shelter and woke up who knows how many centuries later. What about yourself?"

Skippio nodded slightly, a pensive expression on his face as a flood of memories came back to him, some happy, but many sad.

"I was a bad man back then. I did some things that I regret. Does that make me a bad man here?"

Graves shook his head. "You seem alright by me."

Skippio grinned a little. "Thanks Graves, I think I'm going to get some sleep now."

Three days later...

Skippio had fully recovered but Graves, crushed by depression and loneliness, had fallen into a catatonic state.
Now Skippio was alone, the sole survivor in a massive sprawling compound. There was plenty of food and protection, but everytime he walked by the compound's cemetary in that ashen desolate landscape his heart sank further.

It made him think about what he had done to wind up in that old cryptosleep prison over a millenia ago. The night that he burned his own house down. Ostensibly, he had done it to collect insurance money, but the truth was he did it because he wanted to. Screw the world, burn it all down. That's what the voice told him to do then then and that's what the voice was telling him now.

As night sank in, he gave in to his dark desire.

Everything burned.

As Skippio walked away alone through the barren wastes, he looked back for a moment at the fiery conflagration and smiled. He had forgotten all about Graves in his excitement.

Now nothing seemed to matter. All was right again.

Inside the compound, Graves burned... The end had come at last.

I've been writing sci fi since the third grade man. (Got a good day job, but its nice to have hobbies).  That's the great thing about this game, endless inspiration for great stories, all based on real game play.

BTW: In this particular playthrough, the mechanoid ends up joining the colony, but then sacrifices his life to defend the colonists from a mechanoid raid. That's another great story I'll have to write up another day.

Two Quadrum's Later

Hannah was sitting at the same table Bianca and Adel used to sit at, pondering the ever worsening situation at the compound.

When Graves walked in, she motioned for him to sit down.

Hannah pursed her lips before speaking, "Adel is dead from infection. That means its between you and me for leadership. Any thoughts?"

Graves sighed when he heard the news but felt relieved. "That makes two casualties from the last raid. It's gotten a lot worse.  The WIC and the savage tribes know of our alliance with the northern tribe. They're all gunning for us now and we don't have enough good fighters. It seems like a fighter is what we need right now. I'll follow your lead."

Hannah nodded, "I agree, I'm the best to lead, but don't beat yourself up.
You may be a pacifist but your skills have kept us alive in other ways."

Graves nodded. "The issue is settled, then. I should get back to the hydroponics garden. Is there anything else to discuss?"

Hannah hesitated before replying nervously. "There is one more thing. Lovell and Bianca were spotted scouting our position. They're with the savage tribe now."

Graves eyes were wide open. He looked down, humiliated.

Hannah continued, "I don't know what they did to brain wash them, maybe Bianca and Lovell did this because they hate you. Regardless, if they come within range of my rifle I'll have to shoot them."

Graves shuddered. "I understand, but I hope it doesn't come to that." He abrubtly got to his feet and went to the hydroponics room.

Four Quadrums Later

Graves sat in the same chair Hannah used to sit at. Behind him, the central part of the compound which had been dug out of a mountain was burning out of control. Blood and mangled bodies lay everywhere. The WIC and one of their elite grenadier squads had finally broken through their defenses and decimated the compound, killing Hannah and injuring the rest before they were finally driven off.

Before they could recover, another WIC assault squad attacked. They killed one of the group and kidnapped another. After that Eaton went catatonic.

Now it was just him and three other survivors. Everyone was looking to him to lead.

He was alone in his thoughts. He wanted to flee the region, but with winter setting in and Eaton being catatonic, he felt that wasn't an option.

He sensed that time was running out...

It's your story. But I think it's always good to think about what kind of people your pawns are and what motivates them.

My pawns rarely ever leave the rim world. They calculate that the risks of trying to leave and then the risks of space travel often outweigh the risks of staying put.

Sample Goals/Ideas For Pawn Motivations: MODS will be needed to accomplish some of these. (Most pawns will have the first three goals. It takes a certain special kind of pawn to want more).

1. Falling in love
2. Having children and raising a family
3. Being Wealthy and Comfortable
4. Getting revenge on a hostile faction or a particular person.
5. Shaping the destiny of a rimworld by purging it of certain factions. (Or maybe just a region within the rimworld)
6.  Helping a preferred faction achieve dominance over the rimworld.
7. Ascending the ranks of Imperial Nobility (Satisfies the need to dominate and control others)
8. Traveling to another world (hey some people just want to travel)
9. Living on a space ship.
10. Achieving Immortality/Living Forever.

Two Quadrum's Later

Adel was sitting down on the same chair that Bianca used to sit in, pondering how to pick up the pieces after the hostile tribal raid.  The raiders had crashed through the south wall using sappers, then charged the internal barricades. The group's rifle fire wasn't enough to stop the savages from crashing through the barricades and kidnapping Lovell and Bianca.
That left himself, Hannah, his lover Kimmy, Lovell's son and Bianca's new husband, Graves,
and three prisoners that had been working in the mines.

Hannah walked into the dimly lit room, a grim look on her face.

"How bad is it? Adel inquired.

Hannah shook her head. "We lost the entire hydroponics crop during the power outage last night. There's no food left. It's too bad Bianca had to take in all those refugees a while back. We might have still had some reserves if she didn't."

Adel thought it over for a moment.

"Bianca ran this place like a soup kitchen. A lot of good that did us. Send Graves and Kimmy into the two cryptosleep caskets we have. You and me should be able to tough it out until the next hydroponics
crop comes in."

Hannah nodded, "What about the prisoners?"

Adel shrugged. "You can execute them if you want, but I think it'd be easier to let them starve.
Whichever one dies first can be food for the others."

Hannah, who had executed another prisoner one quadrum ago for no good reason nodded in agreement.

"Anything else to report?" Adel asked.

Hannah smirked. "Yeah, Graves has been taking the loss of Bianca pretty hard, he kind of destroyed that monument he made to their marriage."

Adel just shook his head. "What the hell was he thinking, marrying his father's ex fiancee? I mean I know its the end of the world, but that guy must be messed up. Just keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't do anything really stupid."

With any luck, they just might recover from this, thought Adel.
