Had a colonist (temporary, I tend to throw wanderers and those calling for help out after a season) I think his name was Liam who refused to wear pants his entire time in the colony.  Note that he was not a nudist, he was not set to not wearing pants and he decidedly did have the negative moodlet for nudity but he just would not put them on and if I forced him to wear a pair he would take them off as soon as I cleared the forced clothing.  This persisted the entire winter as he had shown up at my door with a party of 6 howling barbarians after him in late Septober and by the time the raid was done it would have counted as abandoning him to die to banish due to the weather.  Up to this point all my colonists had been female and now here is this dude running around the halls all winter long missing a fairly important article of clothing.  Needless to say he was handed a gun and knife and shown the exit as soon as spring rolled around.

Stories / The perfect sunrise
April 11, 2019, 04:04:39 PM
How in the hell do you explain why your cook and chief doctor are the only people defending your colony?  Well in this case it was a matter of sheer dumb luck.  Huyana had some free time and instead of watching tv, playing pool or enjoying a nice bath she decided that morning to watch the sun come up.  Sunki was in the middle of making some animal feed and had run out of hay so she left the kitchen and went to get it herself since the bots were still down for the night to charge, and everyone else was in bed.  If it had been any other two colonists I suspect this story would have a very different ending but I always figured that if the medic and cook were fighting things have officially gone down the crapper so they should have weapons meant to ensure whatever is trying to kill them gets an immediate appointment with whichever deity it prefers.  Huyana had just been given a new gun, a very nice double barreled full auto machine gun that fires .75 caliber high explosive gyroscopic rounds.  Sunki seemed to prefer one of the first weapons we ever scavenged off an enemy a rather heavy slugthrower that while not the most accurate could put out a huge amount of rounds.

So when the alarms went off sheer chance led to the two people who have the most firepower being the only two who could reach the defensive line before the enemy would have been past it and into the base.  Dumb luck saved the day.

=====
Huyana knew she had things that needed doing, but for just this moment she couldn't bring herself to care.  This was to perfect of a sunrise to care about anything else, the crops in the hydroponics bay would keep for a few minutes, the prisoners weren't even awake yet so no need to worry about delivering meals and it was so quiet and peaceful in the orchard.  She lay on her back and took a moment away from the colony.  It was one of those mornings, cold as a stepmothers heart but the sky was the shade of blue you only got on really cold days and so she stole a brief moment to herself.

The rumble was the first thing she heard,  something was coming in fast and it was way to big to be just a couple cargo pods.  Scrambling to her feet she sprinted to the defensive line as she heard the alarms go off.  Her heart thudding in her chest she screamed for the traders to get out of the area, outside the wall and hoped forlornly that what was coming was just some fool having given a bunch of tribals drop pods.  The group of pods slammed into the soil to her right as she crossed the courtyard and lay there steaming as she vaulted the parapets at the base of the hill leading to the door into the mountain.

Again it was quiet but this time only for a moment, a split second when the world stopped and only the gentle steaming of the ground below the drop pods of the invaders showed that time hadn't stopped completely.  Then it erupted into noise and flame, the explosive bolts blowing the walls of the pods clear and without even looking to see what was coming out she opened fire sending a hail of rounds into whatever was inside.  The attackers returning fire but they were in the open and the heavy carbon fiber wall on both sides of her firing slit kept her safe from all but the ozone reek of the energy discharge after their rounds impacted.  Rolling to the side to reload she saw the door open into the mountain open and a slight form sprinted out taking advantage of a brief lull in the fight to make for the relative safety of the wall.  One step, two, three and they stumbled and fell, rolling down the hill and catching up against the defenses with an unladylike "Oof".

Reloading finished she turns to continue putting fire into the attackers, recognizing them for members of a local cult who replace every biological component they can with bionics.  A motion out of the left side of her vision shows her Sunki limbering her weapon, an old machine gun she has named "Stubby" into firing position and opening up on anything not lying on the ground.  "Only the two of us, at least twelve of them, maybe we can hold the line long enough for the others to open the emergency exit and escape into the hills." she thinks.  Then there is a roar of flame from the orchard, it engulf the entire enemy left flank, four of them drop in moments and out of the smoke she sees the traders she told to flee emerge.

Though few in number their weapons were just as exotic as their wares and the small furred humanoids fought in a manner that belied their stature.  It was enough to turn the tide, their home would survive another day.

Agreed, this is really great when it lets you get, say, an elk or two in a confined space. And your hunter doesn't even have to haul it cause it's already in the fridge!

It can get dicey sometimes though, like when a megasloth wanders in and all you've got is a couple recurve bows. Or it's the tail end of winter and there's nothing on the map but a warg ^^;;

Yep this is why I will take a quick look at the wildlife tab before I leave the door open, no point in inviting guests you don't want over for dinner.

Stories / The quiet after the storm
April 09, 2019, 04:45:33 PM
Dan wasn't supposed to be in the colony.  But as a point of policy I don't toss wanderers who join out into the teeth of winter and so when she showed up with a decent melee skill just as I was getting a caravan ready to go follow the rumor of an infinite chemreactor I handed her a knife and sent her along.  Well when they arrived to the location where the loot was supposedly stashed I ordered everyone forward without thinking about the possibility of an ambush.  I paid for my hubris.  Ten feral orks spawned and it was way to late to form any sort of firing line and I didnt really have any guns that would do the job at the time anyway.  Dan stood in front of my secondary doctor and main trader (utterly unable to do violence) and the colonies builder who had the only gun worth a damn I had an old lmg.  Dan who wasn't supposed to be there at all stood with only a knife and dispatched 3 of the orks on her own in as many blows.  Her actions allowed another wanderer who was only there for the season to shank one from the flank and Meli the builder gunned down another with a well aimed burst.  Dan was allowed to stay.  Time and again Dan has stood in defense of the colony, with an old choppa she scavenged from one of her first 3 kills.  She has been injured but always recovered fully.

Until today, today a Warpstorm hit as a trader was leaving.  Typically this would be a case of S.E.P as it is somebody elses problem.  But relations with this faction were kind of dicey and so I ordered Dan to make a run for one of theirs who fell as the others scurried off the map.  I thought she would have enough time to make it out and back behind the parapets before the warpspawn chasing the traders could make it back to her.  I had failed to notice a group who had spawned far to the north and were much closer.  She made it to the fallen trader just as they fell on her en mass.  Yet again, Dan stood.  Armed with the same old choppa and a scavenged shotgun she stood over the downed body of a not quite ally not quite enemy, and she held.  Dan all alone felled eight enemies, the first in a single blow the second taking only a moment longer but that second enemy got past her guard and took off her left leg in a moment.  Time and again with only a brief pause between enemies, her back literally to the wall Dan stood and at the end she was the only one standing.

======
As the silence fell Dan slumped back against the earthen berm behind her.  The ground nearby was a lurid slurry of blood, dirt and whatever ichor the warp spawn had pumping through them.  Her gaze fell to her side and the slim form she had been protecting during the attack, the traveler had been with a caravan that left just as the unnatural storm rolled across the previously clear sky.

"Still breathing I see, sorry but I don't think I can carry you back at this point." she said to the silent form as she turned to Hinto her friend of 3 years of survival on this hellhole.  "Can you get them, I am going to try and make it to the hospital?"

With a simple nod Hinto grabbed the unconscious body and ran off leaving Dan to her thoughts.

"Just through the gate, down the tunnel and past the doors right next to the mayors office.  Oh and try not to leave a mess everywhere as you go."

Using her shotgun as a crutch with the silence roaring in her ears Dan turned and began the long walk.

Tribal start with nothing but the clothes your pawns are wearing is a bit rough, particularly in an unforgiving biome as it becomes a race between starvation and that first couple tiles of rice growing.  The fact that you start with pemmican researched does make winter a tad bit less chancy as you can stretch the time before your meat spoils but in any map with animals I always used my winter food storage shed as bait to get whatever wildlife is on the map to come to me.  Just leave the door open and they will walk right into the freezer for you  ;)

General Discussion / Re: Oddity with crafting speed
April 09, 2019, 01:52:44 PM
So after further testing I have noticed two things, first that the issue does not appear to be specific to that pawn as I have seen the same behavior with other pawns and other crafting types (making kibble and construction jobs).  Secondly I was able to confirm that it is taking longer in game when at higher time rates to perform the same tasks by setting up two rows of 1x8 flooring and having the same pawn build both (resources were already delivered, both tests were done underground in 0% light) at 1x speed it took ~16 seconds, and at 3x speed there was minimal difference (the difference was under .1 second) while in game time was harder to measure assuming stable fps as I did not notice any significant hitches it took around a third of an hour for the 1x test and close to half an hour for the 3x test.  I have not tested this against vanilla as frankly restarting the game can take 30 to 40 minutes and I am rather reluctant to spend 1-2 hours waiting for Rimworld to start unless I am unable to find an alternate reason.

General Discussion / Oddity with crafting speed
April 09, 2019, 01:19:37 AM
So I noticed something odd when doing up a large number of items for a caravan request.  It seemed that they were taking a long time to make and after a number of days my pawn had only completed 4 of the required 23 for the caravan.  This led me to time how much real and game time it took to craft each item at different game speeds and I noticed that for some reason the work speed on the item was not in sync with the passing of in game time.  With the game speed at 1x it took ~1 (10 work in 9.4 seconds real time) second per work with the game speed at 3x it took around .7 (10 work in 6.9 seconds real time) second per work.  Timing against the in game clock it took under 2 hours to complete 1 item at 1x speed and took over 2 hours to complete 1 item.  I suspect this is not intended behavior.  My game is heavily modded and I was wondering if anyone had an idea where to look to try and either further confirm this or figure out what is causing it in the first place.
