Hey all, just curious to see what you pick for your starting colonists now that there are more skills which are good to have. I had always looked for mining, growing, social and research, but now I feel I need an artist and a crafter as well in order to improve moods and make good clothes. What do you guys prefer to start with and what do you put on the back burner?

Second, I have found that starting out is harder and you really need to lock in a good food supply quickly. What are your preferences when it comes to build orders? Do you prefer to do coffin bedrooms or just a barracks? I hear barracks can work well if you have enough art, but there is also the sleep disturbance debuff.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on all of this as I feel that a lot was rebalanced in a12 and it would be good to have an update on people's points of view.

Ideas / Dynamic Personalities?

I know this might be very difficult to do, but I'd love to see something that allows colonists to change or develop over time based on the events they have experienced. I think it would add a lot to the game if the characters changed over time because the pawns would grow with their experiences. The crash landed group of chumps would become hardened survivalists and we would becoming increasingly attached to each person and losing one would be a much more emotional loss.

For example, it'd be interesting to see a colonist who was not a cannibal become one over time or a colonist who spends a lot of time in combat eventually become a psychopath. The moodlets could be used as triggers for "personality points," where a person might becoming increasingly resistant to a moodlet and develop a new trait. My only problem with this system is that weak pawns would naturally get stronger over time and many flaws may disappear with time. I'm not sure how to resolve that part other than some pawns may not get used to something or could develop PTSD through getting an abrasive or pessimistic trait.

Not sure if it makes sense to everyone, but that's something I would like to see. What do you guys think?

General Discussion / What's on the menu tonight?

If you're like me, your colonists eat their weight in potatoes, supplemented by random meat from animals. That said, I'm curious as to how you all feed your colonists in the new alpha.

-What biome are you in and what's the growing season?
-What's the lion share of the diet? If growing, what do you grow and how do you decide what to grow?
-Do you grow inside or outside? If inside, are you using hydroponics or fertilizer pumps to make rich soil? (I had never thought about until I saw it in a video, does anyone like doing this?)
-Do you use mods? I see some mods which add the option for "soylent green" or the like. I'm curious if anyone is RP'ing an evil colony of cannibals.

Personally, I'm in a tundra biome and I have a growing season from June to July. Not a lot to work with. I am looking to move inside, but not sure if I want to do hydroponics or just make a greenhouse with rich soil. I have always done hydroponics, but with recent nerfs to growing at night, I'm not sure if it's still the best option. Does anyone know how much faster hydroponics is compared to rich soil? I've heard that strawberries do better in rich soil than potatoes and I'm considering fertilizer pumps for the first time.

Thanks,
Draxis
