General Discussion / Weird colony
August 31, 2015, 09:06:46 PM
Seriously I have had the oddest colony I can think of. I have one guy who will "forget" to sleep because he was eating (he lost his stomach in a firefight).

Another who has twice tried to commit suicide with a minigun and failed.

And I've found Captain america under the alias Steven Wilcox in a pirate vessel (how he got there I have no idea but I'm going to assume The Red Skull was somehow involved).

Also had a couple mechinoids spawn in an undiscovered area decide to attack me out of the blue.

Anyone else have some funny, crazy, or just plain weird things happen in a plalythrough?

Ideas / Birds of Prey

My apologies if this has been suggested (and dismissed) before . I did check the new frequent suggestions post but didn't see it there.

Not sure exactly what constitutes a cheap idea but I'd like to suggest that Falconry be implemented.  Falcons would be a very fast deadly weapon that a hunter could use to kill small small beasties like squirrels and boomrats. Ideally the bird would then bring the prey back to the hunter who'd then take it home. Falcons might need to be fed raw meat and live in cages in a climate controlled mews.  Most of the details of this sound like a mod but I'm guessing that some of the game mechanics would require a tweak as well.

Along similar lines, a predator drone might make a great weapon. It would be very fast at getting to targets but have very limited firepower and then require a return to home to recharge/refuel.  This sounds a LOT more like the type of weaponry space travelers would have at their disposal rather than all the shotguns and so forth.  Ideally these could be crafted by the colonists after sufficient research was done. I'm guessing that plasteel and/or Uranium might be required in their construction.  There has been much discussion about alternatives to kill-boxing... this might be the start of an alternative.

I saw the above quote in the cheap idea thread and thought that it would a rather neat idea, though far from cheap. The main thing I liked about it was the falconry part as it would help with those pesky boomrats and squirrels. I know this kind of falls under taming wild animals and such but most people who think of that idea do tend to lean towards the whole idea of using Muffalo like Oxen or horses. They seem to have covered most of what might be needed in their statement on that.

Now on to the second part of it with the predator drones. We have a fighter pilot as a possible background so the idea can be supported in some way but I don't like the idea of it being reusable that and runways aren't usually in a survival kit or feasible on smaller maps.

I would propose something similar to a mortar shell that can is launched out of one of the mortars we have that would then loiter over a target area. It would be more accurate than the normal mortar, being that it's somewhat controlled, but much more expensive. The idea of uranium in it's manufacture isn't a bad one though gold would probably be more reasonable with it's use in computers and give it, the gold, slightly more use than as a sculpting ingredient.

The drone could have slightly different properties depending on what type of mortar it was launched from. An EMP mortar could have it act as a jammer, disabling Mechanoids and High tech weaponry. An incendiary mortar could have it drop the equivalent to napalm as it circles. And the normal mortar could have it drop a small cluster of grenades as it falls

Or there is the other idea of it being thrown into the air like a paper airplane with only the loiter and otherwise working like a grenade. I kind of like this idea better for balance and that it seems to be more inline with the whole idea of "launching" a bird of prey off your wrist.

Thoughts?

Ideas / A change for hunting.
February 22, 2015, 03:08:22 PM
I put this in the cheap ideas thread and it was suggested by someone else to make an entire thread about it so I am.

I've noticed my hunter(s) that use ranged weapons tend to take shots a maximum range which is translating to 1 and 2 percent shots after all factors, my question is what hunter would take a shot that they, under perfect conditions, would only have a 6 percent chance to hit? So Tynan if you could be so kind as to put a lower restriction on shooters base chance to hit at around 30 or so before other factors such as range, weather, etc. while hunting so they aren't "wasting" shots.

Bugs / [W| 0.0.254b] Can't walk over food
November 10, 2013, 01:27:45 AM
I will unmark feeding prisoners as well as warden and doctor yet my colonists still try to feed them and get stuck with food or nutrient paste in almost every movable spot they can get to.
