Stories / Vault 213
July 22, 2015, 04:51:33 PM
So, recently I had decided to try a completely underground (Well, in a mountain...) colony, as the hype for fallout 4 overtook me. I had started with three named colonists, Butch, Amata, and "Overseer."

After several months of construction, and survival of many raids, the Vault was looking prosperous. Entirely self-sufficient, with turrets placed throughout the inner hallways, I had thought it impenetrable.

At this point, we only had six colonists, with the three new ones being utterly useless. Or so i thought. With so few numbers and progress not really going anywhere, I decided to expand the vault, while changing the storyteller to Randy Random. Oh what a mistake...

Work had just begun on a new wing, and everyone was off mining in the depths of the vault, when the mechanoid hive attacked. Three centipedes landed right outside the door, I was ill-equipped to fight them, with only small arms and two suits of power armor between the whole colony.

Everyone, except 'Philip,' my combat-ineffective smooth-talker that wielded only a pistol, stacked up outside the door, having no time to reach the outer defenses. We were left with five men and one turret, behind a single sandbag wall. Seconds after everyone opens fire, a grenade lands in the center of the group, killing one of the newcomers instantly, and lighting everyone else on fire. The four survivors scatter and abandon their cover, the Overseer struck down by a crack shot from the centipede, while the other two, butch and amata, fall unconscious from the burns.  My last defender is frantically trying to put the flames out inbetween taking pot-shots at the centipedes, but he isn't well armed, i know that without butch and amata, the vault will fall.

Then, I order philip on a suicide mission. He has to rescue the two unconscious colonists, or at least grab their weapons. With the newcomer's cover, he surprisingly manages to get out of the vault, dodge all the shots, and rescue them BOTH. With the other survivor quickly killed by a torrent of laser fire, Philip is the last conscious survivor of the vault.

He begins his long wait. Stood outside the medbay, in the depths of the vault, pistol ready to defend against the centipedes, if they don't decide to go away. But the centipedes are smart. Instead of bashing their way to him through the turrets and doors, they turn around and destroy the solar panels. The lights flicker out one by one, and philip is left alone in the darkness. But not all is lost! As the centipedes bash down the heavy steel door that seals the vault, a band of tribals attack.

Lots of tribals.

They make short work of the centipedes, taking heavy casualties in the process but not giving up. They then enter the vault and start ransacking everything, lighting fires and destroying furniture. Philip still lies in wait, as the tribals get closer and closer to the medbay. He's still outnumbered 15 to 1. But, as they break into the hallway and philip starts shooting, butch miraculously wakes up! Only, upon entering the corridor, to be knocked out straight away from a spear. Philip turns and attempts to rescue butch again, but he too is struck down by another spear, and the two lie unconscious in the hall.

But surprisingly, the tribals have other ideas. They approach the two, and kidnap philip. Taking him away with them and stopping the assault, presumably selling him into slavery. As silence fills the halls, and fire rages in the dorms and the farms, butch and amata are the only two left, both still unconscious.

After around half a day, the two wake up to the devastation, immediately attempting to quell the flames. Butch suffers a mental break, wandering aimlessly as Amata tries to stop the blaze from spreading. But it's too much, in a fit of psychotic rage, she attacks butch. I'm powerless to help or stop anyone, as butch turns to face amata, and in one solid punch, fractures her spine. The cold-hearted bastard just leaves her there, for a whole day, as he continues to wander in a broken state. Eventually, Amata succumbs to her wounds, and butch walks out into the wastes, later dying of starvation in a nearby field.

So, as it turns out, Philip is the only survivor of the massacre of Vault 213, unfortunately held captive in a camp or sold to a slaving ring. But his bravery will never be forgotten, and at least he was spared the same cruel end that befell the others.
