Ideas / Campfire
February 06, 2015, 12:08:31 AM
I'm going to assume this has been said before, but just in case shouldn't our colonists be able to cook some food over a campfire?  That would really add to my ability to role play with these guys.  Now obviously there should be some motivation to build a stove at some point, but having to get right on that seems unrealistic to me.  The fire should be able to cook up only small animals and produce, the meals have a slight effect on mood based on backstory and traits, either a positive or negative mood effect for the rustic quality of the meal.  The food however isn't really as satisfying to the hunger and nutrition and you can't make foods which raise mood very well like birthday cake.

Just saying, yes we need campfire cookouts and ghost stories but at some point we also still need that stove for cake.

Ideas / Meandering animals
February 04, 2015, 11:23:40 PM
I don't know if this is true, I haven't been playing long enough, but I read on reddit about how the current game mechanic counts just total animal number on map, maybe also how much food in meat is on the map, with a cap to how much is on there.  Now apparently what this means is that if you zoom out and only pick off what you can see then your map gets filled with small game and once the cap is hit you don't get any more large animals until you thin the numbers.  Are we OK with this or should the animal behavior be altered to better reflect what happens in nature?  Some animals that set up home base and others that wander around?

Also, I'm just going to take this moment to express just how much I want to see Meerkats in here, with their burrows.

Ideas / What is plasteel anyway?
February 04, 2015, 10:50:09 PM
So this is a game about the realism, yes?  That is why no aliens and limb/organ damage and things of that nature?  So how come I can mine plasteel out of ore veins in a mountain?  That seems FUBAR to me.  Also steel, if we can't find natural steel here on terra firma then it probably isn't a thing.  So for steel we should need to smelt it from iron ingots using wood for fuel.  The use of coal should generate stronger steel, also the skill of the person.  Just look at how they make a Katana, the authentic ones made in Japan, they make the steel in a clay hand built kiln, then sort it by quality by hand, the unsuitable stuff is used for kitchen products with just the good stuff being used to make the blade.  Now I'm down with plasteel being present, but it should only come from trade or things from our busted ship raining down on us.

Ideas / Hey these Iguanas aren't whip it!
February 04, 2015, 09:40:49 PM
Hey all, I just registered an account here because Mr. Sylvester indicated I would get better feedback and response this way versus emailing him, so I'm just going to copy/paste the whole thing in here and see what you all think, I hope that's OK.  If anyone has some thoughts on a better forum category to post this under or thinks this needs to be broken up into multiple posts at some point please let me know, it is rather a bit much.

Dear Mr., nah too formal.  Ahem.  Hey man this is a great game you are making here, really love where this is going and it's not even ready yet for you to put out on Steam, hope they don't blow a gasket over there waiting for it, see what I did there LOL.  I do have a couple things to say though by way of suggestions.

First up, that iguana is really tweaking my autistic nerve, they do not use claw attacks.  Yes they have claws, yes they are sharp, yes I have scars, no they were not from an attack, just for climbing.  It's the tail you have to watch out for, as much as four or six feet long and capable of knocking dingos unconscious by beating them upside the head.  You can also get some serious slashing damage maybe if the serrated top part catches you, but I would like to see the damage from iguana changed to, oh lets say 60% chance of blunt damage and 40% chance for slashing damage, all of course depending on your armor etc.  Also the iguana should pretty much exclusively damage the legs and torso, unless these are intended to be larger modified iguanas that have the reach for bopping you on the head.

It was actually pretty funny seeing the pecking order in our house among the pets, we had a four foot iguana, twelve pound cat and seventy five pound dog.  That cat would mercilessly go after the dog for just no reason, and despite being a Doberman he was a total pussy and would do backflips trying to get away from the cat.  But as soon as the iguana came out they both went on alert.

Second thing, in looking at this game, just how things look for the textures and colors, I'm sort of reminded of the labels used for most products I've seen made from Hemp.  Also the kind of people who would be drawn to this game, might be shooting blanks here but it seems to me like they would include the survival wilderness hemp crowd.  I'm just saying, you know, it can grow a foot or two per day without even being genetically modified, so it seems like a useful plant to bring along for establishing new worlds.  It would be great to use for making some traps as well, both for hunting and defending, but you could offset that by making some nasty critters for us to match wits with.

Third thing, can we has drugs please?  You already have cannibalism, psychotics and slave trading organ harvesters, so you might as well round that out with some drugs and associated mental traits.  It might be really cool if you had some rare drug that was able to give your colonists temporary ability to affect the minds of your enemies.  But you have to take the drug regularly over an extended period to build up the ability, it doesn't last very long and has some harsh repercussions on the mental stability of the user plus random stuff with surrounding colonists.

Fourth thing, NPC followers that can have zero orders given to them.  I'm thinking modified animals that can be tamed using a specific and rare Handler skill and that are really only good for helping with hunting and for defending their handler against melee attackers.  Also androids that glitch out during solar flares and are only good for combat against mechs as their programming prohibits harm to any organic, plus maybe give them some sensors that do things, let them show you buried ore veins or extract hidden resource caches or something.

Fifth thing, nanotech, this is 3,500 years in the future, there should be some pretty advanced nanotech out there.  Especially bio-nanotech, I just read in this months Popular Science about bacteria that can live on electricity and breath metal, our scientists have some interesting plans for these little guys and they live all around us, we are just only noticing them now.  Also I know you stated there are no true aliens in your world, but what about lab accidents?  Look up Ichell http://phys.org/news/2011-09-scientists-inorganic-life.html these things that far in the future could have been made into pretty much anything.

Sixth thing, will there ever be any land vehicles?  I know it's not really needed for such a small closed in game area but it could add some extra flavor, or even just some animal you can armor up and ride.

Seventh thing.  OK, so I have this crazy/brilliant idea.  What if the game included multiplayer in a new way.  What if you could create a raiding party and send them out, but it takes awhile for them to return and the player you raid with them has to defend when they are attacked by your people as one of the events?  Now obviously this could only work for people using the same world seed, but that's easy enough right?  Or you could also have the game switch over to the region you are raiding and let you control the action, but that would be trickier to set up.

Eighth thing, unless you are in a desert we have water, should we be expecting fishing to become a thing, perhaps with some water hazards like drowning and Lochness monsters or whatever?

Even if you don't take any of these suggestions I am really looking forward to seeing what you do next with this.  Except for the iguana, that seriously needs to change, I don't mean to be a dick here but that shit is really bugging me.  Just one last little thing, I assume with a game like this that your personal version that you enjoy playing will be a bit different from what is released to the public, it would be pretty cool if at some point you somehow make that available, sort of a "director's cut" type of thing.

This last part is just for the sake of having the whole complete email in here, his response to me.

Thank you for the ideas. That's quite a screenful. You should know I'll generally respond more if you post this sort of thing on the forums, so others can see my responses as well and contribute.

Best
