Stories / The Fall of Yel
January 18, 2015, 03:04:05 PM
A while back I decided I'd write up a story based on a modded world because I had a lot of spare time at the airport (about 12 hours) before my transfer to the other plane. However, I never got to it cause I knocked out. But as fate has it, my literature teacher assigned us to write the beginning of a story and what I have here is that assignment.

Now, I'm going to make a sort of backstory that says more about the planet and some things mentioned in the first installment of what may become a serial so I'm not going in blind and you guys have a sort of a sense of where i wanna go. Might try using some peoples names on the forum.

P.S. I apologize in advance for how I made Bastet's Scottish accent show. I really want people to imagine that they're hearing a Scottish person but if its just plain ol' english it sorta works against it. So i guess what im trying to say i apologize for how i tried to make it a bit more immersive but if necessary i can change it.

Year 150
“Cardenaglo mate! You need to get the bloody ‘ell up, the Magister is calling for you!” Called out a loud booming from the door. “What for?” remarked a worn out Cardenaglo still tired from Randy’s random late night training the night before. “Your mission” and with those two words he got up with his remaining energy. It was the mission he had been waiting for in order to graduate the academy. He changed into his clean marine fatigues and walked out the door into the long white halls of The Academy.
The Academy held some of the brightest minds on the planet, and sometimes even off. You could find men and women from different backgrounds and different planets coming to learn and teach here. The school even drew the attention of some ex-commandos from the glitter tech planet Keroba who decided to stay and teach. The Academy’s also wasn't only a school. It was at the  very beginning the original colony of the first people. Amongst the first 20 years those people remade the colony out of titanium, an extremely expensive endeavor but one well worth it. The Academy is also the planet’s most well protected structure, making it the one location everyone heads to when someone dares attempt to raid the city.
Making his way down the white halls he finally came to the room where he was supposed to receive his mission to go from cadet to marine. The room he was called into was brightly lit and there was a dark table at the center that contrasted with the walls and a screen on the other side of it. On one end sat an old man with many titanium prosthetics complimenting his white hair. He had lost many of his body parts to battles against different factions both terran and extraterrestrial trying to gain control of the planet. He was the tenth Magister militum and the one that had lasted the longest. This man was Magister militum Sylvester the III.
“Sit down cadet. I have a mission for a small squad from the top of your class,” He said in a calm low tone. However, this tone was not one he had used often, it was, in fact, a tone he would use in situations he did not find favorable. He took out a folder and placed it on the table as Cardenaglo sat down, “This folder contains all the information I know and will tell you. This will be the same information you share with the squad of your choosing,” he held his shining hand over the folder before sliding it across the table. Cardenaglo looked through the folder and noticed the pictures of the Tao outpost. “The Tao outpost, as you know, is one of our newest additions. It houses the largest power plant’s on the planet. However your mission is not about Tao outpost, we already sent Omega Squad for its protection, but a nearby mountain that holds a bunker. The engineers managed to make explosives strong enough to break through the beta poly material the blast doors and outer walls are made of. We need a team to go in and bring back a field report of what is there. Simple enough for you?” He asked looking at Cardenaglo who was still looking through the files.
“Seems easy enough, and I may take whomever i please, you said?”
“Thats correct”“I’ll need to look at the rest of the class then”
Cardenaglo got up and walked to the door, “Before you go, be careful in there. We don't know what you might find. And once you’re in there remember, shoot first, ask questions later,” said Magister militum Sylvester before Cardenaglo left to his room.
Cardenaglo had to look at his class with great care. He had ten spots and with these ten he would graduate. He could take his friends with him, but what if it turned out to be a dangerous mission? He didn’t want to be reliable for their lives. He could take heavy weapons experts but in an ambush that doesn't seem very strategic. What if the pirates decided to snipe at them, what then? Just sit there to die? These were all real possibilities he had to take into consideration seeing as the Tao outpost was still attacked by the occasional raiders and offworlders.
Cardenaglo sat there in his room for a few hours pondering on what was a strategically safe group. However he finally came to the conclusion that he needed a small squad of four who wouldn't shy from battle and together would pose as a versatile opponent for even the most advanced mechs or commandos and he knew exactly who he wanted. He’d take Bastet, a young ex-criminal who grew up on an urb world before being exiled to live on the outer worlds, she is also great in close combat when she has the upper hand and that’s just about always; Dai, a burly young man that can carry his weight and that of two others, he was born a farmhand but managed to enter The Academy due to his knack for explosives and traps; Woulf, a lean young man cloned from an ex-commando known for his strict attitude and proficiency with energy-related weapons and also a close friend of Cardenaglo; and Snow, the academy’s top of the top and second to none except the Magister militum himself, however no one has neither managed to see Snow’s face as it is hidden at all times nor find anything about her. As the evening progressed he contacted these hand picked individuals and asked them to join him on the mission. All of them said yes except for Snow who simply walked away from Cardenaglo upon him saying “would”.
The four- Cardenaglo, Bastet, Dai, and Woulf- met at the barracks where they would supply themselves with basic gear and the needed explosives to breach the walls of the bunker. “So Card, what exactly are we looking for,” asked Woulf as he followed Cardenaglo to the barracks. “Not quite sure, we’re suppose to survey the bunker-” he stopped at the entrance of the barracks, “well, well seems like you're ready” he said to the fully geared Snow who was packing a medical bag with bandages and medkits. Upon their entrance Snow simply looked at them and fixed the sniper strapped over her shoulder. Cardenaglo gazed at her then continued to order everyone to gear up based on the expectation that this could potentially be a high-risk mission. As they geared up, one could hear metal tapping on the floor outside the door, as the door opened the Magister Militum walked in, “Children I’m going to need a field report on Tao outpost once you arrive, we seem to have lost communication with them and I’d be grateful if you messaged back that all was well” he said as he watched over them.
“It was probably a boom rat biting through the mechanical wiring, sir” said Dai as he loaded his browning after having loaded the heavy explosives to breach the beta poly.
“While that is most likely what happened I still want a report, are we understood?” He said as he continued to look for them
A “yessir” was heard in unison from the cadets, except for one.
“Good, now I’ll leave you to it. Better start heading out so you can arrive before nightfall.” Said the magister as he walked out and the metal hitting floor began again.
“Well fuck, now we got more work to do” Said Woulf as he took his gear and strapped it over his shoulder.
“Its jist a radio message frae somewhaur we ur awreddy gonnae be at.” said Bastet with her scottish accent from her home planet.
“She’s right you know? We HAVE to pass through, besides we’ll need to sleep before going in, I don't want anyone to be useless in the battlefield because they need to sleep. Remember what happened to Roberto?” Said Cardenaglo who began to walk out the door, followed by the others and finally by Snow.
Upon exiting to the garage Cardenaglo went to the nearby A.T.V. (Assault Transport Vehicle) that was newly designed by the engineers. “We’ll be taking this to the outpost and leaving it with the Omega Squad who is currently in charge of guarding the outpost,” Cardenaglo said as he packed his bag into the back of the large, red, armor plated vehicle, “Should cut down about 58 hours of travelling on foot to only six” as he climbed into the driving seat and the others finished packing their bags in the trunk. “Whit dae ye hink we will fin inside th' place?” asked Bastet as she entered the truck followed by Dai “Probably something for the eggheads up top to research” he said. “Doesn't matter,” and with that Cardenaglo started the truck and began driving towards the Tao outpost through the cold treacherous lands of Yel.
