Off-Topic / Good fictional podcasts.
May 12, 2018, 07:12:42 PM
I'm looking for some good fictional podcasts like Ars Paradoxica and Wolf 359. If anyone else has any good ones they could let me know about, I'd love to know! Thank you for your time.

Please only vote if you have a European car and live in the United States. You could also take a slightly more in-depth poll here : https://goo.gl/forms/HDKqFMQpMJS3RCKp1

I know the maths more than I know the technicality of getting started with everything. Dividends? Hedge? Also, generally what (reasonably priced) stocks or general fields are more safe than average and what should I stay away from?

I remember in A15 using beer to get nearly all the items from a traders during colder times of the year. Is this exploit still possible to both perform and have happen to you if you take your muffalos to another base for trade? Thank you for your time.

Bugs / [A17.1539] Fractal-like world map.
May 17, 2017, 06:08:26 PM

World map looks similar to a fractal. Just previous I was returning from an item stash and launching pods with colonists and cargo.
I was able to snap some photos and was in the process of opening up console to get the error code(s) and the game crashed.
The error was something like 'six could not be reserved' where six was the name of the pawn loading into the pod.
Crash.dmp was 0 bytes also.
I know I need to activate windows

I'm in a playthrough with the outside temperature being around -150c (climate cycle and cold snaps during winter) and the inside temp is fluctuating from 4c to 15c within a second or so and then going back. Are there any mods or changes that could be reasonably be made to add a sort of delay lag to the temperature to keep the number from jumping around so much?

Note - I don't have all my heaters set to the same temperature so it steps the power (and hopefully the pushed heat)

Seriously, this is great.
(Sorry if you mods think this is in the wrong section, I couldn't think of a more appropriate section.)

The "A fire Upon the Deep" book series (especially #2 in the series, A Deepness In the Sky) shares much of the following lore with Rimworld,

  • Slower than light speed (few exceptions)
  • The main characters get stranded and have to start over in technology
  • A major protagonist is an AI
  • Cryostasis
  • Main goal is to escape the planet
  • Transcendents (called 'powers' in the books)
  • A distinction between rimworlds and Glitterworlds (core worlds in the book)
  • Marbles/Planets completely destroyed by conflict
  • Planets are very secluded

But now the few things different from Rimworld

  • (a few) aliens
  • Distinct Galaxy zones

Here are some depictions in the book with a bit of text explaining them.

The milky way is split up into these different zones. Some unexplained limitations prevent high-level intelligence in the 'unthinking depths', with human-level intelligence in the 'slow zone' and the ability for super-human intelligence (complex AI) in the 'beyond.

A blimp in the third book.

It's a good book series if you haven't already read it. You can read a bit of the first book for free (and legally) under the 'open preview tab' here : http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/77711.A_Fire_Upon_the_Deep

So... A few months ago I read a short post describing the efficient ways to make walls in Rimworld with information like 'corners don't matter' and '2 thick walls are the best' so I decided to make this post to re-evaluate the information.

Preface - All measurements were taken with an external temperature of -270 c , wall material is irrelevant, and each room started at 2000 c at the same time.

(Graph is Temp (in c) by Time (in-game ticks)
Conclusion : Corners do not in fact matter, doors impact insulation greatly, and double walls do indeed help quite a bit.

Tests were done with a constructed roof. Having a mountain overhead seems to be more effective, but needs to be tested more.

Off-Topic / How to get gud at writing music (?)
August 28, 2016, 01:33:17 PM
I'm an intermediate pianist with moderate experience on reed organs, pipe organs,a bit of guitar, and accordions. I've written around 10 or so songs at this point but I can NEVER write a good ending to a piece. Here's my latest piece : ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/daivufb5jlfqdtd/NewSong.wav?dl=0 ). Does anyone know of a good way to end this piece? Actually, any music-related help would be appreciated at all. I'd really love to become a more rounded writer.

Help / Preventing audio from being stolen.

I'm considering releasing a mod that adds more music to Rimworld, but I would like the files to be like the ones in the core game - or to say, hidden/inaccessible.

I believe that it would be beneficial to the community if there was some value that would be difficult to find that could show if the development mode had been used. An example of how it could be tried to be hidden is to use the seed as a base, though I don't know how it could be assigned to the save without being fairly obvious.
Thankyou for your time.

I'm looking for the location to where steam downloads rimworld mods to. Currently I'm having issues with the workshop items being stuck as 'downloading...' even after re-starting the game 3 times.

Not sure if this is in the correct category (I didn't know whether to put it here, under Mods/help or under support).
Thank you for your time in advance.

General Discussion / Don't be jerks on Steam.
July 15, 2016, 09:48:19 PM
Seriously guys, at least try to represent our little community with more insightful comments than stuff like 'Dumbass', 'you have brain damage', or even
'go [redacted] kill yourself [redacted1] [redacted2] [redacted3] [redacted3] [redacted4] [redacted2] [redacted1] [redacted5] [redacted4] [redacted1] [redacted3] [redacted2] [redacted3] [redacted1] me [redacted3] [redacted2] [redacted4] [redacted2] [redacted4] [redacted4] [redacted3] [redacted3] [redacted1] you [redacted3] [redacted5] [redacted3] bloody [redacted5] [redacted1] you suck my [redacted6] [redacted7] [redacted2]'

I mean... come on... that insult isn't even unique or meaningfull...

I believe that having an option for a slowly increasing or decreasing temperature over time would be quite fun. For example, you could emulate your planet slowly drifting away from it's host star, the temperature decreasing by a few degrees per season. If possible, this could be part of the new scenario system. I think this would be preferable to having the ColdSnap trigger at shortening intervals.

General Discussion / No uranium in trade ships.
April 29, 2016, 07:33:20 PM
Only once in my 180 day old colony have I come across a trade ship with uranium ( A bulk goods one if I remember correctly ). Is this just bad luck or is it really that uncommon?

General Discussion / A dog with no jaw (can't eat)
April 23, 2016, 11:57:47 AM
Unless there is a mod or some feature that I don't know about, my doggy will die.
Does anyone know of how I can save my dog? It wouldn't even give the option to feed the dog "manually".

Off-Topic / Good Low-Resolution Games?
December 26, 2015, 09:15:42 PM
I'm going to be in a car for around 14 hours in a few days, and I just so happen to have an old 360p monitor... What games should I buy before the break? Any games that are split screen or such are preferable too !

I'm trying a new form of editing with cutting to the more interesting / informational parts . Any feedback is good ( negative feedback is better !).
