If a solar flare is intense enough to shut down all power, then it's also intense enough to cause circuit overloading in the form of random voltage spikes.

I suggest that a solar flare also be an enhanced Zzzzt event. When it hits, your batteries will discharge and a number of devices will overload, explode or become damaged and require repair. If you have long, straight power conduit runs, they would resonate with the field impulse and cause additional damage.

Ideas / Configurable tooltip delay
July 07, 2018, 09:39:05 AM
Let us configure the tooltip delay.

I suggest a slider with a minimum of 0ms and a maximum of 1000ms, with 100ms increments. Or possibly 50ms or even pixel increments, as below.

I prefer no tooltip delay (instant).

As it is, the unconfigurable default's slight delay means it's impossible to use the snipping tool to take snips of the game window with tooltips included, as the delay before snip selection begins is shorter than the tooltip delay.

Edit: And, for an example of how a different game (Factorio) does it: (0-500ms, pixel increments)

Ideas / [Forum] Allow quoting selected text
July 02, 2018, 04:07:57 PM
Mods, not sure if this is the right subforum for this or not, but I'm not seeing a better one.

How hard would it be to add this feature to the forums? Some other forums that I use allow one to select text from a post and a thing will pop-up with 'quote selected text'. This feature would save a lot of time and effort, as otherwise, one must quote the entire post and then manually pare it down to what one wants to quote, multiple times if one wants to address different parts of the same post.

Here's an example of how this works on Klei's forums, for Oxygen Not Included.

I read this on a different forum. It was a post from August 2016. Is it still accurate? It's the primary reason that I've always played Randy Rough and nothing else.

Please don't play Cassandra people.

Here's how the storytellers work.

There are 10ish "bins" full of events to pull from. Each bin has harder and harder events/different stuff going on in them. So like bin 1 might have stuff like "Single Raider attack!", while bin 7 will be like poison ships/toxic fallout and whatnot.

Outside of those toy bins, you also have the Raid button, which is tied to the tiered bins.

Cassandra and Phoebe work the exact same way. Every month they will send you a raid, no matter what position you are in, because they don't actually look at your colony, they are hardcoded to send you a raid. After every raid they jump up a bin tier, which also increases the size of the next raid. In between raids, they will pull out an event from their bins, and use it against you. The only difference between Cassandra and Phoebe is the timing of the events, Cassandra pulls out two events a month outside of raids, Phoebe only pulls out one, which means you get more time in between Phoebe's events.

This isn't a great system, and it's outright designed for you to eventually lose. Due to how this plays out, it means you will eventually hit a point where Cassandra and Phoebe are sending massive 20+ people raids at you constantly, and in between are dropping Poison Ships/Mech invasions left and right, because it's the only tools they have at their disposal. If you can survive all that, you get to the last two bins, which are literally just "50+ person raids.". This is what people talk about when they say the game requires killboxes.

Randy doesn't do any of that, and is the best storyteller because of it. Randy is not hardcoded to send raids, which means he'll only send a raid if he feels like it'd be fun. He actually is coded to check your base and see what'd be the most interesting way to mess with it is, which gives you a lot of more personal events to deal with. He can pull from any bin at any time, which means even in the endgame you'll still be getting small scale raids, or manhunter packs, etc etc. What he does to keep this interesting is if he's pulling from bin 3 during the lategame, he'll allow himself to also pull from other low bins to give you multiple events at once, which makes the combined events more dangerous then they would have been.

Randy is significantly more enjoyable/Dwarf Fortressy/playable then Cassandra and Phoebe in their current state. Unless you really enjoy the idea of nonstop raids/forced killboxes as part of your DFlike I guess. He is not the "hard" option at all, he's the random events option.

Of course this could mean you start the game and get a 5-6 person raid with sniper rifles involved as your 1st/2nd raid, because he pulled from a higher level bin, but that's part of the fun!

Ideas / Don't change the untranslated names
June 26, 2018, 01:00:50 AM
I noticed that the difficulty names got changed in the latest 1.0 preview.
From

To

And Glitterworld got changed to Ultratech or something similar.

Was this for localization reasons? Even if it was, there's no reason to change the untranslated versions.. they're fun and unique and should stay as they were.

Bugs / [1.0.1942] Memory leak detected
June 22, 2018, 12:38:37 PM
Getting this error randomly in the debug log.

Memory leak detected: map (Map-0) is still live when it shouldn't be, this map will not be mentioned again

Please see these images for details. In #1, I have ordered a pawn to move to the selected tile. In #2, you can see the pawn taking a roundabout way and only pathing through the construction at the closest approach.

And then in #3, a larger version, with pawns supplying resources to a construction. Note the exceedingly time wasting path the supplier is taking to get more resources.

The new un/forbid tool is a nice addition. Would it be possible to let it affect construction ghosts as well? I like doing extensive planning of my starting base before beginning construction, and it's a bit painful to manually forbid every single ghost that I don't want constructed yet. I know about doubleclick to select a group but it's still limited and indiscriminate.
