Hmm, I'll have to do some testing on my own then to see how it goes. If I can survive a game for any amount of time.

Do carpets and Smooth Stone stack to increase happiness levels?

I do 3 wide tunnels normally, and 2 wide on occasion. Both seem to work fine.

I've started leaning towards doing barracks style prisoner cells, with multiple beds next to eachother.

What size rooms do you use? I tend to find that colonists aren't happy unless they have a 6x6 room, so that's what I've been digging them inside the mountain. I see a lot of people give them 2x2 or 2x3 rooms, but if I do that I always get "cramped environment" as a negative happiness. I prefer the look of bigger rooms, with prisoner shacks located outside or in cramped quarters, but I am not sure if that's a smart move. I just played on the new, easier Casandra version (can't remember the name) and made it past 2 raids before the 3rd one blew up a turret with 3 of my guys running by it, so I haven't gotten very far.

@Dragula: Why would you ever need that much power before you could refill the bateries? Also, don't your colonists say that their rooms are cramped?

I did get the idea from Dwarf Fortress, but all my dwarves always died way before a noble even had my fortress pop up on the "Avoid this area" list.  That game's controls are way to hard to master.

I support this idea, and the trinkets and such other enemies can hoarde.

I think it'd be pretty neat if your Nobles could demand a bigger living area with more amenities to decorate their section with.

I haven't been able to dig any massive bases yet, as college, work, and other real life duties have kept me busy enough to only be able to play a few games.

I was actually thinking of the other way around, allowing research to improve the output of geothermal plants by 10/20/30%. While it does provide a fair amount of power, they can be hard to get to, hard to use, and they are limited to 2 per map, or so I seem to find.

Use mountains as walls. I could construct a U shaped building with the top attaching to a mountain and it count as an indoor location.

That already is in the game, it will take the mountain wall as the fourth wall of the building, unless you made it too large, then the roofing will collapse and create rubble.
I tried to do a 3x3 building for prisoners using two sides as a mountain and it said I didn't have a walled in prisoner bed. I then tried using one side as a mountain and I received the same issue.

I like this idea, if it can also cause bad issues. I've seen military members get "Dear John" letters where their girl/boyfriend or significant other breaks up with them while they're deployed. I can imagine something like that or a "Your ______ has died of disentery" letters.

I haven't read the previous 20 pages, but here are my suggestions;

Be able to carry rocks from a dumping area into a location, then smooth it down in order to make smooth stone floorings.

Shooting range - Build it far away from residential areas or else noise complaints will be filed, but allow members to increase their shooting abilitiy

Use mountains as walls. I could construct a U shaped building with the top attaching to a mountain and it count as an indoor location.
