Ideas / Ye 'ole UI and Raider spawns
October 03, 2014, 05:10:06 PM
I was playing the recent alpha last night and I noticed that while the UI surrounding health and health related operations is really finicky and a bit too clunky it seems. Why can't a colonist exclusively use their bed for general injuries? I know there's a hospital bed upgrade, but it just feels to finicky to me. Not only that I had a colonist with a "left foot little toe shot off" while at the same time being immobile. For about 2-4 minutes of messing around with trying to get this treated I finally noticed an almost invisible greyed out text stating "missing right leg". It was so obvious when I saw it, but it was completely overshadowed by the yellow "left foot little toe shot off" health message. After that debacle I slapped a pegleg on that poor sap and moved on.

One other thing that was rather irritating was I had a 10-15 man tribal raid spawn almost inside my base. Now I've poked around the wiki and apparently there's a random event wherein pirates drop right on top of your base, but that wasn't the case here at all. See I built my base at a map corner pretty much right on the edge of buildable space because it held 2 steam vents and the largest cluster of minerals for mining (I'm in a mostly field like place with very little mineable areas). So that was rather surprising, they immediately started wrecking my everything, but sadly they weren't too smart and let my other colonist take pot shots at them while they fruitlessly attacked one turret that I kept repairing. Well that's a thing I hope doesn't have to happen in the future.

On that note it would be nice to be able to order colonists to repair something while drafted. It shouldn't be to hard right? It's just to fiddly to un-draft one, tell him to repair a turret or a wall then re-draft him to keep him from wandering into the line of fire.

Also watching my brawler get executed by an enemy in hand to hand combat while carrying a spear is disheartening to say the least. The enemy beat her over her head with his M-24, while her polearm just didn't cut it. After she died I checked the raiders stats, only a 1-2 point difference in melee. Oh well that's what I get for playing into the whims of someone who gets "unhappy" while holding a gun. And not dying.

I do want to end this saying I'm loving the new Alpha overall. I haven't played since about Alpha 1 or 2 and it feels almost like a completely different game. I'm very excited for the future of this game. Oh and the music is great. Definitely gives me the frontier vibe, and is very soothing.

I second the OP, it's all to easy to bait the A.I. into obvious traps like on I made with blasting charges, all it takes is 2 charges and I got 7 outta 9 raiders and the rest fled
