It's time for a festival for my colony, but whenever I start it (at campfire or ritual spot), it doesn't stop. The progress bar begins to move, then seems to get stuck.

Instead of it taking 'a couple of hours' it gets to the point to where colonists are passing out, and the progress bar is still about half way. The green 'haze' and totems also disappear which I can't remember happening at previous festivals. Other ones worked fine.

I use them as cheap ways to keep animal types apart: have those that need lots of upkeep close to your colonists.

I still have walls - and I could use walls for this! But it's the cost and speed of fences that makes the difference. I guess that's why livestock farmers don't use walls in IRL..?  Cue lots of farmers getting on my case
