It would be cool if raiders would hover above the map in their ships, firing some lasers at your base, before dropping down and attacking.

There shouldn't be insta-kill weapons, this is about story, and it isn't a tactical rts, and so you should at least have a chance to survive.

What if there are laser pointers or charge signals on the insta kill rockets?  Besides, who cares if 5 or 7 colonists dies during one really massive raider invasion.
But then their story ends, though a laser pointer would be acceptable. Remember, these are anti-defence, not antipersonell

Timerift.

People from this planet in a different age arrive through the rift.

Groups that can arrive are:
cavemen with clubs and stuff.
dieselpunk people with awesome dieselpunk railguns and rifles and stuff.
sword-armed knights
near future people with r-4's and near future guns like that.
far future people, refugees from when the galaxy was still shattered before the transcendance of man, with massively destructive, cyberpunkish wmds and stuff.
transcendent people from the early stages of the transcendance where technology was still wielded and not melded to the body, armed with mind probes and gear that bends reality to their whim.
people from the far transcendance, with technology a natural part of their bodies, unkillable, simply travelling, possibly attacking your colony if they feel like it.

No need for a time rift, this is part of the rim world universe, on all these different planets they encompass all possible tech levels (from cavemen to energy beings)

I know, but the idea would be that hey come from this planet, and thus re more angry and likely to lash out that just travelers.

New research- "not again" allows you to build a laser designator that allows for orbital potted plant bombings. 8)

A flowerpot and a whale.

Or one fleshed out tech level and nine with depth that does not really matter because it's not buildable.

I like all of the ideas here. Multiple types of raider attack would be cool, though there needs to b e one where a bunch of riders with shotguns use blasting charges to get into your base.  and one where 200 oafs charge with blunt pitchforks to steal your squirrels and lamps :P. And on a more serious note artillery would be awesome, instead of raiders just running into a killfunnel they might bombard it until it is no longer a kill funnel.

Multiple tech levels of weapon, you  know, caveman tech, medieval tech, dieselpunk, modern, near future, post-fall (relics from a time of endless war.), and transcendent tech.

Dieselpunk should be a tech level, you know: caveman tech level, medieval tech, napoleonic tech, Dieselpunk tech, modern tech(What we have now), future tech(The r-4 and near future stuff), post-fall tech(relics from an age of endless, destructive war), and transcendent tech(psionics, ethereal implants, dimensional warps, and other cool stuff).

Yeah, it should be a tactical decision. I mean, raiders should go to the weakest part if it makes sense, but if it's a killbox or funnel they should just use breaching charges to get inside your base

We need some transcendent weapons. You know, psychic probes which use intelligence(either a new stat, or just research skill by another name) to either panic raiders or, when multiplayer is added, to drop the loyalty of enemy colonists. Or maybe a nanogrenade, which detonates to reveal nanobots that burrow inside people's bodies and cause havoc.
