I disagree entirely with everything you have said here.
the 'you can't play game mode X because you haven't played game mode Y yet' model of games is one I hate with a passion, some people do not have the time to slug through one mode just to unlock the one they want, it is overly restrictive.

though I do admit that being hit with too many options first time you play can be daunting, for this a 'recommended' starting mode could be displayed.

I think (and don't quote me on this, I'm not the best at reading debug messages) that you have a mod installed called 'advanced researching' and it just hasn't loaded properly, it may not be compatible with the current version or another mod.

Started off with a pet warg.... not complaining about spawning with a mega killing machine but not sure if this is a bug or not as only spawned with dogs before

step 3) get home and discover no internet for ages (ISP where adamant we hadn't paid the bill when we had)
step 4) see alpha 11 released
step 5) finally get internet back

If you have changed between story tellers it breaks the 'events' this is a known bug in 10f
