General Discussion / Re: Turret Defense in Rim World?
October 08, 2013, 05:32:38 PM
Wait wait, seriously? I'm "playing the game wrong" because I'm going outside the bounds of what the game expects me to do.

That's not fair at all. My style of playing the game is just as valid as yours! I'm not asking for any fancy support! I'm the guy who plays Dominion/Settlers of Catan to make sure the one person loses no matter what, not to win the whole game. Is that so wrong?

Too fragile? Things would explode? Friendly fire? Challenge Accepted.

General Discussion / Turret Defense in Rim World?
October 07, 2013, 04:31:19 PM
So I've been thinking about fun ways to potentially abuse Rimworld, and I've found a game mode that I've been enjoying recently. You basically place Solar Panels everywhere out in the open, and build batteries/auto-turrets around them. Connect them all via power cables and, theoretically, wherever raiders spawn you'll have usually have the upper hand on them.

But I wanted to try something else. It looks like raiders pick open areas away from your colony. So if that's true, you could leave one area open, and have all the raiders funnel down a pathway trying to take out your defenses at every step, not unlike a Turret Defense game. Has anybody tried it yet?

Ideas / Re: RTS style groupings?

Yeah, levers actually sounds like a better solution for lights/turrets, since then it could potentially open up avenues for interesting stories.

But I still think groupings for drafted colonists would be useful.

Ideas / RTS style groupings?
October 01, 2013, 09:12:32 PM
I find myself often times wanting to assign groups to various structures people for various actions. For example, I will usually keep my auto-turrets offline until raiders come, at which point I pause the game and turn them all on one at a time.  That helps conserve power. Similarly, when raiders come, if it's going to be a long siege, I'll often turn off most of my lamps.

Same thing with if I wanted to have two teams of colonists attack from two different angles, or have my rifle snipers attack from one area, and my pistol users from another.

If you haven't checked out "A dark room", it's a neat little game that doesn't really play out the way you expect it to. While it doesn't really have any emotional impact or tough decisions to make, it's still a pretty fun game. Neat scavenging elements to it.

General Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself!
September 19, 2013, 07:53:03 PM
-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
Worked with Tynan previously, read up on RimWorld, and was interested instantly.

-What's your favorite other game?
League of Legends. Currently sitting at Gold II and hoping to end this season at Plat V or better!

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
FFX-2 has, in my opinion, probably the best combat system of any FF game (other than tactics). And I strongly defend it on those grounds!

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
The kind that's free, and preferably has milk. Hell, I'll even take almond milk if that's all you've got!

Ideas / Re: Got an idea for an incident?

It would be really cool if you could have adjacent colonies to interact with. What if a bunch of prisoners/convicts set up shop nearby? They may have a shady past, but they're just trying to survive. Do you try to bring them back to justice? Leave them be? Try trading with them? Try to integrate with their society?

There's a lot of cool story telling that could happen if you had other people nearby to interact with.

- War breaks in that solar system out and the system is engulfed in fighting (military camps are set up nearby, and don't necessarily try to interact with you, but may try to do so. What if they try to take your women? Or "capture" your stockpile of ammunition? What if deserters try to hide in your town?)

- All species of wild life suddenly vanish, one at a time. Why do they disappear? Where do I get my food from now? Will we be next?

- WORM ATTACKS! Everybody likes the worms from dune. Games should have more of those.

- Zombie outbreak. Played out, but could be fun, especially if you've got lots of corpses from dead pirates lying about.

- Drought. Affects plant yields/growth

- Volcano eruptions
