On top of above, a perfect - and open source to that - tool for comparing two folders even with subdirectories is WinMerge (http://winmerge.org/).

In it you can open two files/folders and after the tool runs its comparisons it will show you details on file pairings - if the files are the same, if and how many changes are between them, it even handles renamed files (though I believe only if a suffix is added) etc.

Also, it has its own editor, showing color-coded lines for changes and stuff between two compared files, so you have a complete package, when you couple this with an external editor to edit your translated files in. I use Notepad++, as already mentioned.

Before this I had to have four tabs open in Total Commander and use its own comparison tool (much inferior to WinMerge) with much clicking and moving around in directories. This way I only need WinMerge to compare old and new english original files and Notepad++ to edit my Slovak translations.

Of course I do not believe I am a genious and surely WinMerge is already used by people (or similar utilities like BeyondCompare - which is paid btw), but some of you might not yet do so, so this is for them :)

On a different forum (boardgamegeek.com for those interested) I asked yesterday if there was a way through a RegEx search&replace to remove all XML tags besides "defname", "label" and "description" from a text file - to be able to see what we translators need to see :)

And voila! A helpful fella replied today with the below RegEx code that I successfully tried on one of the XMLs from the "Defs" folder.

The result is just the lines containing these tags (and the text within them) are kept and all other lines are deleted from the file. In this way you do not need to scroll through the file and search meticulously for all defnames, labels and descriptions and instead have it all neatly one after the other. I left the "defname" in there for string reference in the resulting translated file.

This does not change the format of the Defs file into the "language" file, so it is more for reference and backwards control for changes between versions (after which you can edit your translated files).

I am using Notepad++ and it works there, so not sure if it works in ALL RegEx-enabled utilities.

Search:

Replace with:

Thx both! Working on it already, based on the german translation.

One more question - are only those files in Definjected in the german translation used? Cause there are more XML files in the subdirs under "Core\Defs"... But maybe those do not contain anything translatable (yet)...

Judging by the other translations already included in 0.4.430 I just wanted to be sure - for my own Slovak translation I need to create a "DefInjected" subfolder (besides "Keyed") in "sk-SK", copy in there all the folders under "Mods\Core\Defs" and translate the XML files in them?

My take:

Amazing idea, but I personally would define the edges more and lose some detail on the bigger objects (as was already suggested).

I am all for bringing realism into the game, but this has to be "stylistic realism", where all components of the game match. So if you make ALL of the game graphics in this style, it might work in the end! But as much of the game is played zoomed out anyway, all the details then lose their purpose somehow...

The ones that stand out for me are:

Solar Panels
  • there I would change the color to dark blue-ish, as I believe that is the color that solar panels use
  • also, I think I have not seen "uneven" solar panels, but rather all of them having the same components, e.g. your interpretation might me more of an artistic one, so if you want them like that, very well...
Research table
  • this one is unnecessarily complex and should not stand out that much between all the other "moderately complex" art around it
  • you can stay with the green color, but maybe a simpler grid like on this "cutting mat" image would do? http://thefussycut.com/images/cutting_mats/RM-CG.jpg

Yes, expanding on specific names would be the way in the end I guess.

What I am trying to use so far is something like this:

Instead of "Shooting at {0}." being translated literally into Slovak, I would use something like "Shooting at: {0}". In this way I do not need to use grammatic declination (which is not used in english in the way it is in many other languages) and instead leave the target definition/name in basic form.

General question (if already answered, just point me there!):

When a new release comes out that has some new things that need to be translated - or changes in existing text - how does one spot these changes/additions in need of translation to an already existing language? I.e. how does one get a "diff", like on the wiki page?

I have only a few of the Keyed XML files to translate and can happily report that so far everything works as expected. Your issue with the earlier SK Translation state was probably an out-of-date version of some files, as there have been many changes between Alpha 3 and the current one... Will also update Github with the latest files as per what is currently on the Wiki for translation.

Thx! Currently checking what could cause the issues with the slovak translation under the latest build, whilst finishing translating Gameplay.xml...
