I really like the stream, and your write ups.  I'm also playing a polar base at the moment.

Some people were talking about the sun light throughout the year at the poles.  Everybody realizes that the way rimworld is calculating daylight here is completely crazy right?  At the poles, there's only 1 day in the year.  The sun should rise at the vernal equinox, slowly get higher, and then set at the autumnal equinox.  Hopefully Tynan will fix this, or perhaps someone can create a mod that would make the daylight calculation in rimworld correct.  When I chose a polar start I was looking for dealing with the challenge of a 6 month long night, with the realistic darkness mod on.

General Discussion / Re: Pigs vs. Chickens vs. Cows
February 27, 2018, 02:05:41 PM
Alright, I thought I'd leave a more detailed post because I actually spent a lot of time trying to work out an optimal set up.

First off, as for the most efficient way to turn vegetables into protein, chickens have a hunger rate of .35, cows of .85, but produce 15 milk every day, and chickens produce 1 egg (equal to 5 milk) every 1.7 days.  So it's easier on your fields, and on your computer, to use cows.  The downside would be the labor of milking them.

Generally, I'd avoid letting the cows wander.  It's less labor intensive to let them eat the haygrass as it's growing, but you'll get far less yield out of your soil.  I prefer to put them in a barn adjacent to the kitchen.  Anyway, you'll have to go track down the cows to milk them otherwise.   To haul the hay to them, pigs/boars or dogs.  That way you don't have to haul anything, just milking, sowing, and harvesting.  As haulers, pigs have the advantage that they can eat hay, but produce more filth and can browse on the crops in your field.  But if you zone them appropriately that shouldn't be a problem.  The best thing to feed either boars or dogs, however, is certainly raiders, if you've got a cold place to store them and an appropriate sense of the macabre.

However, I've heard that the increased nutritional value of cooked food means that a field of corn,  cooked into simple meals, then fed to your livestock, will produce maybe 30-40 percent more nutrition per acre.  Assuming you're up for some cooking labor.  Although I've never tried this myself.

As far as wool, Alpacas can be sheared for 100 wool every 15 days, and have a hunger rate of .45.  Muffalos can be sheared for 100 wool every 25 days, and have a hunger rate of .85.  They also produce 10 milk every 2 days.  But if you look at it, a herd of both alpacas and cows has a much higher yield in milk and wool than muffalos.  And Alpaca wool is more valuable.

The set up I usually go for is a herd of cows and alpacas, then some dogs or boars to look after them.  I dunno, if anywhere my thinking is off let me know.

After Chickens got nerfed, I'm fairly sure that cows beat out chickens for protein production.  You do have to go to the trouble of milking them.  Actually, for eggs, I think iguanas might be better than chickens, at least according to the math I could find on the wiki.  Although they might eat their own eggs, if you're not careful, I believe.

Bugs / Eternal daylight at the poles
February 26, 2018, 07:10:30 PM
This is very very noticeable at the poles, where I have my base.  There should be 6 months of darkness, during the winter, and then 6 months of twilight, during the summer, switching at the equinoxes.  Instead, the sun never ever ever sets.

Is there any way this can be fixed?  I was really looking forward to surviving the 6 of black.

I made a legendary large silver sculpture.  Apparently the beauty of items maxes at 1000.

General Discussion / Re: Colony Names?

So what do you folks like to name your colony?  I went with the traditional names often associated with the first couple of colonies:

Butt-Town
Funkytown
Crapville

But then I moved on to eighteenth century English colonies.

Jamestown
Roanoak
Plymouth

So what do you folks like to name your colonies?

My current colony is also named Roanoak.  Before there was Crone's Marsh, Farpine, and Starvation's Teeth.  Also Eclipse Colony.

I'm sure this maybe has been said before, but I can't be bothered to scroll through all 19 pages of this thread, so, I don't really know if this is an exploit, but if you make a room that is 2x1 with a door and a bed inside, colonists will use it as a bedroom and have no mood debuffs from it, thus making actual bedrooms not really useful.

It has, but it needs to be said more.  This is one of the most ridiculous exploits in the game, along with the vent trick, and wiring to use reconnect as a power switch.  Tynan, if you're reading this, I'd list that as answers 1, 2, and 3.

Or easier to heat?

I would like to second this topic, I'm also really interested in the maths here.

Pigs and Boars are the best way of disposing of raiders.  They can haul and consume the dead bodies so your colonists don't get debuffs.  And turn raiders into usable meat and leather without any debuffs.

A new build is up! This is the first release candidate. Hoping to release it as final if there aren't major issues.

This is also the first non-dev version so it should run faster and you can build mods against it.

Thanks all!

Wow, quick.  Clearly a certain "Bad Magician" should have forced trait Industrious.  I've been holding off building my next colony waiting for the next Alpha.  Do you think it's probably saves would transfer to the main update from the current unstable build?

I can't imagine they would, given that installed batteries don't lose their charge during a solar flare. Z

As a matter of fact, I think (but would need to check to be sure) that they still continue to charge during the solar flare event; It's just items that draw power that seem to be disabled.

Uninstalled batteries don't lose charge, and batteries do not charge during a solar flare.

PS- I've never actually done this, but I've been told that if you knock out the corners between rooms, you can place a sculpture there, and it will raise the impressiveness of all the adjacent rooms (so up to 4x the beauty).  There's lots of janky optimal ways to construct bases and kill zones that have to do with diagonals, many already mentioned.  Has anything been done about these strats in A15?

Another exploity thing is that very often sterile tiles will increase the impressiveness of a room far more than they should, as in they're better than gold or silver tiles.  The solution, I think, would be to have cleanliness above 0 not increase impressiveness.

And is there ever any reason to make a reasonably sized chicken coop.  You seem to be able to jam as much livestock as you want into as little area as you want.  200 chickens should probably not be able to be housed on 2 tiles.

This is just a minor complaint: can't consume unprepared coca leaves.

Coca leaves can, and actually traditionally are, consumed without preparation.  The leaves when chewed, or brewed as a simple tea, are a mild non-addictive stimulant/hunger suppressant roughly similar to coffee.

For anyone wondering Luciferium is

Pain x80
Consciousness +25
Moving +25
Blood Filtration +70
Blood Pumping +15
Metabolism +10
Breathing +20
Sight +20
Hearing +20

and yes, it stack with amphetamines.  The only thing is, I don't know how to make it.  It's not at the drug table.  I don't think you can roll its addiction at the start, which is probably good.

The mood display is very useful, and well implemented.

@Mike
It's there, it's been added to the A15 features preview page.

It forces you to periodically refresh the bloodlines.  Go tame some wild rabbits.

Thanks Tynan,

I forgot this, so I edited it in.  But is marijuana supposed to not be growable hydroponically?
