What I find impossible with caravans are the logistics. Pemmican and packaged meals are shown as if they'd spoil within a bunch of days when they should last for a year. I currently have a caravan starving to death right next to my settlement and cause the game doesn't allow me to settle down right next to an existing colony and gather a bunch of supplies I'm losing colonists so in that situation you actually have to hope to get ambushed.
You also don't have the option to simply slaughter one of the animals trodding along. They'd rather starve to death than kill one of their muffalos to survive. Muffalos giving milk also isn't taken into account.
Every time I've sent caravans out it has just been a really unfun experience cause they lack the tools to manage them. And who cares about bedrolls when they still need construction to work, and mental breaks keep halting them with no way of influencing what happens during the travels.
Not to mention that on one hand you can just carry incapacitated colonists and exit the map but on the other when traveling colonists that can't move bring everything to halt which is stupid. Just strap them to the muffalo or something.
