The way the description reads:
"Allowed areas are defined areas you can assign to colonists.  Colonists will not accept work or fulfill their needs outside of their allowed areas.   Unless I'm reading that bolded part wrong, I would expect them to stay inside until otherwise allowed out.

The attached saved game was only to demonstrate what was going on.  When I ran across this oddness was in a modified game where I was trying to keep the colonists indoors while a warg attack was going on (there's a bug with one of the mods where you can't lock the doors, so this was my attempt at a work around).

In that case, I had restricted them to indoors, where there was plenty of food items, bedding, etc.  Their needs would of been met inside.  Except, they went about their merrily way, going outside to harvest food, etc.

Good point, I missed that part.

I just restarted the game, if it doesn't get looked at, then no worries.

Either that or my colonists are just total anarchists.

Environment:
Vanilla, all mods shut off.

Steps to Recreate:
Built an approximate 6x6 steel walled building with a door.
Mark the interior as allowed area.

Expected Results:
Colonists not to leave the building, even to get food / medicine / supplies.

Actual Results:
Blatant anarchy.  Disregards the zone.  Total breakdown of society!

Save game / world link - has above demo set up already:

My game locked up and I was forced to kill it (Mac).  Since then, anytime I've loaded this save, it'll play for a couple of minutes then lock up. This happens with all my saves (both auto and manual).  Restarting and reloading it throws these messages in the debug log:
Rimworld 0.11.857 rev1187
Initialized the edBinterface mod
Initialized the EdB Prepare Carefully mod
Initializing map from Jamestown3 with mods Core,EdBInterface, EdBPrepareCarefully, and SCA11Core
Exception spawning loaded thing Kimmy: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object at Verse.PawnTweener.get TweenedPosRoot<strangecharacter>(0x000001 in <filename_unknown>:0
Replaced standard gameplay interface with EdBinterface

Somehow I don't think it's
Kimmy Gibbler that's causing my crash, so I'm hoping someone has seen this before.

Save game is located here - Drop Box Link

World file here  -

I'm not sure where the output_log file is located at on the MAC - if you can tell me where it's at I'll pull it and post it.

Downloaded the latest version, and it won't start when running it.  I've had no issues with the previous versions.

I tried removing all mods I had running and still no dice.  Redownloaded and still nothing.

Found the issue.  From /var/log/system.log:

Quick google shows something is missing the executable bit.

I ended up running this command:
find . -type f ! -perm u+x -exec u+x {} \;

This gave everything that didn't have the executable bit the executable bit and now things are working.

This sounds like a build / packaging issue - may want to look into it.

So, no one else runs the mac version?

Also, the downloads for  paying customers is WAY WAY WAY slow.
