General Discussion / Re: Can you tame a Thrumbo?
September 11, 2015, 06:00:54 PM
I had one self tame.  He was blind in both eyes and frail.

It didn't matter though.   After 4 days he just wondered off anyways.  Not sure why.  So I loaded the autosave and harvested him for his meat, fur, and horn.

I got an email today.   It was NOT an email telling me to download A12.  I'm sad now.  :(

General Discussion / Animal Trading
July 29, 2015, 04:11:08 PM
I didn't see it in the work log.  Maybe I missed it.  I am curious about trading animals.

I like to play extreme climates.   The ice sheet climate's lack of native animals would make the animal taming aspect of the game pointless.  Or can I trade for some Deer/Muffalo/etc and raise more of them in heated indoor areas?

If so, will each animal have comfortable temperature ranges that differ depending on their native climate?  That way there is an advantage to raising Iguanas in the Desert and Deer on an Ice Sheet.

I am using the Ice Sheet mod and trying to make a colony on the ice sheet.   You cannot grow or harvest food in any way.   So you either have to go cannibal or use hydroponic tables to survive.

The problem is that despite having the Hydroponic tables powered, illuminated with a sun lamp, and kept at the right temperature the plants are constantly "resting."  Which means they are not growing.   Which means I am starving.

They are "resting" so often that they takes over a week to grow one plant.   This means cannibalism and trade would be the only effective way to get food.  Unless you have a staggering amount of hydro tables which is unaffordable early game.

Is there a way around this?

Mods / Original Colonist Customization
April 18, 2015, 11:32:57 AM
I want to be able to choose my first three colonists.  I want to select their age, backgrounds, traits, etc.   I am sure somebody has made this already but I cannot find it.

I want to start a cannibal colony without having to hit the randomize button 3k times.

I would think this will be something besiegers will have to have dropped in along with food.  It would be cool if they exploded if incinerated while in a stockpile.

General Discussion / Re: Brain Damage

Personally I think Rimworld is already one of the best strategy games being developed whether you intended that way or not.  It's a great game and I am happy to be part of the alpha process.  Thanks for your work.

Getting back to the original topic.  I don't think having armor or helmets prevent (or maybe just decease the odds) of those types of injuries as detrimental to the storytelling aspect of the game.  Think about it, Johnny and Jack went to fight the raiders.   Johnny wore a helmet and Jack wore a cowboy hat.  Since then he's known as Simple Jack because he took a head shot and thinks he can talk to Muffalos.

I'm not trying to be a contrarian.  But when I first saw helmets in the game I just assumed that would be part of their function.   Protection against head injury.

I understand the game has a level of drama.  However, it's still a strategy game.  A good strategy game has something the player can do to counter events (a counter strategy).  It will require sacrifices to do so and may leave the player vulnerable in other areas but it's still an option the player can use.  Or not use, if the player chooses.  For instance, I don't like sieges.   So I am more drawn to tundra maps because the attackers start to freeze and then assault very quickly.   However, by choosing tundra I have created other challenges I have to deal with.  This choice I made as the player has not reduced the drama of my game.  Simple Jack can easily freeze or starve in the tundra but it reduces the chances of him getting blasted to pieces by a mortar round while chowing down on Muffalo and Potato casserole.

No matter what challenge it is there should be a counter strategy to stop or fix it.   If you can't fix brain damage there should be a way to prevent it.  Tragedy and drama is fun... but playing for 6 hours and having one unlucky shot turn your only good doctor into "Full Retard" is NOT fun.

General Discussion / Re: Can uranium be found naturally?

I have never seen it available for mining.   I hope that changes.   I also hope we get to see Uranium used for more things like building power plants or very destructive weaponry.

I hate sieges too.   That is why the coldest maps are now my favorite.  Once they start to freeze they will begin their assault.

I want to be able to beat my slaves when they misbehave.   I also want to be able to beat them when they don't misbehave.

I haven't had time to play yet but one would think you could harvest them from prisoners.  Maybe dead bodies?

I really like the idea of removing a colonist's legs and replacing them with tank tracks.

General Discussion / Re: Leg Blown off?

I wish when a leg got blown off you could see it on the map.   You could also pick it up and serve it with potatoes if you wanted to.
