General Discussion / Update today?
November 23, 2018, 09:57:17 AM
So I just went into Steam to play and had to download an update today.  No word in the news as to what it does.  Anyone else have any idea?

Ok, I'm up for it.  I won't be able to play till this weekend, but I'll attempt to give it a shot then.

I set everything except luci and peno to every 3 days and only at 70% for both the slider values.  I don't bother with micromanaging drug use at all.  It does cause problems once in a while but I do think that a bit of randomness is what this game is all about.

Ooh, just noticed that there is a new prisoner interaction: Reduce Resistance.  We now pick between that and recruit.  I have no idea what the strategy is for this.  I just picked the Reduce option, maybe that will make the recruiting time overall less?

General Discussion / Re: the new beta password

Unless something has changed recently, there isn't one.  Just go to properties, beta tab, opt in, and leave the password field blank.

Storyteller: Randy
Difficulty: Rough
Biome/hilliness: Arid Shrubland/Small Hills
Commitment mode: (yes/no) yes
Current colony age (days): 68
Hours played in the last 2 days: about 6
Complete mod list: Display Radius, Numbers

My first game without any scumsaving, and at the highest difficulty I've played..  Just over a year passed, but I felt like I never got out of the begining game phase.

I was done in by raids, as expected since I am terrible at combat in pretty much any game I play.  I actually didn't have any colonist die in battle, but because of medical complications afterwards.  The end came when my two surviving colonists were downed by accepting a person being chased, and then I found out that the rescuee was a 76 year old hermit (ha!) who couldn't doctor.  They died, and she was on her own again.  Until the ostritch tore off her right leg, that is.

The new graphics take some getting used to, but I don't hate them.  I actually like the meat cubes and will probably try making some in real life and feed them (cooked) to my husband just cause they're funny. The game was harder than I am used to of course, but didn't feel unfair.  I think that I can learn to get better at combat to survive longer at the difficulty, though I will probably drop it down to medium my next playthrough.

My biggest irritation was that when my colonists were downed their weapons were forbidden and I sometimes had a hard time finding them, but that is a .18 issue too.  Really, think everything should default to allowed, and then let the player decide to forbid them.  I know there are probably good reasons why it is the way it is.  I just know this issue made the game less fun for me.

I hate to say this, but I think I agree with Tynan that commitment mode really makes the game better.  I was playing Rimworld as more a less a building sim, and there is so much more depth to this than that gendre.  I was more involved with the struggles of my colony, and I felt more of an emotional connection to my pawns (to a point, I know they're just pixels and AI, of course).

I don't know if I got far enough for my data to offer any use, but there is the graph anyways.  Off to start a new colony!

General Discussion / Re: Introduce yourself!
July 27, 2018, 10:38:13 PM
Hi everyone, I'm Annie.  I've been posting a bit on the forums, and I realized I've never hit this thread.  So here it goes!

I'm a 54 year old woman with a husband and 7 cats.  I've literally been playing pc games since the days when they used cassette tape storage (our computer would reboot every time the fridge condenser kicked in.  Good times).  All of this doesn't mean I am particularly good or anything, I break towards just goofing around and not dealing with min/maxing.

Games I've sank way to many hours in, in no particual order:

  • Bard's Tale and other rpgs when they were in the golden age of the Commodore 64
  • Civs 1-6.  Not a big fan of I think it was 4?  But overall, yeah, Civ.
  • The Sims Series.  Fond Memories, but EA destroyed it and now on boycott status for me
  • Everquest/WoW/City of Heroes
  • Tropico.  First was great, the series is decent now but too much a dlc cash grab.  No official on boycott status, but I'm not really bothering anymore either.
  • Stardew Valley
  • Don't Starve
  • Lately a odd little story generation management game I can remember the name of

As far as Tynan's suggestions:

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?
Rimworld I found from recommendations from the Don't Starve Community.  I truly love DS, but I was getting a bit bored with it.  Others in the same position said they liked Rimworld too, so I gave it a go.  Fell in love in first playthrough when a mad squirrel destroyed my life.  Oh, you shouldn't ignore those like I do in real life?  Wow!

-What's your favorite other game?
Seriously, Don't Starve is awesome.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?
I was playing a gnome in Wow and running around sand dunes hunting small things, don't remember the details.  What I do remember is that I suddenly came upon a giant something or other.  Spider maybe?  Details.  What I do remember is that I was startled in real life.  And I screamed, in real life.  And my real life husband and our room mate at the time were at their computers playing their games.  I startled them in real life.  They laughed at me for months, and rightly so.

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?
Cinnamon raison bagels slathered with butter.  Yes, that counts and cereal.

General Discussion / Re: Reddit or Forum
July 27, 2018, 10:04:55 PM
One nice thing about Reddit is that there is almost always someone around to answer a question in realtime if you need that.  I play in the middle of the night (I'm a second shift factory workers so I basically keep vampire hours) when things can be a bit slow.  Reddit can be good for those "A Thrumbo self-tamed"  That's... good?" moments.

For the record I found that the I couldn't feed the thrumbo at the time so I had to slaughter take it to a farm upstate where it could run around free and happy and away from my damned crops.

I guess I'm the only meat cube fan here.  I'm not saying that I don't think that they are weird and kinda gross, just that I like them for that fact.  But then, I have seven cats and a husband, so I'm very used to weird and gross stuff.

Alright then, you guys have talked me into it.  I'll be on twitch in an hour or so, playing Randy Rough on Commitment mode (my first time for both) so if seeing streamers have actual failures is your cup of tea then this is sure to be right up your alley.  Just search for Rimworld and Annie and I'm pretty sure you'll find me.  Not posting my actual link since that might be against the rules or maybe just rude, I know this forum isn't for my personal promotion and I respect that.

5. No self-promotion: No promotion of your own channel/mod/product. Limitation: You can mention your product or channel in context of other discussions, as long as it's a non-forced mention.

I have no idea if this counts as a "non-forced mention" or not.  Mods, if posting this is in any way inappropriate please let me know and it will delete, apologize, and never, ever do anything like this again.

Last edit: I'm about to go live.  Won't post a link here, but if you want PM me and I'll post a link to my channel or YouTube vid of it when it is up if you wish.

General Discussion / Re: New Build = New Colony
July 27, 2018, 01:30:05 PM
Oh, I'm aware and accept the nature of beta's.  I would say I'm frustrated by this or anything, like I said I'm glad that the updates are coming as they are (even this latest Meatcube update, I like meatcubes).  I guess I was just wondering if restarting after each one was the best approach, or playing through till the end.  Since Tynan answered this, I feel a bit better about not restarting after each one.  I really look forward to winning/horribly losing a full game so I can post one of those cool graphs and maybe give some useful data for once.

Thanks for the clarification, Tynan.  I've never even gotten close to building a spaceship, I look forward to actually sticking with a colony long enough to get further.  Nice to have plans for the weekend!

I would like to stream my playthroughs (not really that skilled, but whatevs).  However, I believe that Tynan has said that he would rather we not stream the unstable branch since things are changing so fast and not always balanced properly.  I dunno, until I hear otherwise from him or any other dev I'm staying off of Twitch with this game out of respect.

Just waiting sorta kinda patiently waiting for the greenlight to go.

General Discussion / New Build = New Colony
July 27, 2018, 06:02:21 AM
Man, this unstable branch testing has been a rollercoaster ride.  I really like seeing the game progress so quickly.  I am having an issue in that every time a new build gets posted I have an uncontrollable urge to start a new colony to testdrive how the new stuff feels, especially when it affects the research tree (due to my work I can really only play Fri-Sat and Sundays, so this isn't an everyday type of thing).  I feel like I'm getting really good at the very first part of the game, but am absolutely clueless about the mid/late game stages.

Is anyone else having this issue?  Should I just ignore the new builds and power through with a game regardless of what gets changed?  Love to hear if how the rest of you guys are dealing with this or have any insights on what I ought to be doing to be in a better position to give useful feedback at this stage of development.
