General Discussion / Re: Rimworld has been greenlit!

Congratulations on the green light.  I see an interview a few weeks ago from one of the guys who developed Euro Truck Simulator,  he said they was doing fine with sale and was quite happy.  Then the game got green lit and they just was not prepared for the explosion of the fan base.  Their sales tripled overnight and by the end of the first week the steam sales figures were higher than any other outlet.

I hope you get a similar success story and Rimworld becomes a hit.

I've asked Capnduck as well to contact Tynan. For those of you who don't know, he's the guy who made Dwarf Fortress much more accessible back in the day, through a series of video tutorials. :D

Heh, CapnDuck's videos was how I learned to play Dwarf Fortress sooo many moons ago.  I didn't realise he was still making videos.

I like the idea of the escape pods being used for early game power, maybe they could even be used for early shelter from the elements.  They would only last for a few nights at most to force you into building something more permanent.

The low tech start is something I like to,  Finding the first set of plans in the wreckage could be randomly chosen from a small set of low tech upgrades.

As for storage i'm wondering if there are any plans to have to manage the debris made from mining out walls?  On the videos I've currently seen it looks like they leave no trace behind when mining,  I know it can be a pain but I liked it in Dwarf Fortress when part of mining was also housekeeping and getting all that rock out of there.  Again this could be tied into the research options, maybe the upgraded miners leave a lot less debris behind etc.

Video / Re: My preview video for RimWorld
October 04, 2013, 10:01:57 PM
Very good commentary,  my only small recommendation is please don't have the game running on full speed all the time.  A couple of videos I have watched now from various people just leave it on flat out all the time.  During down time such as colonists sleeping or doing less eventful chores like mining out new rooms it seems fine, but during combat or when you are explaining something it gets quite messy.   The combat especially, it was over in the blink of an eye, we didn't get to see any of the cover tactics in detail etc.

Please don't take these as complaints as I and i'm sure many others really appreciate the time and effort you youtubers put into your video's and help spread the word of great Indi games and devs.

Thanks for the video and keep up the fantastic work.

There's no comparison at play here, I was merely responding to Rainy's "rant" from earlier.

Ah Sorry British, I never meant it to come across as a rant, was just explaining my satisfaction with the way RimWorlds kickstarter is being organised.

Plus congrats to the RW team on the halfway mark.  It must be a great feeling seeing this amount of interest so early in the kickstarter :D

Yes indeed, it goes well! Thanks for the support to y'all.

And yeah, no specific stretch goals. More money just means more art/sound/etc support from other people. I'll be developing the game in modules as planned. I won't do anything to threaten the basic schedule.

No sex drugs and rock'n'roll with the extra cash? Damn, must really not be much fun being a game dev :P

Seriously though,  I do applaud your approach to this Tynan.  It's nothing new asking for kickstarter funds but it is quite refreshing that you are sticking to your original plan or vision for the game.  Not like some where they have to just make up extra stretch goals that probably were never meant to be part of the game but they need to justify the extra cash.  Yes! I'm looking at you Star Citizen!  As much as I love the concept of SC I fear the feature creep will cripple it in the long run.

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?

The rock paper shotgun article made me aware of this game specifically, but i've been a fan of the dwarf fortress style game for years, many many years, too many years lol :P  I've pretty much played them all.  From the old days of Dungeon Keeper right up to Dwarf Fortress, Gnomaria, Towns, Prison Architect etc etc.  I love the way you are not always in direct control of your minions or followers.  You just guide them and they complete the tasks as they see fit.

-What's your favorite other game?

The big one for me would have to be Dwarf Fortress,  I tried it so many times at the start and gave up because of its massive learning curve, but once you start to master it there is no other game as complex as DF.  I played a lot of Gnomoria to, around 200 hours, it's great fun, very much like Dwarf Fortress but without as much depth or a learning curve steeper than the face of Everest.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?

Not really a story but it's embarrassing to admit and it is game related.  I have played around 400 hours of the Sims 3 lol.  Yep I have all the expansions and still play off and on once in awhile.

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?

This one's easy, it's Quaker Porridge Oats.  Followed closely by Shredded Wheat, not that new age hippy crap like the mini SHredded Wheat.  I'm talking about the big brick sized stuff.

Random stuff about me.

I live in the UK, in a county called Cornwall. It rains here, it rains a lot.  I work self employed as an Engineer and play drums,Bass,Guitar as a hobby and thats about all I have to say about me lol.

Can't wait to get my hands on RimWorld,  DF with a Sci-Fi setting? Yes f***ing please good Sir!
