What about a mechaboom rat. Functions as a mad boomrat but will not go off unless near an enemy and not in the home area.

What about an unbuild command. Instead of building they tear down and recover a % of the orginal cost. This could also be how pirates could strip metal from the colony.

So the paste dispenser, dishes out paste so the colonists will have energy to accomplish tasks. How about reversing the polarity. A food processor that converts food stuff into energy.

What about vermin crop eaters. Critters stealing food supplies. Which could be hillarious if a locus like swarm rolled the area like army ants.
A creature that gnaws into power couplings and drains energy as food and would probably have a nasty electric shock attack.

The fence would keep things out without blocking line of sight. You would have to turn the fence on and it should be a big power drain to limit the amount of time it could stay active.

My machine is not a virtual box and will not have the driver problems of a virtual box, but yes a Linux head would be better.

My windows machine can dual boot windows and Ubuntu. It's been quite a while since I booted to Ubuntu, but I think I can remember my key. I'll post the version when I get home, but it's at least a year old version, but I could always update.
I used fraps in windows a few years back, I could always just turn on my bike camera (go pro knock off) and upload it lol
I'm a windows system admin, so I have had to debug with Microsoft for what that's worth. I've had to post on many companies issue trackers which look alot like bug trackers.
I'm sure I could carve out at least an hour a day to play around and it wouldn't hurt my feeling if I get replaced by real linux guys

Sticky fingers Hal grabed an alien artifact - hmm no instruction manual - random events. Maybe the nerds can crack a few of the effects for predictable events. Limited uses.
Eco imbalance - weed outbreak that strangles crops. Workers must remove the weed spaces. Could lie dormant in some spaces to come back later.
Aliens leave a clone of one of the workers. Is he trustworthy?
Alien animals that have been breed for food, the aliens show up and it is akin to humans eating dogs.
Posse shows up wanting to arrest one of the colonists.
Master Mechanic for hire. Hire him for some fixups before he moves on.
Yevette sold some of our supplies for ride off the planet. (Dr Smith like)
Set threshold of supplies and power to jump to the next planet and hope for a better location.
