String is an Abstract Type and can therefor not be used as a Key. I dont know why but yeah the rules are the rules :D Oh and you should set your LookModes properly. The game is kinda bitchy about those.

I have done this in my Battlestations mod


Scribe_Collections.LookDictionary<KeyCode, Squad>(ref this.SquadKeys, "Squads",LookMode.Undefined,LookMode.Deep);




A dictionary is basically a List of Pairs and can be used just like a List but in the LookDictionary you can set the LookMode for Key and Value seperately.
