Ideas / Re: Electric Fence
August 24, 2014, 09:28:10 AM
Basic wooden fences would be neat, with more stuff like the electric (Or laser fences, let's go C&C style on em) for advanced defensive purposes.

Just the basic wooden fences alone would be good for containment purposes such as keeping crops protected from wandering wildlife or having somewhere to herd animals into (Also being able to actually herd animals would be a good feature). When a group of deer turn up right next to your colony, it can be a pain to get the resources out there to wall them off in enough time for them not to go wandering again.

I may just give this a try over the weekend, I'll let you know how it goes should I get the opportunity.

One hit lasts about an entire reload cycle for an EMP mortar which is about 60 seconds.

If they can take 2-3 hits, that's what, 2-3 minutes worth of stun to kill 4-6 Mechanoids?

With a little planning (Which you'd have time to do, being an AI core you choose when to pop it) you'd be able to get a firing squad together to rush in and rip them to bits after the first EMP goes off. Considering they are stunned, range won't be an issue so you can park right up in their faces and unload with whatever arms you have, so missing won't be an issue.

Seems like it'd work out. I'd have to try it to confirm though.

I imagine 2-3 EMP mortars would work wonders, as you could disable the Mechanoids which pop out and pull them to bits at your leisure.

I'd say just the one EMP mortar would do it, but... Accuracy. EMP grenades should also do it, provided you could find a way to throw one without getting either one-shotted or minced by the heavy weapons.

If you're lucky enough to have BOTH an EMP mortar and EMP grenades, dealing with an AI core would be exceptionally safe - Or so the theory goes.

I'm not sure if an EMP mortar hitting the AI core would trigger the spawn though, so you may have to get a standard mortar, a sniper or a sacrificial lamb to trigger the spawn before engaging stunlock mode on them.

Ideas / Re: Tone Down or remove Friendly Fire
August 17, 2014, 06:20:21 PM
Having your people refuse to fire when a friendly is directly between them and the target would be neat, but I really wouldn't want to see friendly fire removed entirely.

It'd also be good if a person could notice when they are in the field of fire of a friendly and promptly move themselves out of the way (If possible), and if pathing could be worked on to prefer walking behind friendlies rather than in front of them.

But seriously, if somebody walks out in front of a friendly whilst they are shooting, then they are asking for it. I've had a total of zero hunting accidents during my current playthrough (About 60 days so far) because I've always kept an eye on my hunters. You can afford to take your eyes off of your normal workers for a little while, but taking your eyes off stupid people shooting guns (Which is what your people are for the moment) sounds as silly as the friendly fire itself lol.

Just treat your guys as kids with guns and you should be fine tbh.

As a new player, this information has proved helpful.

Catching people in the open with your guys behind cover is about as pleasing as it gets, I've even managed to repel a fairly early pirate raid that had 2 Snipers and 4ish pistol/rifles in it thanks to the new system. I let the turrets play bait to the main force (Hadn't finished putting the killbox together, so the few turrets I had were pretty exposed) and sent my best shot with the Enfield around the side of a small cliff. I waited for the Snipers to fire, then popped to the side and had my 14 shooting lass (All she could do was shoot and social, pretty much everything else was incapable, lol) put a well aimed Enfield round through the first Sniper's eye. Second guy took a few more rounds due to bad rolls, but turrets played distraction long enough to pepper the bulk force with injuries and let me deal with the two Snipers.

After that, the main force was crippled enough to let my ragged band of pistols and Enfield make a mockery of them from safe cover, with the only casualty being a couple of replaceable turrets.

Also, bullets are not the only thing that carry death sentences. Beware the melee attacks.

Took my first prisoner and was busy carting them off to their make-shift cell. Something got me distracted, can't remember what, it was very early on during my Colony's life. However, I found out that that a few seconds of inattention is precisely how long it takes for your new 8 melee strength prisoner to crush the right eye and rip off the left ear of your best starting colonist.

And that is how Cat (Nicknamed her as such due to the fact that she could only kill pests and bug people - She was the earlier mentioned counter-sniper) found her way into my Colony, by ripping my best guy to bits. She's something of a mascot now, even though she spends most of her time wandering around aimlessly until there's hunting or wardening to be done...

General Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself!
August 16, 2014, 10:35:38 AM
Thought I'd start this right with an introductory post, so here ya go:

-What introduced you to RimWorld? Or to this style of game in general?

I was watching Yeti's (https://www.youtube.com/user/ClosetYeti) videos of Xenonauts and noticed he'd started up another game playthrough. Natural curiosity took over and I was hooked on the concept of Rimworld since I saw it, and Alpha 6 gave me the push over the edge to buy it. I do love me some hardcore games with real dangers. I've had a keen interest in this type of game for years but never really had the motivation to take any of them up until now.

-What's your favorite other game?

Anything that files under strategy or hardcore shooter these days, with my particular poison being Insurgency at the moment.

-Most embarrassing gaming-related story?

I'll go with a recent one since I've already mentioned Insurgency. Anybody that knows the game, knows it can be a little on the tense side, considering a stray bullet can have it's name on you at any given moment. Naturally, nerves are taut and reactions are itching. I carefully slice the pie on a corner and am immediately welcomed by a burst of rifle fire that has me diving back around the corner and reaching for a flashbang... Which in my panic, I botch. Instead of bouncing it around the corner it lands right back at my feet and the feet of my 3 buddies. The rest is history.

-What kind of breakfast cereal is the best?

Co-co pops, but I'm partial to Shreddies. Go go UK cereals!

No funny pictures for you, but I'm sure I'll share should that situation change. Hai guys!
