warm up = aim time
cool down = delay after attack before they can move or start another.

Don't know if there's any resources available on the topic.

As long as they are picking them back up to continue work they should complete no problem, editing bills with unfinished items may break them, still having issues with this. Easiest way I've found to test an unfinished item to see if it's busted is to:

draft all colonists so you can be sure the table is not in use
select the colonist that started the item in question, un-draft them
right click the unfinished item

If the only option showing is to haul it, it's likely broke.
It is usually possible to select the broken item and hit the 'cancel' option to recover some of the materials and get rid of the useless broken item.

Click with your mouse in the column with the numbers under 'drag to trade' and drag to the right to sell or left to buy the item in that row. Clicking anywhere else will have no effect. The most likely reason for the interface not being similar to screenshots you've seen is that it was recently redone.

The UI is functional, but still in progress =)

Honestly I find the most trouble with the excessive map sizes to be.. pawn travel time. "I started walking to this raid camp to loot after breakfast but now I'm really tired, hungry, and half way there" type issue >.>

Was this save made with mods installed? when removing a mod without starting a new save you're lucky if the save will load at all.

I've used notepad++ as well. It works about as well as programmer's notepad, just a matter of preference.

Any basic text editor can handle XML, including notepad. It's just a text file, it's the contents that make it XML. Though I'd personally recommend programmer's notepad for the color scheme and other features. (free, no hiding added crap software)

Edb's Prepare Carefully should fit your needs llunauk. I'd love to have a 'Pick 3' mode for colonist selection at start. Twenty people trying to scramble off the failing ship? I'll go with these three.

As for most annoying part? Crazy unlucky RNG. Four of your highly skilled snipers in excellent cover vs their 0 skill brawler and 2 skill trigger-happy fella standing in the open.. and three of yours get oneshot. Or 1/2 of your colonists cleaning up a previous raid, and mechanoid one drops in right between them and your base picking off the ones moving through before you can even move them out. A Little more warning would be nice, even if it was only 'incoming around here in 20 seconds'

Heart/liver infections I schedule the transplant as soon as the infection escalates. no waiting list. I always keep a couple of each on hand.
edit: oh, and fairly rare to be needed, maybe twice on average for longer games. Too often it's instant death with injuries that would require the transplant.
