Well actually it can be called "research" as a group of actions that you should do before you can actually build something. Like making calculations on, for example, fuel consumption of a generator, it's power output, figuring out how you can build it with materials and tools that you have, then making blueprints for those who will actually build it.

Essentially, this. People are approaching this from the early-civ game approach of literally-no-exposure-to-the-concept and research as a discovery process. It's not. It's more about engineering.

Alot of the things being built aren't even all that complex by modern standards, not to mention 3000 years from now. Alot of this is core-curriculum for general education, nevermind what actual engineers could pull off.

There is a PSA about meds and diseases. Use healroot.

As for the storytellers.. yeah. Randy beats Cassie by a mile in lategame. Cassie's late-game event que is just more and more headache until you leave the planet.

I found some jade on my map once. Sold alright. Not much else to do with it.

Any of these interesting suggestions will require a rework of the current literal gamble that is melee.

For many intents and purposes unconstructed walls count as full walls. They support roof, they block movement, they seem to have just as much HP, they have more beauty (0) than a rock wall (-2). I wonder if I could get away with hauling materials to construction zone and just leaving them there ! That's what the forbid button is for, isn't it ?

Mortars require math, not shooting skill. That isn't how you aim a mortar.
Are you saying colonists incapable of Intellectual shouldn't be able to use mortars ? Instead or in addition to incapable of violence ?

Sounds legit.

Depends. It's math, not rocket science. If a colonist knows the geometry to construct something, they know the geometry to aim a mortar. If they don't and they fire anyways, it'll work more or less the way mortars function now.

As so many times, with so many other things with arguments like this, reality makes this easier, not harder. Properly done, every mortar shot after the first should land closer to the target with a very small deviation around bullseye. Hell, I might actually consider using mortars then.

The important things are to keep a pair of toolbenches and many excess supplies for whatever you want to make. If you don't like savescumming, you'll need to pump out in bulk to get around the wide range of RNG that really shouldn't exist for skilled crafters.

I always build up emplacements around crashed ships. If it's close enough, turrets too. You have at least a few days before the effects start to get difficult. Should take one day at most to lay out wall/sandbag emplacements. Then give everyone a good night's rest and hit it in the morning.

..physical shields were long extinct and trashed, they wouldn't exist either way.

Except that this isn't true. Especially in modern times. You can't find a swat or riot team in the modern-most parts of the world that doesn't employ shields.

Another case of reality being unrealistic for some people.

And people who stick to defaults would lose colonists. In practice, no choice but to use it.

Do you lose colonists over this now? If so, you have other management issues.

It isn't that much more efficient, especially for something checked infrequently.

..For the same reason they sell everything else. May as well ask why they'd bother selling food or clothing in that case, the same reasoning applies.

Seriously, reality is too unrealistic for some people.

You're talking about statistical averages over long term with many iterations. I get that.

It's just.. nowhere near as simple as putting two snipers on it and calling it a day.

Power armor isn't everywhere either.

There is plenty of room and purpose for practical melee protections, especially since the means to get around them are infrequent.
