General Discussion / Re: Quick update
September 21, 2013, 04:40:13 PM
I like the idea of a Kickstarter campaign for Rimworld, but I was wondering if it was the good time to do it, especially since you don't have your graphic style yet. If it's a financial necessity that you grab a little money to be able to continue working on the project, I'd totally understand the early Kickstarter campaign, but if not, I would advise you to delay it, at least until it gets its own graphic identity. And you could use the time to further improve the game mechanics to provide during the Kickstarter campaign a more representative demo of what you want the game to look and feel.

700 people is already great, but I feel Rimworld could do more than that given its premises and the quality already achieved. A too early Kickstarter campaign will probably succeed, but I feel like it would yield substantially less money than with its very own graphic style.

Perhaps OP should edit the OP so that all the reviews are in one place at the start of the thread.
Good catch, I just did it for clarity.

General Discussion / Re: Game price?

This game will fund your next assuming you do it right.

The problem with a kickstarted game is that the game has to fund itself before being able to fun the next one. In a more conventionally funded environment, investors put money up front into the making of a game. When the game is released, the studio has already been paid in full, so the price tag is divided between the investors' cut and the funding of the next game.

In a crowdfunded environment, a lot of the future potential customers a regular game would have targeted have already paid their fair share even before the game is out. And the amount paid by the backers are divided between the price of their reward (especially physical one that can eat up amount backed fast) and funding the current game. It is a double-edged sword : the studio gets money faster they don't own to anyone but themselves, but it is also money that won't be available for the next game, which will probably also need to be crowdfunded.

Just my 2 cents here, whatever the funding model, the follwing stands true :

But it is a very hard balance to achieve no matter what. Because it is very difficult to estimate how much the market will bare.

Screenshots: I have better resolution/quality ones, but the 128kB limit on upload has me going through image-manipulation hoops to show as much as I want with the best quality possible.

Graves: It's about a third of the whole graveyard. Only foolish raiders are buried there. They may have been foolish, but they were human nonetheless. There should be a muffalo or two, also.

Batteries: Before you make anything more flammable, first add fire extinguishers. Pretty please? I couldn't help to see that current batteries efficiency is maxed at 50%, is it a scheduled future research path?

Fourth Story

This is the story of Watts. Coming for a long ancestry of noble military officers, he naturally took in charge the small colony leadership. His wits and social abilities quickly made forget his attitude towards menial tasks that he would never do. Inspired by its military training, he conceived the colony as a fortress, giving as little chance to any hostile to get a shot at his fellow colonists.

He also took in charge the recruiting process, quickly turning raging raiders into useful workers to compensate his own disregard for manual tasks. The colony grew as fast as the hydroponic potato plants did, exchanging the freedom of slaves offered by passing slave traders for crops.

Excerpt from his journal :

"Practically speaking, a rock-dug colony is the best for defense, but it has a high energy overhead cost for all the lighting. This requires more generators and more batteries, negating the resource gain of not having to build walls. Also, since there's no wall to pass wires in, there's electrical conduits everywhere, making it very dangerous for small children and squirrels alike."

Ideas / Re: Captain's log

I can't speak for Tynan as I never had to code with Unity, but if sharing is too complicated to code, allowing people to write their own captain's log inside the game makes no sense anymore. Exporting a game-generated captain's log would still be interesting.

Will space booze increase Tynan productivity? :o

For me, the important thing is not if players will be able to edit their own log, but how they'll be able to put them in front of other people. I like the Steam way of allowing people to share guides on any games via the Steam interface. If user-written captain's log are available, they should be shared with the other players in a central place in the game interface.

If Tynan doesn't want them, I would be interested by the MTG cards, thanks. ;D

The question with Greenlight is usually not if a game will pass or not if it's reasonably backed, but when will it pass. Valve is very clear about your current ranking, backing-wise, but it's a little more foggy about when the next batch will be published, and what games will be included in. I'm hoping the best for Rimworld, though, and I'll be sure to back it when it will be available on Greenlight :)

Glad to hear it, it's been a while since I played it. I'm waiting for the full version now, there is already enough people testing it and I contributed my fair share :)

At least it's nice to see that people are already enjoying the game as it is right now :)
