General Discussion / Re: info please
October 24, 2014, 06:54:07 AM
I'd be willing to bet Tynan got some plans for it, but it probably won't be a priority for a while. It's like how it's with Dwarf Fortress, despite many many years of development, outside having a map where you can place several colonies at - which is also the only use it has now in Rimworld - it has yet to have any direct use in fortress mode. In the future Dwarf Fortress will allow you to send armies across the map, so we can only speculate if Rimworld will end up having something similar.

One thing Dwarf Fortress does have though is map features that affect your fortress if you place it too close to it. That's not heavily used in DF though, but could be a more cheap way of spicing up the map in the short term for Rimworld. For starts, the distance between the colony and other factions could determine raid/visiting rate, and also if non-pirate factions would be hostile or not (like if you are too close to their territory). But yeah, my point is, the map isn't as useless as it might seem initially, there's a lot Tynan can do with it down the road.

General Discussion / Re: alpha 2,3 and 4 help

The later versions are far more optimized than the earlier ones, so I dunno if you will get any better compatibility with them really... o_O However, I suggest you ask Tynan directly as I think distributing the game over the forum, even if it's by PM, isn't really permitted.

Worth noting that the Power Claw and Scyther Protrusion Knife can only replace lost hands, if you lose a whole arm you have to get a bionic arm.

Off-Topic / Re: Cats... Should I get one?
October 22, 2014, 03:28:43 PM
As a cat owner of two cats I must say I disagree with some of the things said here.

Fur is only an issue with some cat races, not all. It is a good idea to check that up before getting one. There's even long haired cats with very easily maintained fur; for example a Norwegian Forest Cat has a thick and long fur that is surprisingly easy to maintain - I only brush mine a few times a month. That race also shed hair mostly in big dots at a time, rather than individual hairs that ends up filling the air.

Also, you don't need to clip their claws, they maintain that fine on their own if you give them proper scratching posts and such. I only clipped my cats claws before they where 2 years old as part of the process of teaching them not to scratch other people and regular furniture - just a bit of the the claw tips after they done any of those bad things; they are some of the most behaved cats you can imagine as a result now.

Liter can be a problem, and liter boxes is the easiest solution to that, but also the most expensive and wasteful so I thought I'd mention that cats can be toilet-trained differently. My cats have no liter box during summer and go outside instead then, which came very natural for them - they immediately asked to be let out the first time they noticed their sandbox was empty, lol. It's also possible to teach your cats to use the toilet or something if you have patience for that. I've been trying to make mine use the utility sink, which has been somewhat successful with one so far.

Cats are best kept indoors though, so don't worry if you end up in a situation which demands that from them; a dedicated outdoor-cat live on average only to the age of 7, while and indoor cat can live as much as 15 years. Personally I practice a balance, where they are mostly indoor during winter, and free to chose during summer.

Food is easy to deal with and can be set up to give minimal work. For the dry fodder I use a dispenser that is available 24/7, and I give them wet fodder whenever I prepare dinner for myself. None of my cats are fat, that they can eat when they want themselves makes it so that they don't feel stressed about having to eat - cats aren't like dogs that are constantly hungry, and are therefore capable of limiting their food intake according to their actual need. Cats are individuals though, so some may love food a bit more than what's good for them, learn to know your cat and see what works best for him/her.

With that said, getting a pet when you've yet to settle for yourself can be troublesome as everything becomes uncertain. It would been nice if your parents could reassure you that they could take temporarily care of the cat for you in periods where you might get problems finding adequate living situations or have financial issues - even though a cat isn't too expensive beyond the initial investment. Put aside a small deposit and you won't have to worry about not having enough for the vet if a situation comes up.

Felt this fitting to my feelings on the subject

Not to be completely humorless, but the stereotype that cats are lazy, arrogant, selfish etc. is in many cases untrue, cats care a lot if you earned their respect, and they notice when a person is sad or upset.

It's not without reason some cats are employed as therapy cats in various institutions - so no, cat's aren't useless.

depression in 19 years?

you should not get any pets, they will suffer.

That's to be blunt, a bit ignorant to assume, particularly because it's largely based on stigma rather than reality. Depression comes in many forms according to the various underlying causes, and in many of those cases getting responsibility for something actually helps with depression.

Also, it's unfortunately very common to have depression in that age because of an increasingly competitive society, and he's even taking an education that is known to have immense pressure. So personally I'm not surprised. If he's able to keep up with that kind of studies he's easily able to take care of a cat too. And it would provide something entertaining and meaningful in an otherwise monotonous day. It's a great idea imo.

General Discussion / Re: How do I start trading

You click on the number under the "drag to trade" column, on the row for the desired item. Then you drag left to buy and right to sell.

Tynan been talking about allowing version selection somehow though, possibly through the Ludeon Launcher he is working on right now, but I honestly kinda doubt this option will be available initially as he seem to be having enough trouble as it is this time around with the "basics". If I am to guess we're going to get a bare-bone launcher to begin with that have an auto-updater of some kind, then more features will be added up towards the steam release.

That depends on what type of game you want to play. If you want an increasingly challenging game that forces an endgame, either by loss or escape from the planet, stick to Cassandra. If you want to focus on just building your dream base, chose Phoebe. If you want a linear challenge that allows you to play without necessarily having to worry about an endgame, then go for Randy.

I dunno if the trader problem might be related to Cassandra, she tend to get more stingy and cruel over time I hear. I've been playing on Randy only since like A2, and I still don't have any issues with lack of traders by year 4 of my last colony.

Bugs / Re: [W | 0.7.584] Save Bug

A majority of those errors are related to missing content from mods, I would guess your issue could then be related to either corrupt, or wrongly/partly removed mods. Could that be plausible?

Having barely no space in the C disk is a problem, I dunno if it's related to the Rimworld issue though, but it's definitively possible as it's a potential issue for your whole computer. Your OS need working space, just saying.

Does the problem keep occurring if you try to make new worlds?

General Discussion / Re: I.. wha-.. D:

I personally think that:

  • The skill degradation should be slower
  • It should be at least a days delay since last activity with the skill before the skill starts degrading
  • If a skill delevels you get EXP bonuses up to the highest level the character reached in the skill, making it easier to regain the lost skill levels - because really, relearning/remembering shouldn't be the same as learning something from scratch. The bonus can be affected by the characters consciousness though, can't expect someone with a brain injury to remember stuff well.
I think these points would make the skill degradation more realistic and less frustrating imo, and I would actually then not mind if the skill degradation was active for all levels - though then preferably also with a delevel threshold from highest level reached (for example if character hit level 12, he can't delevel further than level 7 if the delevel threshold is -5).

Dunno about any mods for this, but I feel your frustration about the mountain stuff; however, I think removing overhead mountains would be too "convenient" a feature for the vanilla game, but it would have been nice to at least be able to remove the thin rock roofs without having to collapse it by mining deep enough.

Get food, power, trade and lodging needs covered fast, it's better to set up several temporary solutions than delay them until you mined out, days later, that grand dinning hall you want in the middle of the mountain (speaking from experience, lol). You shouldn't delay too long with any defense measures either. Getting cotton production going early will also help kickstart your economy.
