General Discussion / Re: RimWorld Lore Discussion!

Simple.  You only ever call them to trade.

Tynan also had a rather clever quote at one time regarding African fishing trawlers and a ride to Los Angeles as well.

Though I'd wager that the type of person that would routinely plough the path between the stars is likely not the most social individual.

"Damn it! I hate being woken within a couple lightyears of a Damn Rimworld.  The Damn AI blasts the local excuse for music at full volume all the time!

Salawat thats a beautiful cure! So wheelchairs and traction benches! Though the idea of rngeesus killing our pawns on that surgery roll puts a.... messy.... image in my head....

The surgery system is alreasy...cough...on Tynan's operating table... so to speak.  And again, those types of fractures ARE difficult both to manufacture and corrrct.

And it does feel right for the setting too... because bone doxtors.  Yeesh.

This is one of those injuries that really makes me wish Traction Benches were in the game.

Basic treatment basically looks like:

A) Diagnose/treat immediate bleeding.
B) Evaluate nature of fracture.
C) Assemble bracing to orient pelvic remnants
D) immobilize patient and track progress of bone knitting.
E) Physical therapy to deal with any resulting muscle atrophy.

I imagine it could be treated similar to a long running surgery job...  or a surgery that as a result schedules a followup in some period of time to represent the adjusting of the bracing weights and what not.

Bone medicine, as it turns out, is still the most horrifying type of medicine I can contemplate.  There is just something about bones that makes me wince just thinking about it.

Blood?  Gore?  No problem.  Bones?  <cringes>

I mentioned this elsewhere, but the real world solution to this kind of injury (and shattered spine as well) involves the use of a traction bench.

You immobilize the patient in such a way as to allow the bones to knit and rejoin.  This typically requires some really clever rigging since you basically have to avoid having the body's weight supported by the injured area.

The patient is basically monitored regularly to adjust their position as necessary and to check on the progress of the bone mending.

Complications include bed sores, muscle atrophy, and internal bleeding.  Spinal injuries tend to be even dicier.

I constantly forget that the TV is a joy item as well. It seems so out of place in the game. Oh hey, we are all struggling to eat but don't forget about getting a TV.

A book shelf would be a lot more appropriate.

On that - why is anyone broadcasting? Broadcasting costs time and effort. Its not like there is a CocaCola company to chip in a few million bucks of advertisement money to make it worth wild. At best you are just broadcasting your location in a world of people that eat people. I'd put that time and effort into... not dying I guess?

...That seems a little silly.  The father of electronic television was a farmer.  (Though he regretted how the technology was eventually employed).

Get any group of people in a livable situation, and somebody is going to chase a half-baked dream.  Whether it be the rediscovery of the art of broadcasting, or being an admired celebrity personality.

You say you need corporate backers?  Pah!  You have a bunch of folks with drugs, skills, and large periods of time to fill.  The goal of most human life is not simply to survive at all costs...  We tend to value the ability to thrive (live comfortably) over mere survival.  If that wasn't so, we'd have colonized the Moon in the 70's.

This is another on of those things that I think individually is just a bit grating, but its the larger picture that is the real issue.

The game has no direction. Pawns are refereed to as both colonist and survivors - those are 2 completely different situations with a completely different need and want tree. Colonists would build art and TV. Survivors stop at nothing to escape. Its it Space Western inspired or not?  Is there futuristic tech or not?

It's not either/or.  Is there a stage of development in a colony where it's definitely low on the priority list?  He'll yeah!  It doesn't mean you'll have the entire bloody planet in that same state at the same time though.  Not EVERYONE is out to kill and eat you.  In fact quite the opposite.

Just like in real life really
