Ideas / DOGGIES!
May 12, 2014, 10:00:09 PM
I don't know if this has been suggested before, but maybe add doggies to the game? Either have wild dogs that you can domesticate or have... pet store ships or something?
Potential ways doggies could benefit the game:
They could drive away other animals who try to eat your food- SQUIRREL!
They could give happiness boosts to your colonists- Puppy! :3
They could hunt other animals, or act as attack dogs for raids

Maybe there could even be super badaxe direw-DOGS that would be really good at killing people, or maybe be able to train dogs so well that they could do jobs like hauling things or tending to other domesticated animals (when they are introduced) after a long period of time.

Ideas / Earthquakes?
May 12, 2014, 09:42:23 AM
So we all know that if you make your colony in a mountain, you are basically invulnerable. Raiders can do nothing to you if you make a decent entryway. However, what if there was something that would give you a reason to build your base aboveground? What if there was a natural disaster that could cripple your mountain base but do almost nothing to your aboveground base?

I'm thinking earthquakes. They would happen randomly, probably once every month or few months or something, and they would cause roof sections on your base to collapse, and somethimes crumble stone, metal, or wood supports.

Imagine, having an earthquake happen during a raid. The roof would collapse on the raiders, crushing them, but the roof would also collapse on the beds and the entryway, trapping your colonists in their rocky tombs, until they mined it out again.

General Discussion / When should i start over?
April 30, 2014, 05:19:19 PM
I have a question, and i think i need guidance:

if my colony dies, should i always just start over from the beginning? it seems like a waste to me though, especially if i put a lot of time and effort into the game, only to have it all thrown out the window.

or should i use the "three strikes you're out" policy where if the colony dies three times its over?

or should i replay the colony dying and see if there was any way it could have survived, and then go from there?

or should i just reload the save whenever the colony dies and it doesnt really matter?

im not sure which one of these i should choose.

Ideas / Spaceships?
April 29, 2014, 04:46:25 PM
I know this topic has been brought up before, and probably is never going to happen in the real game, but what about this:

What if it were a mod? Something like the early game prototype Starship Architect, but with textures that look more like the normal game, and other ships and crew that would belong to different factions?

Maybe it could be something like this:

when the massive passenger ship exploded, instead of using the escape pods, three daring crew members boarded the rescue shuttle and flew away just before the ship exploded. The interplanetary drive was damaged, but luckily there's some construction gear stowed away on the shuttle.

So basically you'd be orbiting Rimworld in a dinky shuttle with three crew and no way to get back to civilization... yet.

You could pilot the shuttle to other areas in rimworld's orbit, and engage with other ships on the way, and eventually get the means to travel back home.

there could be different enemies, friends, and events you would encounter in different areas. Say a pirate ship rams into you and tries to send raiders in spacesuits into your ship, or a trade ship drops into the system from warp and you get to choose between trading with them or trying to attack them and steal their interplanetary drive, or an angry space kraken tries to destroy your ship and eat your crew. Maybe you could even communicate with colonies on the surface, or drop some of your crew down on to the surface.

The game wouldn't be totally converted from the original rimworld. The building system would still be the same, and you could still build and use almost all of the buildings in the game (research table, comms console, solar panels, etc.). However your base would move, and would require energy to do so, and your characters couldn't really go outside it without a spacesuit.

What do you think? Do you think this is a good idea? Do you think it's a horrible idea? Do you think you want it so much that you'd be willing to teach me C# so i can make this a real mod? Please let me know!

Stories / SUCH MISERABLE LUCK!
April 28, 2014, 07:31:12 PM
I start a new colony.  I made sure to pick out really good guys so that the beginning colony would be the most productive. It's only day three and everything is going great- we have solar panels feeding to sun lamps in the growing area and a room for cooking and later researching.

everything is going great until randy decides to throw a curve ball in my plan. SIX tribal raiders come from across the plains and start attacking immediately. I'm thinking "DARN IT RANDY!" but i decide "ok Randy, i'll play your little 'game' ". The odds are only 2:1. i can maybe pull this off. My guys retrieve their firearms and go behind some rocks for cover. soon the raiders are on top of them. Five of them swarm around my sniper, hitting him with rocks from all angles while he poorly tries to hit them. Then i remember: "oh yeah, he has 13 melee!" and i make him charge at the closest raider. He nearly kills the raider before the barrage of rocks makes him fall on the floor, incapacitated. My other guys are in cover and practically unscathed, and they manage to kill two raiders and incapacitate two more. At this point the tribesmen decide that they've had enough and start to retreat, and one guy throws a final stone before running off like a sissy. At this point the only person who's not incapacitated is Lexi the scientist. Ok, that's not too bad. i can doctor the two incapacitated colonists and get them back to full health, and i can later recruit the two prisoners by converting the kitchen into a jailhouse. However just as i am about to get Lexi to rescue the incapacitated colonists, the last stone the raider threw hits her on the head and incapacitates her.

I have a mod. It's almost finished. It adds a few more guns into the game. I was thinking of releasing it. I'm just wondering what i need to publish it. Do i need a source code or a change log or some type of accreditation or something, or can i just compress the file and put a download link through google drive, and post it in here along with a little description?

THANKS A BUNCH! :)

Ideas / YAAAAAAAAY! 8D (I think)
April 24, 2014, 08:14:13 PM
Just read the changelog today. Saw this:

April 23
Started designing and implementing region graph to be used for reachability determination, hierarchical pathfinding, room finding, danger detection and spatial markup, closest-object search, and potentially other purposes. This is a major project.

and this:

April 24
Got region graph working in first version with regions linked by portals and edge spans. Needs optimization and integration into various specific problem solutions.

Correct me if i'm wrong, bu this looks an awful lot like an idea i suggested in the past:

SECTORS!

Basically, i think there are going to be other playing fields like the one we all play in now, but they will be connected at the edges and people can travel between them!

YAY!

(not sure if this is really what it means though)

Day 058:

Today my whole world fell apart.

It was just meant to be a normal raid. Same old hide behind the sandbags and pick 'em off when they get too close. It was always flawless, an' I always loved it. When i rushed into the gauntlet (that's what i call the big entrance room with turrets everywhere) with the other colonists, the old hooligans from the town Desert Strength came by. They weren't our friends, but they hated the raiders as much as we did, an' they figured they'd help us and get some fresh heads for their trophy collections. However, when i got to my position, the guy in charge, Shrike, i think her name was, told everyone to quickly go to the back door. I was suspicious about why she'd tell us to go to the back door. Someone had bolted it up. There was no way anyone would get through, if they even noticed it. I stayed with the hooligans an' picked off the raiders. Strange, i thought there'd be more of them. Then i heard an explosion, and a bunch of gunshots coming from the back door. I waited 'till the gunshots subsided. I don't know why. It was the worst mistake i could make. When i came to my senses and charged to the back door, there were raiders all over the colony! I got slugged in the shoulder a couple of times, but i didn't even notice. As i wheeled around the corner, i saw the twisted husk of an autoturret, an' the back door was busted open.

An' it hadn't been bolted shut.

all my friends. Lying on the floor. Dead. Well, Wheatles an' Murray weren't completely dead, but they were bleedin' out pretty bad. I tried to carry Murray back to the beds, where She'd be safe.

She died in my arms.

On my way back, i picked off a couple of raiders with my pump shotgun. Made sure i could see the whites of their eyes before i splattered their brains on the walls. The randomly placed anti-drop pod turrets picked off a few more, before they exploded. I carried Wheatles back to his bed, then i killed as many raiders as i could. I even knocked one unconscious an' captured him. Eventually the sight of their dead friends made them sick enough to leave, an' i walked back to the beds. Alone. I was the last one.

Day 059:

I woke to the sound of an explosion. It was one of the Autoturrets blowin' up at the gauntlet. Two more raiders had shown up overnight. Came back to finish the job, eh? Good thing i left the autoturrets on overnight.

I went to check on the soldier i had captured. Found him dead on the bed. Must've slit his wrists overnight. Then i went to check on Wheatles. He's not doin' too good. Still hasn't woken up, an' i don't now how to feed him when he's asleep. I wish i was a doctor. Then i could fix him up. But i'm not a doctor. Heck, i can't even put on a friggin' band aid! There's also another prisoner from before. He kept askin' me what happened last night. Darn it, i wish i could talk to people, an' i wasn't so friggin' shy.

I can't mend Wheatles, an' i can't recruit the prisoner. Soon they'll both die. I guess i really am all alone.

I'm all alone.

Ideas / Sectors!
March 19, 2014, 04:10:17 PM
I don't know about anyone else, but having only a 200m x 200m space to build a prospering colony seems a little small to me. I think that the game should give you more room to expand and explore. maybe to go on expeditions or find ruins or other colonies or something! but with the current land sizes, and the fact that expanding them lead to MASSIVE performance issues, might i suggest something else:

Sectors!

Maybe the world could be cut into little square chunks the size of the normal playing area, or maybe even smaller. People could travel across the borders to different sectors, but a sector would only register if you were playing in it. Sectors could start out as unknown, and you would have to send a person to explore them. perhaps they could find old ruins, or crashed spaceships, or entire colonies that belonged to other factions.

in my opinion, this would open the doors to many different things, like scouts, vehicles, other factions to negotiate with, taking over bases, and other stuff that you can probably think of but i cant!

I don't know if this idea makes sense, but i think it would be really cool! :)

Ideas / SCHYTHERS!
March 16, 2014, 12:26:58 PM
I was browsing through the list of raiders, you know, trying to find something to mod, when i came across this class of raider called the "Schyther". Apparently they're these mechanoid raiders with MINIGUNS and something like 350 health.

So basically a massive freaking terminator.

TYNAN I KNOW WHAT YOURE UP TO. PLEASE add these in alpha 3! They sound so amazing!

Help / How do i edit an XML file?
March 15, 2014, 05:30:31 PM
I'm sorry, i know this sounds like a stupid question, but how do i edit an XML file? I want to create my own mod, and i got as far as opening the XML file i wanted to modify on the internet, but i can't seem to be able to edit it. do i need to download something?
