The only thing a shield would do verse a firearm, is break your wrist and forearm, if the shield didn't fail. Because the shield would probably fail, and you would get shot through and die.

The tribals should bring them to bear, with an assumption of lack of understanding of how pointless they are.

Hmm your point about firearms pretty much kills the appeal of real shields for me.

But, shields would still be quite useful in melee combat, and you can make shields work against firearms. I think a kevlar shield would not be so bad.

We mustn't forget plasteel shields as well. They could be able to stop firearms.

General Discussion / the hidden message
June 24, 2015, 01:48:18 PM
has anybody else noticed that pacifist colonists tend to have really high stats in important things like growing or socialness?

Maybe it's a hidden message... perhaps if we become passive and stop fighting n stuff, we'll excel as well... i dunno. What do you think?

lots of high tech stuff. This is 3500 years in the future, and i want it to show. futuristic weapons and equipment! Scifi artifacts with profound abilities! Visits from transcendents with incomprehendable power!

that would be fun! :)

Ideas / Re: Sun Lamps power off at night

YESSS!

Alternatively you can separate two solar panels from your power grid and use them to power a sun lamp. Power shuts off at night, so does the lamp. :)

This is so funny and sad and beautiful!

If this forum had reputation, i'd rep everyone here to the end of the universe!

Also this is REALLY good art.

Adding shields (made of wood and metal and plasteel) would be a cool addition to the game, and could compliment futuristic personal shields quite nicely. After all, meleers in the old days had shields of wood and metal, and personal shields are quite expensive for every single low-life sword raider to have one.

Within a week almost everything on the map had been hauled. Jimmy, with the help of other colonists, had constructed more carts. He had even constructed these four-wheeled platforms for joy and fast transportation, which he had called "Skateboards".

Jimmy was presenting his crazy new idea to the group during a meeting.
"...and with these long-range electric carts, we could gather more minerals, travel to other factions, maybe even find a way off this planet." Jimmy concluded
Murmurs arose from the group
"Do we even have the materials to do this?" asked a skeptic colonist.
"it would take a lot of metal and stored food, but with what we have, we could make it hundreds of miles." Jimmy answered.
More murmurs
"What about the human cost?" said Tynan, walking confidently to the front. "What about the dangers of sending colonists blindly out into the wilderness?"
"Well, we could send a robot"
"And risk a perfectly good AI core? No, this would take way too many resources to make, with little benefit to our experience in this colony."
"What do you mean?" Said jimmy. "We've spent years on this rock. Do you really expect us to make antimatter drives with our bare hands? This is the only feasible way to expand out and get out of here!"
"And what makes you so sure that we'd even find help here?" said Tynan defiantly and awesomely. "Think of all the things we could do instead of this!"
"We could expand our relationships!" said one colonist gleefully
"We could search for a water supply!" said another
"We could make babies!" Said another. Everybody looked at him quizically. He shrank back in his seat.
"That's actually not a bad idea..." a guy beside him said.
"Guys? Seriously!?" said Jimmy, annoyed and amazed.
"Then it's settled. We're not going out there!" Tynan said, to cheers.
Jimmy stormed out, frustrated and devastated that his idea had failed.

The next day, Tail came back from her haul with a strange amulet.
"What is it?" asked Reed.
"I don't know." Explained tail. "I found it out by a pirate ruin. it looks wierd doesn't it?"
"It sure does" agreed Reed.
Suddenly, a purple beam of light shot out from the amulet, and thrust itself upwards into the sky, where it formed into a strange symbol.
"I hope that wasn't bad..." Said Tail.

Jimmy strained when he hauled the pile of stones. The sweat on his forehead quickly evaporated into the arid shrubland air. He lost his balance, and the stones came tumbling out of his arms. Four round stones formed a rectangle shape as they rolled across the ground in unison.

That was it! Jimmy had a great idea! He couldn't believe he hadn't thought of it before! Oh, thank the void gods! He gathered up as many stones as he could and quickly stauntered back to camp.

Reed opened Jimmy's bedroom door. "Jimmy," he asked, "you missed dinner today. And i haven't seen you in the rec room for days. Is something wrong?"
Jimmy was hunched over tinkering at something. beside him was something large and concealed beneath a blanket. "Everything's fine, Reed. Everything's way more than fine." jimmy said proudly.
"Uh, what's that under the blanket?" Reed asked.
"I think you'll like it. Presenting..." Said Jimmy. he tore off the blanket. In truth, what was under it wasn't really worth putting a blanket over. It was a rickety person-drawn cart made of wood and metal.
"...the best way to haul things!" Jimmy beamed. Other colonists were stopping to look at it.
"So this is what you spent our colony's valuable wood and metal on?" Tynan said skeptically.
"Trust me, it's worth it. I'll prove it to you during hauling duty tomorrow." Jimmy said.

Ideas / Spread Dirt order
June 20, 2015, 04:33:00 PM
Got the idea from the book The Martian, when Mark Watney makes growable soil out of martian dust by mixing it with earth dirt and feces.

Why can't our colonists do this? Break up a small layer of stone with their mining skills, then mix the stone chunks with some dirt and poo and make a tile of farmable soil? It would be a great feature for mountain or icesheet bases instead of immediately resorting to overpriced hydroponics basins.

just a thought :)

If our colonists can make auto-targeting rapid-fire gun turrets and comms consoles that can communicate with spaceships in orbit, surely they can make a telly. Or grow cocoa and make it into chocolate.

Just a thought.

Here's two for you. I know it's kind of poor quality, but i'm getting better...

Centipede in desert with inferno cannon.

Little dark i know. Whoops. It's a scyther in the rain at night. When i first read about scythers and charge lances i thought they'd be these mechanical dogs with actual charged lances that basically instakill people. Guess i was wrong...

I really like this idea! And to make it more realistic, perhaps it could take them double the time to get over debris or sandbags.

However, for some reason this game is forbidden to have wheels in it, so i don't think it's going to happen. :(

General Discussion / Rimworld now or later?
May 30, 2015, 11:51:54 AM
I have not played any of alpha 10 (i know, right?). I haven't even downloaded it. And now i'm starting to get a hankering for rimworld.

However, based on the changelog, it looks like alpha 11 should come fairly soon, So i'm torn. Should i download a10 and play it now, or just wait a couple days and play a11?

Plz help me decide :)

step 1: Draft the unwanted one
step 2: send them to the far edge of the map
step 3: if they try to come back after 6 hours, draft them again.
step 4: wait
step 5: PROFIT!

alternate method:

step 1: draft the unwanted one
step 2: send them to wherever you keep the dead bodies
step 3: give them a good long look
step 4: wait
step 5: PROFIT!

they'll mental break this way

I struggle through snow.
Wind whips my face as i dig
a grave for my friend.

As i bury my
spade in the earth a thought
persists in my head:

Why is it that the
good ones of us are always
the ones who die first.

I want to kill them.
I want to kill them in ways
that would make hell weep.

But if i did that,
i'd be no better than them.
We'd both deserve death.

No, it's honour that
fuels the raging flame of hope
and lights this dark world.
