Hello,

I'll get straight to the point:

my CPU can't handle the huge raids the game throws at me anymore, so...

1) is there anything in the dev tool that would allow me to decrease size of raids (and manhunter pakcs and everything else) and maybe instead increase the difficulty of each unit, instead of just throwing more units at me?

2) i play on randy random extreme, is there any way you guys could suggest to decrease my wealth, so maybe the raids get smaller again? would that even work?

Ideas / request: raid scaling properly with user CPU
November 26, 2015, 07:51:20 AM
Hello,

so, I have an older PC. even tho many components are updated and have been switched out for newer models, the mainboard and CPU are 6y old (i7 920)

the problem I personally have, is that late in the game, raids are insanely huge. manhunter packs even worse.
this renders the game totally unplayable on my machine, application freezes, everything goes at 0,00000001 speed until half the raiders have been killed.

so my request and suggestion is that either the game itself detect what your computer can actually handle and downscale stuff, or have a slider option somewhere to to it manually.

also: it would be extremely helpful in this case, if instead of 100 raiders everytime, it would just be 25 raiders, but super strong. (apply same to mechanoids, manhunter pakcs, etc.)
instead of just getting harder through increasing numbers... make every unit harder and have less units. this would solve the problem on older CPUs and keep the game fun and challenging.

Maybe the code doesnt require the roosters to be with the hens, just that you have both in the colony and occasionally the fertilization event fires.  That would be a much easier way of programming it than having them find each other.
i don't think it works that way, otherwise i would have 200 fertilized eggs every single day

EDIT: i have figured out what happens in my case (as i do have roosters on the map)

sometimes a hen or rooster will get confused and wander around regardless of zone setting. and then: SURPRISE SEX and fertilized hen xD

General Discussion / Re: Disabled Thrumbo

about thrumbo horns:

1) they are superior t omany other weapons, but you can still craft better masterwork items with better DPS

2) if you don't have 101% good mood going on in your colony, i suggest brawlers "parking" their weapons in a shelf when not needed, because a berserk brawler with a too good weapon (like thrumbo horn) can kill another colonist way too easy... or at least cause some severe injuries

3) also careful on progressive storytellers like cassandra... an early game thrumbo kill will result in a spike in your wealth, meaning a spike in difficulty that is hard (or impossible) to lower again. i have seen many streamers kill a thrumbo early on and then getting pwned by huge raids when they still just had 3-4 guys and a turret

and now, back to topic:
i have downed thrumbos a lot. and many times did i try to heal them and tame them (lvl20 medic and tamer) without success... not just because taming is so hard, but because in order to down a thrumbo you have to hurt it a lot. and it takes a lot of time to heal it. most of the times, thrumbos i have captured have died of infection, even tho i had 2 lvl20 healers nonstop and glitterworld medicine assigned to them. also: you have to micromanage to switch your healers, because it needs so many hours to heal a thrumbo that your medics might collapse of exhaustion and then have a bad mood.

also: do they eat anything apart from trees? coz EFF THAT SH*T xD

You have 60 hens - did you go through each individually to double-check the zoning is correct?
yes, as you can see (not all chicken fit onto one screen tho)

year 5513 i haven't seen any wild rooster or any other bird animal in my current map

my 60 hens are in one room far away from my 10 roosters

and yet... from time to time the hens get fertilized somehow...

How about a biodome?

One downside is that this uses a lot of power.
biodomes or similar are way more efficient powerwise than hydroponics AND are immune to loss of crops due solar flares.

i take biodomes over any other ingame solution right now. any day, any time. and if made over rich soil, even more so.

I have chickens myself but not sure if a hoard of chickens or squirrels would be better for a zerg army, Squirrel Girl meme withstanding.
assuming you don't waste time training and just just set them to a proper zone to life there and distract raiders, squirrels or tortoises are the best IIRC. squirrels are hard to hit and turtles have lots of HP and actually hit harder than you would think.

problem with this are AOE attacks.

i'd never use chickens for that, they are way too valuable to me as food source as eggs can be used to cook lavish meals.

sure, but now consider (though its less likely to be able to easily be fit into your graphs) cooking time/effort.
if he has to consider that, you need to consider the increment of time/effort on HARVESTING and HAULING on huge fields.

plus: bigger fields, more stuff will be set on fire by raiders. that equals even more time on putting out fires

it takes very little time for my 2 day cooks and 2 night cooks to go from 0 to 300 normal, 150 nice and 100 lavish meals, provided there are materials
it does take forever to harvest and haul huge fields tho.

also, a colonist eating a lavish meal, won't be hungry for a good while AND have a mood bonus.
lavish meals can be made out of veggies and eggs, which can easily be grown in any biome either outdoors or indoors or with hydroponics.

i see no reason WHATSOEVER to eat anything raw on purpose.

yepp, i call that "cooling tower" and i use that too, but just because i like the looks :D

my outside bases usually have large walls surrounding the whole area, so raiders get rarely to my fridge. even if they drop on top of me, they usually go for animals and crops first for some reason. hence while a squirrel army is so good to have, while your turrets and colonists rip them apart :)

and thats why you make battery rooms with smaller amount than that xD

General Discussion / Re: Is there a steam price yet?

i've always said $30 bucks for this title is a bit steep.

dwarven fortress costs less. cities skylines costs less. many huge AAA titles cost around the same. and then there is EA with SW:battlefront and their DLC ripoffs xDDDD

i think $20 is more reasonable for this particular game. but $30 ain't too bad either. i spend $30 on worse crap many times, so...

5 is way too high, you can easily spend upwards of 600 on a decent size room. Fine if it's stone but a colony can crumble without steel!
then don't build steel floors if you can't afford it?

for starters i never build steel floors because i would not do that IRL either. one flashstorm next to your base and all your colonists electrified? i know this doesn't happen ingame, but that's the reason i'd never use steel for floors.

other than that, IF i would use steel floors, it would be after many years, when there's really nothing else you can do with all the silver. before that, steel is needed for important stuff like cooking table, turrets, electric wiring. why on earth would i want to use it for floors?

@METATERREN
most (or all?) animals can eat cooked meals. if you have problems with your crops, but you have other ways to get what you need to cook, you can feed that to them.

other than that, i'll just say you shouldn't over breed if you can't feed all those animals.

also: it might be good to just breed animals that actually do something apart from eating all your food and sometimes end up on your cooking table. ex: i breed wild boars: easy to tame, can haul, easy to breed, good food if necesary. alltho i'd rather starve for a week than kill one of my haulers.

chickens are ok too (tho IMO they eat way too much!) because the eggs (+veggies) can be used to make lavish meals if you don't have a source of meat. and they breed very nicely too. just keep the roosters separated from hens at one point if you don't want to have a 200eggsplosion kill your PC xDD
