I was thinking more along the lines of a wood stove, which would function like a fire, but would allow cooking fine and exquisite meals (after all people cook good food without electricity all the time).

Ideas / Re: Tech booming, realism, pacing.
July 30, 2015, 04:40:51 PM
I've sort of viewed "researching" more as "drafting" or "planning". Like the colonists already know the theory of how to build it, but they need to draw it up before they actually start construction. Kind of like this doctor at some rural hospital that had a baby that needed dialysis, but the hospital had no dialysis machines that could handle a small infant. The doctor knew the basic underlying theory of how dialysis machines work, so he drafted up a plan for a dialysis machine out of stuff he had in his garage, got a welder to help him construct it, and ended up producing a dialysis machine so good the hospital continues to use it to this day. If that doctor had been sitting at a bench trying to invent a machine that helps people with failing kidneys then it would have probably taken years, but since he was just drawing up plans for a machine that he already knew of it only took a few days, kind of like the time it takes to research things in Rimworld.

Ideas / Re: Suggestions request: Ways to fulfill a "joy" need
July 30, 2015, 01:49:09 AM
Here are some:
jump roping
hopscoth
shuffleboard
flying a kite
juggling
picking your nose
photography (perhaps with a procedural mechanic like the current sculpture descriptions)
blanket fort
diary: perhaps also with a similar mechanic as the sculpture descriptions
make shadow puppets
blowing bubbles
paper based:
origami
build paper airplanes
play with paper fortune teller/cootie catch
interactive:
massages (foot, shoulder, back)
play Frisbee/catch

Ideas / Re: More Priority Numbers
July 28, 2015, 08:28:46 PM
Is there any way to go backwards on priorities like holding shift while clicking? Right now I always just cycle through while clicking, and having a bunch of added priority numbers would make that inconvenient.
As it stands the current 2D priority system works really elegantly for my needs.

General Discussion / Re: Balancing talk: Floors
July 27, 2015, 02:47:04 PM
I get what you guys are saying about balance, but seriously a smoother stone floor is far more beautiful than carpet or stone tiles. Just look at this granite flooring.(yes it is technically a tile floor but that's just because it's unfeasible to make a huge floor out of one continuous piece of stone).
While we're on the subject polished concrete can also look rather nice.
My main issue is that I use wood everywhere. However, you would never use wood flooring in a hospital room, because it is impossible to sanitize. Also, I feel there should be a difference between the types of wood used in the flooring, and perhaps some beautiful and rare rosewood could be used to make a really attractive floor.

General Discussion / Re: Don't put traps in your colony entrance passage
July 27, 2015, 01:54:05 AM
Putting a floor beneath the traps improves the chance that raiders will walk over them and they will view that as the fastest route. I will commonly set up a few traps over concrete floor when some raiders arrive but before the start attacking, and dissemble the traps afterwards. I remember where I have previously laid the traps due to the flooring still being there, and don't put traps there because the enemies will not go back there.

Ideas / Giving/Recieving Gifts
July 26, 2015, 03:58:25 PM
It would be really cool if you could designate certain items as "gifts" and if visitors could leave gifts for you in your stockpile zones. What gifts visitors accept would depend on their faction/character/current outfit/etc, a tribe person might for example like normal-legendary quality tribal clothing and not care about things like button down shirts. Visitors could come equipped with random items and whether or not they leave it behind depends on 1) the value of the item, 2) your relations with their faction, 3) whether you have any gifts that the visitor likes. There could also be rare joy items that can only be gotten through gifts, incentivizing making positive relations with the locals.
This could give an interesting alternative to selling and would add more depth to the factor relationships.

Bugs / [Mac 0.11.857 rev1186] Stone doors and stone autodoors have same opening speed
July 23, 2015, 03:22:43 PM
I just started replacing my stone doors with autodoors, but they still looked to be opening slowly. To my surprise they both have an opening speed of 44%! D:
This is true for any type of stone: marble, slate, limestone, granite, and sandstone.

General Discussion / Re: Solar flare side-effect
July 22, 2015, 02:27:26 PM
Plenty of soil to survive, maybe not enough for wide-scale farming.
While we're on the subject of solar flare side-effects, is there any reason they don't affect mechanoids? Is that just because it can't be programmed to affect them also at the moment, or are they just immune because their bodies are faraday cages?

Hydroponics are handy for growing fast things faster, but I find greenhouses much safer in practice. Obviously that doesn't apply to ice sheets
Ice sheets still have plenty of soil on them, and with wood stockpiled you can keep your greenhouse warm during a solar flare.

Maybe it depends on the resolution you play at, but with my resolution on 250 x 250 maps I cannot zoom out all the way to see the entire map, and it takes about 2 seconds with the arrow keys to scroll from one side to the other. Sometimes it feels like I am playing chess but can only see 85% of the board at a time.
Holding shift makes the map scroll incredibly faster.
Thanks a lot, that really helps lol.

Bugs / Multiple use triple rocket launcher exploit
July 20, 2015, 08:34:44 PM
After your colonist has fired 1 or 2 rockets you can pause the game and tell them to drop the triple rocket launcher. You can then have them pick it back up, and fire the weapon again and repeat as many times as you like so long as you don't let them finish firing all 3 rockets.
