Don't take out beatings! If I want to RP an ebuul colony where a prison transport ship was the thing that was destroyed and all my colonists are cold-blooded killers, I should be allowed to do so :P

Moddability is extremely important, even if it's not so important in the short-term. There are games made ten years ago or more that are still being added onto by the modding community.

But in the short-term, yeah, biomes are the most important right away IMO.

If we're going with archaeology, would it be at all feasible for ruins to be made up of bases that real people have built and had destroyed? It would probably be hard, but once you lost the game could 'save' whatever manmade structures you have built and then upload them to a big database. Then when you load up a new game it would randomly pick a couple structures from the database and plop them down in suitable locations on your world. Spore did something similar, where every creature/building/vehicle you made would be uploaded to the 'Sporepedia' and then picked at random to inhabit the planets.

I'm not entirely sure how feasible this is as a cheap idea, but:

What about a special event where two huge groups of raiders land on opposite sides of your colony? They would both approach from either side, and that's where it would get interesting, because the groups would fight each other as well as you. You could hide your colonists in a building, watch them duke it out and then pick off the survivors, but at the risk of significant damage to your colony because there's practically a war going on inside of it.

Since I hate to start a new thread asking basically the same question:

I assume this computer will be fine to play RimWorld on? It's been able to play most games I've gotten pretty well, and RimWorld doesn't look like the most difficult game to run, but you can never be too careful:

What about batteries that you can set exclusive to one thing? So you could have backup power for, say, specifically only the lights and doors that was separate from the main supply.

Ideas / New Raider Weapons
October 24, 2013, 07:42:28 PM
I'm sure a good few of these have already been suggested before, but I think that giving raiders a more varied supply of equipment would make individual battles more fun and interesting. Some ideas are below:

Nets - Close range, somewhat common, secondary weapon (Raiders can hold a gun as well). Raiders can throw a net onto a colonist if they get close enough (A bit out of hand-to-hand range) and, if nobody is presently shooting at them, will attempt to drag the colonist off. While under a net, a colonist will be unable to move until they get it off (Not sure how long it should take). Other colonists can be ordered to help them, halving the time until the net is removed.
(If colonists can pick these up from dead raiders who had them, it might allow a better way of capturing raiders in the late-game when weapons do a lot of damage. Could also be substituted for a stun gun with similar properties.)

Drills - Very close range, somewhat rare, primary weapon (Raiders cannot hold a gun as well, but can hold secondary weapons like nets and grenades). Raiders can use these to quickly break through walls or mine into structures.

Riot Shield - Medium rarity. A gun can be used, but taking one out un-equips the shield. Provides constant cover in the direction the user is facing until destroyed. Raiders using these would probably have a shotgun as well, so they could run up without taking as much damage and get in some close-range shots. Could also be useful for moving from cover to cover.

Mines - Rare, secondary weapon. Less of a direct combat move and more as a danger for after the battle is over, raiders can place down mines on the battlefield. They would work similarly to blasting charges, able to destroy walls and rock and such, but would also be activated when walked over; this means that colonists would have to be extra careful moving around the area for a while after a battle. Mines could be given away by a red blink every few seconds, but there would be a danger of an incapacitating or deadly explosion if a colonist without a high science skill went to disarm it.

Medkit - Rare, secondary weapon. Raiders using medkits would hang back, potentially with long-range weapons. If a raider was critically wounded they would attempt to get to the injured person and use the medkit on them, restoring some health after a few seconds of potential danger. Medkit raiders would no doubt be important targets to take out first, making long-range weapons even more critical.

In addition, I think that grenades and molotov cocktails should be made 'secondary' weapons, allowing a colonist or raider to use a gun as well. They should probably have limited amounts, too, if they don't already.

Ideas / Re: Different gun ranges and mud-areas.

For the mud idea, I think we're getting barbed wire anyways, so assuming the raiders can't just shoot the wire apart and they don't count as cover, you could probably make a good 'kill-zone' with several lines of barbed wire.

It would be cool to have a bunch of smaller colonies on a map connected by roads with vehicles traveling between them. I definitely like the idea.

I'm sure it's been suggested plenty of times, but what about basic robots that could (inefficiently) take care of some menial tasks? You'd have a mining robot, a farming robot, etc.

I believe it resets when I update the file. If it doesn't I'll get them to do it. Wouldn't make much sense otherwise; that link will be updated every month or so with new versions.

All right, thanks for the info.

So, I bought the game just a minute ago off the site, rather than the Kickstarter, so that I could use PayPal. Everything worked out, I got the email, but the link says 'You can visit this link this five more times' or something to that effect.

Now, while I'm sure it's no big deal, this has got me feeling quite anxious; does this mean that if I were to, say, click on the link to the placeholder download a couple times by accident, I would be unable to download the game once it came out?

Just looking for answers and maybe clarification on this five-visit limit. Apologies if this is in the wrong spot.

General Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hello, everyone! DeltaV here.

I've actually yet to back the game (Don't kill me yet, going to preorder RimWorld off the website later today), but it looks quite fun. I found the game on Quill18's channel, actually, and it seemed like fate because I was looking for a good Dwarf-Fortress style game and this one seems to fit me perfectly.

My favorite other game would probably be Civilization V, Don't Starve or Kerbal Space Program. I've been a huge fan of alpha-and-beta indie-style games ever since I bought Minecraft for like $15 years ago and got hundreds of hours out of it.

My most embarrassing story? Hmm, that's a tough one. Once in Kerbal Space Program I couldn't figure out how to fire astronauts so I put the ones I didn't want into a giant death rocket one by one and launched them to their deaths. In the Sims 3 once, my Sim's rug, laptop and oven all caught on fire at once, each from completely unrelated circumstances (The rug was too close to the fireplace, the oven was cooking food I'd forgotten about, and my sim had just unsuccessfully tried to upgrade his laptop), destroying half the house before anyone could put it out.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the best breakfast cereal.
