Kinda... just dont launch it through the steam overlay and it wont try to update.

Really? That works?! Thanks :D Auto updates can be a total pain! It shouldn't be so hard though, but now that it is, it's great to know one can get around it :) Another thing I think GOG does better :P

For backing stuff up, I have a 1TB portable hard drive. I think you should be able to get something like that quite cheaply now.

You can attach it to your home network or directly via USB.

Also, SendOwl (RimWorld's DRM-free download provider) is a relatively painless way of getting the latest stable version of RimWorld. If you need the previous versions of RimWorld then obviously you'd have to back those up, so see above.

I do back up things on my USB HDs, my point wasn't how it can't be done, but I must've been unclear on that, I'm sorry. My point was that having to keep backups of games is a pain when it is so easy to add it to an online platform. Since I really don't like DRM and don't want to support Steam (which is more like indefinitely renting the games than buying them), I just argue why GOG is a good choice. Clearly there are many with me who would like that too, as clearly as it is Tynan's choice whether we get that or not.

That 'one place' could be your hard-drive.

I, for instance, frequently format my computer. That means my hard drive is not a very good option unless I want even more folders to remember to back up when I format. Having an online library is great for so many reasons I doubt I have to tell them to you and Steam has some sides to it that some users just don't like, sides that GOG Galaxy doesn't have. It's great that you have no problem here, but I fail to see why that should be a reason why those who want it on GOG shouldn't get it. Tynan probably has his reasons, but you not needing it certainly isn't a very strong reason.

I, too, hope that Tynan would reconsider... Like the previous reply, I've decided to stop bying games on Steam and use GOG instead. If there are strong arguments against it, I would love to hear them (and try to stop hoping for a GOG release ;) ) But of course, that's all up to whether Tynan wants to, or can, disclose them.

Buying it from rimworldgame.com gets you a DRM-free copy, updated forever, just like GoG.

Very true. Although, if I want to collect all the downloads for my games in one library for easy download since I'm frequently formatting my computer, I'm left with no choice but Steam. That option is not very interesting if I'm interested in DRM-free, nor if I'm interested in a platform that gives me the opportunity to download installers for all the games should they shut down. While unlikely, at least at present, that Steam will shut down, I'm uneasy just renting the games when I could buy it on GOG and actually own it.

Just my 2 cents trying to provide an argument that would make you see a use of releasing on GOG. Having that said, I have no idea how much work it would be for you to release your game on yet another platform and I do realise it might make it unviable at the present. Here's hoping though ;) And thank you for an amazing game!

This is a question that i too am interested in.
GOG has the GOG galaxy-client (hopefully coming soon to GNU/Linux) - a game database with social features and achievements (like a small version of steam).
What is the sense of that ?
If GOG throw out a client that act like steam, you can use steam too. I am happy GOG didn't need any client for the games yet that track you.
Did you know 37% of all bought games on steam didn't even get played or downloaded ?

I give you my reasons:
1. GOG is a client like Steam, yes, but there ends the similarities. GOG is still DRM-free since the client is just for making it easier for the customers desiring it.
2. GOG will never force you to use their client (as per their promise at least), which means I actually do own the games bought there. If they were to close down, given they warn us, I could just download installers for all my games and not lose them. Were Steam to shut down, I have no security at all that I'll get to keep the games, thus it feels more like indefinitely renting the games from Steam than bying them.
3. GOG client lets me choose exactly what types of features I want - whether I want tracking or not for instance. This is also something I can't use Steam for.
4. Not using either is definitely a possibility, but I much prefer having a library of all my games so that I download them all from one place rather than having to keep track of all different download sites since I frequently format my computer and thus need to reinstall my games.

I hope that explains to you how some people have use for GOG even though they prefer not to use Steam :)

It's also not complete yet, so I don't think GOG would be interested until then.  (Remember what the O in GOG stands for.)

Actually, GOG has recently begun with "In development", which is just like Steam's "Early Access" (but better, in my humble opinion), so that the game is not finished isn't a problem. Neither are they only doing old games anymore, as crazybmanp replied :)

I, too, am waiting for it to come to GOG before I buy it. Does anyone know if there's been an official statement as to whether it will, or never will, come to GOG? Nice to know if I'm wating in vain :)

Thank you for replying so quickly although it's an old thread. Was looking for the Fire Extinguisher and did search your other post but failed to find it. Am I just crap at finding stuff or doesn't it exist?

Any chance this will be updated to Alpha 14? :)
