They're all dead now....  The two in the hospital beds (unable to move and get food) died of starvation.  Then the stupid martial artist that couldn't feed nor treat them due to her belief that the wounded shouldn't be cared for had a mental break, went berserk, and then died of blood-loss due to all the bites, scratches, and tusk goring she got from killing animals in her berserk rage....  And, right before she died raiders attacked and destroyed all my stuff.  lol
Been there, done that :-D

I hope this doesn't get drowned out by the new spamming @sshole.  I'm looking for some general advice about how to survive long enough to get good stuff going (with the Cassandra AI and basebuilder level, ouch!).  I've done a fairly decent job of staffing my colonists, getting better at optimizing work and keeping them happy, and they only rarely starve!  Also, whenever I get traders, I buy all the medicine they have.

However what I experience is that the biggest problem I have is "mad" animals and hunted animals going for revenge injuring my colonists.  Of course, this is unavoidable (gotta eat meat!).  Throw in raiders also injuring my colonists and - even when I successfully fight them off - I have real shortfalls of medicine.  This is exacerbated by the fact that I only rarely get traders lately.  As I can see, this result is entirely out of my control; even when I do everything right, my colony is dying off (only doctor is critically injured? sucks to be me!) after a few hours of play.  I have enough time to make them a house that makes them happy and to stockpile sufficient food / resources stores.  I also have enough time to research 1 or 2 items, but that's all.

What am I missing?  Advice please!

Thanks!

Click the storage tab and scroll, man. You can control what goes in, the quality, and the current durability

Thanks, got it!

Quote from: ahowe42 on August 14, 2016, 06:31:24 AMThanks for the advice.  A few questions:

  • I have not seen anywhere to set properties on storage areas, other than size.  How do I do this?
Smelter?  Furnace?  I do not have these as options.

Andrew

Click on the stockpile once you've made it, you can set what should go in the stockpile, set quality/damage percentage restrictions and whether something should go into this stockpile before another(at which point stuff will also be hauled from the lower priority stockpile to the higher priority one).

The smelter and the furnace he is talking about are probably a bit ahead of where you are, they need to be unlocked via research. Fortunately if you really want something gone like weapons or clothing, putting it in an area with no roof will slowly destroy the object until it vanishes(requires the item to have a deterioration rate though, you can check whether it has or not by clicking the little i next to the items name). Or you can make your own improvised furnace by making a small roofed area with stone pillars and flooring(make sure nothing else flammable is nearby or you might start a wildfire, also you might want to de-home zone the area where you plan to put your trash) then loading your unwanted trash in the area via a stockpile. Then simply chuck a few molotovs into the trash pile and watch it burn.

Thank you very much - this is useful.  I figured out just by playing on the quality & types of items how to do what I wanted.  I just put a "garbage dump" stockpile further from my home for the crap I don't need.

On a related note, I can only get molotovs if I last long enough to loot them from raiders I kill.  This is after hours and hours of play.  My biggest bane is mad animals or "revenge" animals.  As you know, these are unavoidable.  How is it that people are playing long enough to research things like molotovs, etc...?

Shelves, shelves, hmm i don't see any shelves at the vanila game. Do you mean Equipment racks ?
Why do you think they are called equipment and not food racks ?

If you want something to store your meal, special fridge's ? Then you should take a look at the mod section.

Ok, fair enough.  The question still stands - how can I control what goes on the "equipment racks"?

Appearels you can burn at the furnace and weapons you can smelt at the electric smelter.
You can setup an dump/storage area outside, low priority for all the damaged or low quality items you don't want in the colony.
You can setup what quality that get stored at the sliders on top of the stockpile seting.

And inside your colony a storage area with you only store the good things.

Thanks for the advice.  A few questions:

Why do you think they are called solar panels and not cave panels ? :-)
Just place them outside like before and build a wall around them, set these area to noroof.
Best would be to combine 1 wind turbine with 1 panel before and 2 panels behind the turbine. The panels prevent trees to spawn and don't block the wind for the turbine.
On long term you should build some floors there too.
Don't forget to build an alternate powerline in case raider/event destroy one.

Why should I waste my limited steel resources to build walls when I can just use natural stone cave walls :-D?

General Discussion / solar not working?
August 14, 2016, 04:50:59 AM
The other day, I installed my solar panels in a dug-out section of rock (like where I typically dig out for the colonists to live).  They never produced any power at all, which I'm guessing is because there was a roof that I could not see.  Is there any control over roofing?

As a bit of an explanation - in a previous scenario with my solar panels outside, raider came and destroyed them with frag grenades. Hence, I wanted to put them "inside" (but obviously not covered!).

Thanks!

General Discussion / don't put crap on my shelves
August 14, 2016, 04:46:52 AM
As I understand it, the purpose of the storage shelves is that whatever colonists put on them won't go bad.  However, when I've installed shelving, they put stupid crap there like some junky weapons.  They did not put prepared food or butchered meat.  Since the colonists are stupid about what they're storing on the shelves, how can I force them to put perishables on the shelves?

Thanks!

General Discussion / How to trash things?
August 14, 2016, 04:43:57 AM
Frequently, when my settlement is raided, and I kill the invaders, their weapons are not worth looting.  Hence, I don't really want to tell someone to pick them up and put them in my storage area.  But then, these trash items just sit around, because I can't find anyway to tell someone to pick them up and haul them to the dump.  Of course, this then makes the environment "ugly" and the colonists unhappy.

How can I fix this?
